    @pedant, quite, I was thinking of Susan’s parents. Something his (at the time) children said to him? Something Susan said to him?

    It’s also made me think, she’s mentioned lots of grandmothers, there was that woman in an RTD episode that was apparently confirmed as his mother. No mention of father figures other than the Doctor travelling with his…[Read more]

    Apologies if this is a double post, but my attempted edit seems to have deleted the post…

    @kevinwho @pedant

    I’ve got to admit, wiping UNIT away, some of the most-longstanding “cruft” in Doctor Who, was something that caused me a certain amount of disappointment. It can obviously be reinstated as necessary though, so that’s not a decisio…[Read more]

    @Pedant – I believe you did, but you’re allowed to repeat. Dammit tho, I was hoping you could help with my alt universe mind wipe! 😉

  • ScaryB replied to the topic Resolution

    Thanks for the clarification on the length a  Rel, @countscarlioni, although I also think @pedant has a point that it’s as long/short as it needs to be for dramatic tension, haha. (And thanks also to Pedant for the extension to my vocabularly – so a cruft is a bit of a shaggy dog then…? )

    @Miapatrick – I agree that the dads being…[Read more]

    @pedant   @scaryb “Can anyone remember how long a rel is?”

    I believe a rel is 1.2 seconds, or at least that’s what it was in Evolution of the Daleks (if my memory is right).

  • Mudlark replied to the topic Resolution

    @pedant

    A lone Dalek. Always more interesting than an army of them.

    Very true. Just as Eccleston Doctor’s encounter with the lone, semi dormant Dalek and his reaction to it conveyed the menace of the species far better than later massed battalions, this resurrected specimen had real impact and allowed Whittaker to display her full range as the…[Read more]

    Well I liked that! As @Pedant says – lone daleks are scary. Especially when they’re on a mission. Not perfect, but loads to like. And yay for the return of skeleton exposing extermination effect.

    Loved the steampunk dalek, and the parallel with the Doctor constructing her new sonic from bits of Sheffield steel in ep 1. And was the Doctor really…[Read more]

    Happy New Year everyone

    @thane16 – Yes, Puro, the auto subtitles can get things hilariously wrong. Which brings me to this…

    @pedant – According to the subtitles on your video “I had my mates cut in half”. I’m sure we’ve all told our friends to piss off when they’re being annoying but having them dismembered might be a tad drastic 😆

  • thane16 replied to the topic The Kebab & Calculator

    @pedant awesomely interesting. For some reason I always listen and watch these things the 2nd time around for the automatic subtitling.  🙂

    Somewhere a “japan” and a “carol” featured as did “Cervantes and decibel” -the last was supposed to be DESMOND.

    I find the “fervour” attached to these very industrious groups sometimes as exhausting as the…[Read more]

    @pedant When I played it the second time, I almost became less excited but more interested by what he’s doing with this. The second time I deliberately tried to make different choices, didn’t find many different scenes. There seems to be several optional endings and only one absolute, though I’ve been told there are five ‘real’ endings.

    @bluesqueakpip brilliant idea. For me, some distance from the show can cause me to realise that the reasons could be because of other things affecting programming

    @kevinwho  I just did this looong philosophy thing on logic, rationality and god: can you use rational thinking to prove the existence of God.

    @pedant Agreed, it’s my favourite from the various Christmas episodes. This one’s my 2nd favourite taken from A Christmas Carol

    It was used in a Christmas advert a few years ago but I can’t remember the company or product they were trying to push. Ah, the power of advertising 🙂

  • @thane16, @winston, @craig, @pedant, @cathannabel, @jimthefish, @janetteb, and @everyone

    Ok, The Christmas TV setting is being arranged, and yes, there is “A Christmas Carol” and “It’s a Wonderful Life”, and, as indicated earlier, “Die Hard”.

    But the truth is that the the main events are the two all-time Christmas favourites in the Blenkinsop…[Read more]

    The regular Xmas films Chez Fish go something like this:

    A Christmas Carol (various versions on rotation but more often than not the Muppets win out)
    In The Bleak Midwinter (of A Midwinter’s Tale if you’re American. Much overlooked and a great little film)
    Home Alone
    Trading Places
    Gremlins

    And of course, as @pedant says…[Read more]

    I’ve just spent a chunk of time catching up on a couple of weeks of sofa chat that I’m really sorry to have missed. Especially the garden talk. Yes, context indeed helps. Prior, Donna is the one ‘made’ to type all while looking at Josh as if he’s gone crazy.

    The next day Josh explodes with you wouldn’t believe this but they answered and Donna says “oh no, REALLY?” Josh replies along the lines of “You have to answer, right away. Sit down, type this” etc.

    And yes, she wanders…[Read more]
