    Thanks for the clarification on the length a  Rel, @countscarlioni, although I also think @pedant has a point that it’s as long/short as it needs to be for dramatic tension, haha. (And thanks also to Pedant for the extension to my vocabularly – so a cruft is a bit of a shaggy dog then…? )

    @Miapatrick – I agree that the dads being…[Read more]

    @thane16  Thanks for those comments, particularly your observations on persistent sexist attitudes at your school; too true in too many places, and changing very slowly, so yes, it really *was* important for Moffat to strike those notes, IMO.

    @countscarlioni  You’re welcome of course.  I’m grateful that we’ve come (however sadly) to a place in ou…[Read more]

    Locke is obviously well before any understanding (nascent though it still is) of the brain and was, I imagine, a cartesian dualist, so in his view, memory presumably resided with the soul, so a reconstituted body containing that soul would contain the same self.

    I’d argue that in the modern understanding, and disregarding…[Read more]

    @countscarlioni and @bluesqueakpip Thank you for those detailed explanations! I was never sure how that was handled at the time, if William Hartnell was indeed in his Doctor’s regeneration scene. It’s also quite cool to learn some of the details behind the filming/editing of that, and how it managed to be archived when other early Doctor Who[Read more]

    Yes, the regeneration scene (and a couple of other brief scenes) survive. The regeneration scene survives because the children’s programme Blue Peter did a piece on Doctor Who – and included that clip from Tenth Planet. When it came to the Great BBC Wiping of Tapes, Blue Peter’s formidable editor, Biddy Baxter, was having none of it. Blue…[Read more]

    Ah,

    *sniff*

    I really enjoyed that. Made me laugh, and cry. And very much on a favourite Moffatt theme of keeping people alive through memories  – from Amy with Rory, and now gifting Twelve with his restored memories of Clara. At the end of the day, that’s all we’ve got. I agree with @Juniperfish, I was hoping for a cameo from River, but we’ve…[Read more]

    @janetteb;

    I’ve tasted those biscuits you speak of, and they don’t tast like Jammy Dodgers at all.

    Still at least I know where I can get them.

    @countscarlioni.

    Well spotted, I add my congratulations Clara.

    @countscarlioni  Perhaps the line has become a kind of psychic trigger to help him remember all the important things after he changes, like where he put his guitar.  lol  It is interesting though since his “I don’t want to go” was also a repeat of an earlier version’s desire.  Perhaps we’ve misinterpreted him and he’s just suffering from a con…[Read more]

    But somehow Sontarans don’t feel epic enough to warrant the attention of two Doctors.

    2 drs

    I’m being cheeky – I get what you mean though. Current comedic Sontarans aren’t epic enough.

    But there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be revamped as more serious kick-ass soldiers at some point in the future. They deserve it.

    @tardigrade and @countscarlioni

    I’ve got a vague recollection that there was a paper presented a couple of years back which considered the possibility of thermodynamic time reversal in black holes. In the popular press it got translated into ‘time going into reverse’, which might well have caught the eye of one S. Moffat.

    What would happen in…[Read more]

    @countscarlioni Thank you for that video! I think I will have to play it in slow-motion. My poor little mind still doesn’t quite get it. But I’m glad it helped my husband, and I do think it looks like an amazing movie.

    @thane15 Puro, I’m with you once again. It’s like I almost get it … then realize I don’t. Shades of algebra coming back to haunt me.

  • wolfweed replied to the topic World Enough and Time

    @CountScarlioni  In theory, if two Missy’s touch, it could cause Paradoxical Time Distortion (or Blinovitch Limitation Effect).

    Perhaps it’s what’s causing the Floor Zero phenomenon…

    @countscarlioni Thanks for finding the transcript of Survival.

    That kinda sums it up, but I was actually thinking of an earlier conversation between The Doctor and The Master, very near the end, where The Master asks for help. I had fun reading this as if it was between Capaldi Doc and Missy. It’s almost flirtatious.

    @blenkinsopthebrave  @countscarlioni  The key point I thought came from Bill when she realised that everybody must seem like a child to the Doctor. Well, not everybody, and so no wonder he’s yearning for more `grown-up’ conversations with Missy.

    Good point — “Grow the Hell up!” was a surprise.  It’s another sign of “wearing thin” — I wonder…[Read more]
