Rutherford Hayes won by one ECV. It was Andrew Jackson losing to John Quincy Adams who was behind in the popular vote & lost the electoral college. Admittedly I didn’t fact check. But I get a few points, I think, for remembering it was 48 ‘normal’ elections & 4 abnormals.  The whole thing is worse than actuarial study.

Fractional electoral votes, low African American turnout, promising funds in exchange for electoral college votes, using emotional, undignified language in order to platitudinously repeat “national unity,” preparedness for aggression against minorities, using sexist, homophobic, anti-intellectual language, promoting domestic jingoism & school prayer,  promoting anti-choice for women, to the extent that earlier success for  pro-choice in the 1970s would be denounced & removed. I think that’s sufficient, when combined with loud voices & clever voices, to consider change to America’s EC  – an outdated & ill-equipped system for the modern day. Certainly, that’s all they have, at the moment, & until it changes (& referenda are notoriously anti-democratic according to various political analysts) nothing will change.

no, I didn’t make a mistake. I am fully aware of the electoral college having lived in the States for a while.

It was an inversion. Inversions rarely happen. Even Rutherford Hayes lost the popular vote & the electoral college vote at the same time.  All the vote tallies, as aggregates, are frequently out of whack when elections are close.

At times, electoral colleges seem a good thing. The current US Constitution  seems a good thing. Those who argued against it in the 90s, felt it was a dilapidated system, preventing ’emotion’ when emotion can’t be prevented. It’s very difficult to be unemotional. That was certainly the case when Bush was elected by ballots in Florida which were mostly incorrectly counted -however, that’s a separate issue.

Just from you point of view in the comments above, I was disconcerted as to the responses. I was also  interested in how people felt about Re/Brxt : it’s a complicated mess.

If the message of the referendum is deliberately misleading, then legally, I suppose, one could find an alternate measure of more accurate reasons for Brexit.

I believe I wasn’t clear. This was about how the message of Brexit was displayed. The 1st post, earlier, said “the Pakis are taking our jobs. Mosques….not churches” which is, as you say, ridiculous. But my family-in-law & their voluminous friends had these opinions over many years.  Reasons for Brexit were hidden behind mantras on radio, telly, in child care or advanced education & tech. centres. And yes, who would have the time & money to fight legal cases? I don’t think I hinted at this?  The  person you’ve been chatting with for 6 years now isn’t that silly, is she? 😀

I was referring to constitutional or, more properly, conventional legal Argument or Opinion which would inquire into the Matter, determining the composition of the argument & parties in favour of Brexit or Remain, correctly ‘educated’ the public allowing for impartial judgements involving the ‘organs’ of government: local, county, regional (the Scottish legislature having greater power over its citizens than other regions) according to the Acts of Parliament. Obviously, some dolly taking time off work, selling their 100 000 pound home in order to ‘fight’ the ‘incorrect messaging’ wasn’t my secret plan to fight inflation. Nope, sorry, my automaton brain meant the secret plan to fight Brexit.

I’m aware this is such a personal problem, too. I don’t live there. Our referenda are markedly different in their measurement.  Also, I don’t think anyone on this Forum, who’s a regular, would ever think that communism was a lesser evil than fascism (though Corbyn from what you’ve all said might disagree!). In the end, the message & its conveyance, it’s method of conveyance caused a problem. Also Brexit-parliamentary supporters were unprepared for the result.

As for “how many times” -I think that’s a difficult point. If the entire country will change, would it be politic to ensure everyone understands the consequences. DO busy folk read the pamphlets? Or do they listen to hyped up  talk show hosts on their way to Boots? Are they Guardian readers? And should that matter?

All perfectly good questions.

I don’t want to tag people who may be interested in this because it appears I started a war. I apologise if it came across like that. I honestly was looking for answers and ideas. In my original post, I was amazed about the ‘provenance’ of your Labour leader.

…when I did put it down to simple racism. But then Trump came in and suddenly the exact same people who’d been bitterly complaining about people not accepting Obama were hysterically rejecting Trump…

On this I must disagree. Trump is a dreadful leader. He did not emerge victorious according to the vote-count. He’s a mad-man tweeting because he can’t remember what he’s actually said in meetings. His attitude towards Defence is appalling & has had horrendous consequences for service men & women, including Military Intelligence in Australia.  Trump ought to be rejected & impeached. He doesn’t acknowledge Islam as a religion. He wants walls tendered to separate Mexicans from “true Americans.” And “global warming is fake news.”

