Hmm, speaking of that prequel. I haven’t taken it into account with any of my theories. That’s a mistake, I think. It was full of significant imagery and themes that have been repeated throughout the series.

13 May 2013 at 13:11 #8898Re: series 8 I just saw this from Blogtor Who, “Moffat confirms Series 8. Current showrunner Steven Moffat talked to Digital Spy last night at the BAFTAs and revealed that the next series of Doctor Who is already being written, he said:
“… series eight is absolutely, definitely confirmed. It is real and it’s happening – it’s [taking up] most of my time at the moment.”
Jenna-Louise Coleman has confirmed she also be taking part in the next series though Matt Smith’s involvement still remains a mystery. The pair have already filmed the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special and start shooting on the 2013 Christmas Special in “August or September”.

They put so much effort into keeping those last 3 minutes secret in order for the surprise to unfold for everyone more or less together. Now that has been spoiled. I’m sure those seeing it early are just as appreciative of the hard work, but having done my time on the other side of the lights…I know how disappointing it is for creatives when their clever gifts are opened early. I’m staying away from twitter and my facebook ‘entertainment’ feeds this week.

12 May 2013 at 16:31 #8743Just completed my re-watch and I still enjoyed the heck out of that story. A few things that lept out:
Again with the mirroring! The Emperor feeling the weight of killing billions to eradicate a deadly enemy. Clara is being shown so many glimpses into the Doctor’s heart, and inner workings. She understands now, after her experience in Hide, that the Doctor doesn’t reveal his feelings, perhaps doesn’t even allow himself to feel them – keeps them behind a wall. She says this plainly during her conversation with the Cyber Planner. I think all these encounters with characters who mirror the Doctor are offering Clara an insight that will come in handy, very soon.
My impression of the Doctor allowing the Cyberiad into his head was so he could study them, not the other way round. I was never truly worried…only a little.
As for the kids….well, that pre-adolescent girl child was fairly true to form, in so many ways! I have experienced a 13-year old who, upon finding herself in Italy for her birthday, moaned and complained as she rode horses through poppy fields in Tuscany. I laughed each time Angie opened her mouth to belly-ache – especially after being ‘snatched’ by the cyberman!
The foreshadowing going on between the Doctor and Clara increasingly feels like a man falling in love with a woman. The flirtatiousness was apparent in the first three episodes featuring Clara: AoTD, TS, and TBoSJ. The tone shifted a bit in the next two, but the foreshadowing picked up again in Hide and hasn’t stopped since. Just look at the expression on the Doctor’s face when the Emporer proposes to Clara.
I’m intrigued by this continued focus on ‘webs’ – first the Daleks and now the Cyberiad.
Each of the episodes in 7.2 have captured my imagination and suspended my disbelief. Having only properly been introduced to Doctor Who over the Christmas, and promptly engaging in a “catch-up-a-thon”, I am having a ball! I hasten to add that my enjoyment of this show, and its long and illustrious history, has been increased by the enthusiasm of the fans on this forum. I’m so glad I found you all!

However, this doesn’t fit, does it. Clara’s friend was her own age, and Clara is certainly not old enough to have children the ages of Artie and Angie. It would make sense for Clara to mean ‘friend’ in the sense of ‘family friend’ but why confuse the issue with the coda? hmm

Perhaps the show is making a statement regarding the perpetual mid-east wars and their impact. Or perhaps the societal forces shaping the alienated and self-possessed thinking of Europe and America are simply revealed in the writing. After all, the writers are part of the sociological dynamic we all feel and experience. Culture is self-absorbed. The cult of personality is thick in the streets, and on the air waves.
Or perhaps the companions reflect the dominant culture of their era. The 60’s and 70’s counter culture was a reaction against a rigid and dogmatic society. Can that be seen in the companions of the time? Our own age is awash with excess, with a focus on technology that turns us ever inward. Are nu-Who companions reflective of this, or any other social commentary? I don’t know, but I doubt it.
It could be argued that the myth of the “exceptional human” is wrapped up in the cult of personality, and societies current thirst for fame and self-importance. Whichever it is, I would prefer to see the Doctor’s unique worldview and moral code explicitly expressed. It would delight me to see a human perspective contrasted with that of an alien species, and both respected. It’s such a great narrative for exploring cultural and ideological diversity. In fact, I thought they did that pretty well with the Ice Warrior in Cold War.
8 May 2013 at 19:09 #8244@Shazzbot and @haveyoufedthefish – I would like to know the reasoning behind that shift. Has the formula for episodics changed? Have any of the show’s writers or producers discussed it? Maybe taking a different perspective, it seems to me they are presenting a very human centric view of the cosmos. By portraying the Doctor’s ethical choices as wanting, they establish that human morality is superior. I don’t want that type of human centric cosmos. I am very happy for the Doctor to possess and express a vastly different ethical code than humanity, in fact it would make for great juxtaposition with the companion.

