@missy and @cathannabel  I am so sorry for you both and your families. Cancer sucks and it is terrible that you have to go through this with people you love. Please stop in now and then because I know that sometimes distraction is a blessing if only for a little while. Also know that we are thinking of you even if we don’t see you.

  • @Missy did not know that you also liked B.5.  It is one of my favourites. We are going to do a podcast about it next year. I will let you know when.

@winston I am slowing reading through the Discworld series though I fear I won’t get to re watch Hogfather as I  am running out of time to complete my Christmas viewing this year. I always leave it t…[Read more]

@cathannabel So sorry to hear about your brother. I hope you are able to be with him for the last few weeks. Such time is precious.

@missy. Sorry too to hear about your husband. I knew he was ill and was concerned for you.

This forum is a good place and long may it remain so. I dread the influx of trolls whenever there is a new season but they…[Read more]

Thank you @missy,@thane16, @whisht, @pedant, @blenkinsopthebrave, @miapatrick. And to Missy, yes, one compartmentalises as best one can and does what one must and you have my deepest sympathy. One clings on to good things, and this place is a Good Thing and I will come here whenever I can even if I can’t muster bonkers theories about Who, because…[Read more]

I didn’t realise your husband’s condition was terminal. I’m so sorry to hear this. Do the doctors think he’ll be with you and your daughter at Christmas?

the life of sorrows, isn’t it?

  • Miapatrick replied to the topic The Kebab & Calculator

@missy his ‘shut up – shuttedy shuttedy up’ moment in his last season (I think) was a clear tribute to his Malcolm.  The man has fantastic timing and verbal dexterity, so I suppose the lesson is, if you’re going to do something, do it well.

@Winston @pedant and anyone with approaching or passing winter colds.

For anyone feeling under the weather with partners very unwell including Mr @missy.

I had a tear for Miller & James (sounds like a sketch act which both may’ve loved).

@whisht good to see you back on the music boards! Don’t leave them -you make these boards hum & tingle -all…[Read more]

@missy That speech from Capaldi also chokes me up every time I watch it.

Well, fucking hell people from @missy to @Bluesqueakpip to @pedant and @gamergirlavatar @nerys @toinfinityandbepond @whisht (well, HELLOO you!) you’ve all expressed feelings on sexism, political correctness and  cooking. I missed the whole darn conversation! Exciting stuff. And a bit sad, to be honest. That there exist people who think that “PC…[Read more]

@missy it’s also worth noting that Mistress shortened to Mrs has historically been used by and for a woman who has achieved independent status – a cook, housekeeper, shopkeeper might be unmarried and ‘Mrs’. Or an older, unmarried, independent gentlewoman.

Mistress shortened to Miss was used more to denote a young woman still in the protection of…[Read more]

@missy If I hear Mayor I think it’s a man. Very confusing when it’s a female. The same applies (in my book) to all the other titles which are being changed to the male title. Isn’t that sexist? How strange that these females who are so determined to stamp out sexism, decide to use the male title? Perhaps they would prefer to be blokes? Or perha…

It is easier than saying “cameraperson”

Try ‘camera operator’, which has the virtue not implying that there is a cyborg gathering the pictures (or cinematographer – for stills there is no gendered way to say “photographer”).

Similar to the old canard of “chairman” – a perfectly proper change is to “chair” as the short form of “in the c…[Read more]

@missy technically Miss and Mrs both mean the same thing. And that thing is Mistress, which came to mean something else entirely…

when it comes to ‘man’ or ‘person’ I can’t help thinking it would be easier if we’d stuck to ‘wifman’ and ‘Werman’ (I think it was) and kept ‘man’ as gender neutral. But we didn’t.

  • @missy

    To quote Princess Anne;

    Bert Lance, actually.

Fact checking – it makes you look less ignorant.

  • @missy

It’s bowel streak, a vile misogynistic little shitweasel and noted Angry Virgin. and we are more than familiar with his vile spewings – and you would be too if you ever paid any attention to what people actually said, rather than just getting stampy-footed when people pointed out how gratuitously offensive you are being.

hm, maybe I’m being too subtle.

@missy – you are a person who if you were around very young people I know, I would try to not have you present.
If you were I’d have to have conversations with them about how wrong you were.
I wouldn’t call you stupid however, as that would be a way out of owning your opinions. And I would want the kids I know…[Read more]

oh @bluesqueakpip – you and your facts.

@Missy is perfectly entitled to her opinion whether its offensive to many many people.
Even if it makes other people retch or cry or shout or want to punch something.
Missy has an opinion and facts are irrelevant and her ability to not realise how offensive she is is not a reason to try and explain (however…[Read more]

    @missy and everyone

I must have missed this one the first time round. Oh, the life of a gender neutral job title. 😀

Anyway, the use of ‘actor’ for females as well as males predates PC culture. There’s two reasons for it – one is simply that an actor plays both male and female roles. I’m an actor (f) who generally plays roles (f) – but I’ve…[Read more]

Some people prefer not to be defined by their relationship to others, but in their own right. Not a hard concept to grasp.

Actor, waiter and mayor (one who acts, one who waits-on and one who leads city government) are all gender neutral terms. They only became something else when people feel the need to point out that a woman’s primary…[Read more]