Comparing Obama & Trump, or Clinton & Trump is a tad unjust. And the message there was also wrong: “We will re-open Detroit & put industry back where it belongs” and people believed him. He was lying. Or stupid. Or both.

Crikey, it’s way past my bedtime. But, in thinking of  immigrants & how different voters felt immigration to be a cacophony, with tolerance for only “some” but not “others” I’m reminded of Marcuse -at least I think it is: the law & order are everywhere the law & order which protect the established hierarchy.

I would say voters were oppressed, if the falsity of the referendum  wasn’t exposed. Are they owed the truth?

You were suggesting not all votes are equal because, by almost voting for the Lib Dems, which have anti-Brexit stance, you were attempting to unseat the unpleasant Labour candidate?

Had you done so, even though you oppose Remain, it would appear to others as ‘mildly fickle’ or worse, ‘using’ your vote for a specific reason -to unseat a candidate (I’m not supporting that view but imagining a stance which could be taken & how you’d feel about this/others) but this is a question of local communities & not all parties would be ‘banging on’ about Brexit. Surely it’s acceptable to vote a candidate in because 8 important reasons affect you, for example,  and two others, may not. The lesser of the two evils in this instance?

If the message of the referendum is deliberately misleading, then legally, I suppose, one could find an alternate measure of more accurate reasons for Brexit. It seemed to me that this election still focussed on Leave/Remain. If this is so, then it could suggest that people were beginning to change their mind and now that they understood some of the devastating consequences of Brexit, wanted to ‘back out and Remain.’ However the stats you outline suggest that’s not the case.

But the 4 year break & the continued ‘bantering’ would demonstrate Brexit’s lack of a coherent plan & most importantly, the means of delivery, the chosen phrases for campaigns, disingenuous, and when Brexit was in, I’m sure it surprised the established hierarchy as they’d not predicted the result. In this case the votes, either equal or not,   were based on a number of false arguments. Thus, the referendum should ‘fail.’  If the votes are counted country-wide, then I’m assuming again that there’s no 7 step process as exist here.

here, it’s the majority of people (nationwide) in a majority of states or a “double majority.” A triple majority is if  referendum affects people directly in a specific state & where a majority is also required.

That Capaldi speech about being kind keeps springing to mind. And I think last year’s Very Nu-Who was bringing up the very messages people needed to hear but without yelling & rampaging & massive distractions by the ….BBC?

The ABC still (I think) has the capacity to continually expose govt cranks but more people are brainwashed into thinking the ABC is some secret satellite of the USSR. Mainly because there’s reds under every bed, still, & naturally, the USSR is basically the same animal.

I’d avoid anything Kogan from  experience but the Logitech ‘phones work quite well -again from experience at university & in high school where kids are coding, watching plays for drama modules, musical composition. etc….

Back before internet & other fun we had a great show from Scotland, No**h Square (yep I really want to hide it) with Phil Davis (Sherlock & other magic), Kevin McKidd & my personal girl-crush Helen McCrory, who at 50-something is more beautiful than she was in the 90s. Then she was shit-hot & pretty, now, she’s on another level. Oh, this is Syzygy talking, not the younger one who will soon be introduced to this fantabulous show. Cold Play’s song is on Helen Mac’s radio as she’s zooming to Liverpool.

On another note I’d mentioned Marcella? The first 5 eps seemed pretty good & then it stunk. Something ridiculous happened. So if you want it-makes-sense-telly please skip that one. That one I’m happy saying out loud. Though the words I have for it aren’t good ‘out loud’ words.

I was always told if you rode a bike once, you can ride it always. I was one of those. As for ball & racket sports, out of the question.  I could manage badminton. Until I joined a raggedy club of pretty nasty blokes who laughed sarcastically every time I missed a serve. Never went back/

Also, back to the Christmas viewing questions? Are we watching Scrooge with Mr Sim? Or It’s a Wonderful Life? Or, something more ‘modern’ like Die Hard (I like the airport one) although Die Hard 1 has some funny lines: “come to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs.” Makes me smile every time.  Noor Inyat Khan – I’ve been borderline obsessed with her since reading stuff about the women of SOE. I ran a history taster session on the French Resistance and Occupied France with a group of Year 10s a couple of years back and when I talked about her, you could see the reaction from (esp.) the girls in the room. Quite extraordinary.

