The Doctor dances, with not a hint of the Drunken Giraffe, he even sings, and – pace @Kharis  – this is the Doctor now, enjoying life, freed by the bi-generation from the last traces of PTSD and angst and ‘absolutely’ himself, as he said in his first moments.  So I agree entirely with the seemingly almost universal opinion that Gatwa owns the ch…[Read more]

Someone suggested that we are seeing a deliberate de-emphasis of character-drawing. I don’t agree. I’m not concerned about the slower flowering of the Companion characters. We have a whole series in which to do that, and all that matters to start out is that they all seem likeable and competent, and have some good potential ba…[Read more]

Oh, like @kharis, I do like @bluesqueakpip‘s theories here.  I’d be surprised and disappointed if Ryan’s dad was that tired old stereotype of the Afro-Caribbean dead-beat absent father, so this opens up some much more interesting possibilities.  Ryan may well think that’s what his dad is but it would be great to have him proved wrong.

@pedant, quoting @Kharis  Every show a self-contained story” sounds to me like a return to 100% “monster of the week” and no need to bother staying for the end, because there’s no chance of failure, and everyone ends up exactly as they started so the next “self-contained story” can toddle on without any continuity with what came before.[Read more]

I liked Segun Akinola’s music, so there you are. And, much as I loved Murray Gold’s music (I own the CDs), by the end of Peter Capaldi’s run I really was feeling as if he’d said what he had to say for Doctor Who.

I’m with @Thane16 and @Pedant – it’s going to take more than one episode for the new composer to find his…[Read more]

Thank you for the explanation @kharis.  I suspected as much but wasn’t really all that certain.

Not sure what is my favorite part of the episode….I liked how the Doctor shouted at the hunter to stand still and then bolted in pursuit when it fled.   Got a kick out of that wouldn’t be the first instinct reaction for us mortals.

    Early o…[Read more]

    @kharis @missy @tempusFugit  I’m a Leo. And telling it like it is.  😀

I was a professional musician. So, speaking as an orchestral conductor the music was quite difficult to write; it’s new; it’s not Murray Gold but it IS a composer with a pretty legitimate background. I think that were he, or his family, reading comments that it’s “extremely b…[Read more]

What a generous thing to say.

Not very true of me, although I do say what I think – regardless. However, this doesn’t mean that I am always right.

I was only joking about we Leo’s. We can  be a great pain in the rear!

I understand the teeth, though. Check my post on page 1.

As for the music, ooh, that’s harsh! I actually thought it had some lovely orchestral moments? It wasn’t Murray, that’s for sure, but I do think it was in the upper portion of successful for something so obviously new. Again, that’s just my personal opinion….

  • @kharis  @tempusfugit  Well, this weekend is IT, and my feelings are — mixed.  Every time Chibnall opens his mouth about the new season, my heart sinks a little more.  “Every show a self-contained story” sounds to me like a return to 100% “monster of the week” and no need to bother staying for the end, because there’s no chance of failure, and…[Read more]

I have an aversion to referring to anyone as as ‘coloured or nigger.’ I remember an English actor getting into trouble for saying ‘coloured’ not long ago. The person in question preferred to be referred to as ‘black.’

I also become angry when people  say, ‘Frogs, Ities, Yanks, Wops, Chinks,’ etcetera. Are they too lazy to say the…[Read more]

  • @kharis  Had been hoping the trailer would get me excited, but all it did was make me miss my favorite doctors.

On the other hand, you also got ice cream and wine . . .

Well, it’s just the wait now.

Thing that frustrates me is what @mudlark says above, and the inevitability of it.  When DW was a low budget, quirky show for family viewing that h…[Read more]

  • @kharis Oh, I’m still sad about Peter leaving as well, I’ve been re-watching his and Matt’s episode as well but this trailer made me so happy. This has been the easiest time between two doctors I’ve had to go through, and I only needed to wait a day to see Matt’s first episode. Jodie is already The Doctor to me, she was the moment I saw her. I…[Read more]

  • @ichabod  I can understand you’re doubts about Kris Marshall, but I’ve seen him in a few things and he is definitely not light weight. In fact, he can come over as quite ruthless, as well as funny and compassionate. Still, that’s my opinion.

Absolutely: Loved PC in this role; loved all the stories -even The Moon As an Egg which, despite the general hilarity, I found rather endearing. And it had Hermoine….? wonderful actress who isn’t seen often enough (on telly at least).