JLC has hinted that Clara has met the Doctor more than three times. It could be that in one of those instances he told her about the YCB command. ?

I just re-watched Cold War with my house mate, and two things took on new significance. First, Clara’s singing: in JttCotT, Clara said she was more afraid of the Doctor than anything on the ship. At the end of Cold War, when the only remaining danger was the Doctor blowing them up…she began signing. She was afraid of the Doctor there. Secondly, Clara’s strange underwater scene: we learned in JttCotT that the Doctor is repeating events until the ‘right’ resolution is achieved. Clara’s underwater / coming-to in the eerie blue light could certainly be an alternate ending to what had originally been her drowning, and the ship going under.

It seems certain that whatever the mystery is, it has something to do with children. I just re-watched TWoRS (having completed a deadline last week which leaves me free to obsess properly), and was struck by the child singing the little rhyme, “tick tock goes the clock.” No idea what strangeness SM has cooked up in his imagination, but I look forward to finding out!
Oh! One last thing regarding RS. In the final scene with Amy, River reminds Amy that she didn’t really kill Madame Kovarian, because it was an aborted time line that never happened. It was in that same aborted time line that River and the Doctor married one another. Using her own logic, she knows she and the Doctor aren’t ‘really’ married. As nice as it would be for the Doctor to have a wife and family, I agree with @bluesqueakpip (who I believe mentioned earlier) that doing so would reduce the Doctor’s motivation for being involved with humans in the first place, and the empathy we, as an audience, have for his character. Resolving the ‘RS is married to the Doctor’ idea would move the show forward in that area, I think. Which…is a real bummer, because I adore River!
7 May 2013 at 10:14 #8103@haveyoufedthefish and @Shazzbot – I think the video was a US / iTunes thing, so didnt get wide distribution. It appears to be full of information about series 7: a hooded monk, children, places the Doctor doesn’t want to remember. I noticed the openning sequence has a completely blue time vortex, save for the small red “destination” at the end of the tunnel. Contrast that with the completely red time vortex we see now, and there is significant indication that something is being brought into the present.
I am completely intrigued by the room with the children’s voices, and the Doctor’s reaction to being taken there. He was called to save someone’s daughter, but was not willing to help until compelled. This is contrasted with Clara’s reaction in RoA. When children are involved,Clara immediately jumps in to help (a scene fresh on my mind after re-watching last night).

In fact, Alex plants that seed herself in the Confidential interview re: TWoRS ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cFjb9oNFPM&feature=share&list=PLF40786DC5E8903E8 ), and I wouldn’t put it past SM, either.
I got on this kick because I was watching the DW Confidential where they discuss the cot–what a great scene that was–which naturally led to my re-watching ALL the RS confidentials. I also re-watched the prequel to AotD and found it VERY interesting that the Doctor was ‘caught’ in a dream scape, unable to wake. This rekindled my original theory that it’s all a dream–that all the new eps are dreams.

When pretending to be Mr & Mrs Smith, the Doctor calls her his “Mrs” and she looks up at him oddly. Then again, as @Shazzbot noted, I believe, when clarifying to Ada that she is the Doctor’s friend. When the kids refer to him as her “boyfriend”, she does it again.
The intimacy between them was also apparent when the Doctor revived her; their faces were positively glowing.

The Doctor was ‘doctoring’ back on Galliefry, specifically with TimeLord biological (or genetic) capabilities–perhaps even the way they reginerate or travel through time–and ‘made’ a new type of Time Lord. Fearing his creation would fall into the ‘wrong hands’, he fled, taking his creation–his ‘granddaughter’–with him.

Mr Sweets didn’t seem to care, he just provided the deadly juice to wipe the supstandard specimens off the planet. Perhaps the GI was involved in CH, after all.
4 May 2013 at 19:36 #7753@bluesqueakpip – I have a feeling the GI is behind more than we know. With the recent Omega conversations fresh on my mind, I am more curious than ever to discover just who and what the GI is.
I also found myself being more than a little suspicious of the kids. Are they real? How did they find those pics? Did the girl tell Clara the RYCBAR code? If so, how did she know it? The mystery of the story arc is affecting my perception of the show; I am progressively distrustful of what is presented in “plain sight.”

You know, I wouldn’t be the least surprised if River Song has known all along who Clara is, and that she was right around the corner. Spoilers. It also seems the Doctor has a better idea about Clara’s identity. That last little smile, and twinkle of the eye, when responding to Jenny’s query indicated someone who has been carefully putting puzzle pieces together.
As someone above mentioned (and I hesitate to say much about here, because some do not watch the Preview), the “equipment” the Doctor seems to be wearing in next week’s ep is troubling.
Oh! Before I forget…. Diana Rigg!! Attack of the Super Models!! Thomas Thomas!! Jenny!! Strax!! Fainting!! by a man!!!!

I would say…this episode solidifies it for me. Clara and the Doctor are more than platonic, and definitely a different type of familial than birth family!