That sounds brilliant Cathannabel. I think, equally, your own enthusiasm, knowledge & teaching ability would’ve impressed your students -the way we go about things as teachers, the paths we storm or gentle navigate – have an enormous reaction. I’m saying all this with an eye on young Thane’s teachers. Not all had knowledge or the capacity. So from one teacher to another, a job well done, Cath.

The new series is nigh…..I am excited.

I get that….it’s this Doctor. But it’s exactly the sort of thing a ….I’m going to get trolled now, I can feel it…..a …..companion would say & the Doctor would say, back “oh, yes, the French invited kissing you pillock!” Which is the funny bit.

Finally. I watched Resolution.

I HAD seen maybe 10 minutes (Dalek on Lin & she was very, very good) -but not the first 2-3 minutes as the 3 soldiers bury their Dalek pieces.

Some bits were odd. Doctor: “I’m going old school. Using lights, street cameras” etc.

Dalek then shoots them out and Doctor says: “it’s shot them out!” But I aint no writer. It seemed a tad repetitive.

But. The angles, the new lenses, the TARDIS was very real & totally confident. I didn’t realise, til I watched the Special Features, just how exy it was. How enormous in colour & movement & tone, too.

But the audio? That was probably the best balanced voice/music/sound FX we’ve had in Who. Adegboyega’s voice was superb & the music was beautifully balanced except one slightly odd drum kick suddenly ‘oops’ cut to flying Dalek didn’t work.  Very minor thing, obviously. The skill sets where you see Charlotte/Lin driving the car & yet it’s a pod car? blew my mind.

What I liked, & only thinking about it later, looking back at Season 11, is how the Dalek plot was handled. It killed everything in its way, immediately. But it was still weak, with Lin’s personality set up with sufficient subtlety that it made sense for her, like Aaron, but for different reasons, to defeat  the uncased Dalek. Normally Dalek episodes are  sombre, horribly scary, the worst of the worst of squid enemies out there but this was differently toned?

Perhaps the lenses? The movement between people & the on-going conversations created a different mood? Less of the “you will be exterminated” & more room for Ryan’s & Aaron’s chat. A still camera. Elongating those moments.

Liked it. I might watch it again. After I’ve had some pickled onions. If it’s one thing I like with Daleks, it’s microwaved spinach & pickled onions. With ‘corn.

Finally I can say I understand who Jonathan Miller is! I have Kulture! But he’s died?  I’m too late, again. And very sad.  I worry that there will be so many great, learned people -writers, directors, producers, playwrights & bands I’ll barely know. I don’t know, entirely, if we are creating fantastic new ones? We should be. My generation. Our gen has a lot of ‘stuff’ -we have food, clothing, rooves & clean water. I’m talking here -not in every part of Australia. Poverty is endemic but I know one thing, sportsmen & women are being lauded waay too much. Some sporting person I won’t name said “the Australian fires are a punishment from god.” Urgh. They can say it but it’s being reported a lot which is the problem. I think.

I’ve also heard of The Mikado @bluesqueakpip ! All on “me own” which are words which must never be said together. Or written, but still are.

From a musician’s point of view, I knew of Miller before Clive James. But I tweeted something today except I have only 2 followers 1 of whom (or is it “which” as a follower isn’t a specific human person? @mudlark !!!! ‘whom or which?’) I mentioned in this post. I loved Miller & my parents – who despised irreverence loved James (he was just ‘Clive’ to us, though broadly sounding it would’ve been “Clooaghfe”) @blenkinsopthebrave would be able to remember those diphthongs easily. They’re music to an ex-pat’s ears. And you know the ‘whom & which’ too. 🙂

If you think of the Doctor’s speech with Missy & the Master on kindness, that really sums up Barthes’s idea beautifully. Well no, I don’t understand that, but it sums it up. I’m very certain of this  🙂 And that particular speech, showing the range of Capaldi’s ability & tonal control, breaks my heart every time I hear it.

Bowie’s blonde hair & Spray Tan Era was a tad …odd. But yes, his impeccable timing, no over-doing it on the stage gave hints of the performer he would eventually become, I think. A more approachable stage act with a genuine connection to the audience from 1998 (to 2013).

@pedant Yes! we did discuss ATCs. For a second, I was madly attempting to uhm, gee, ‘work out’ what it stood for. 🙂 But that came easy.

The fluidity of say, a performance by a dramatic coloratura of  The Queen of The Night or a beenindruckend fundamental of a 100Hz demonstrates the tessitura of female and male vocals we talked about before.  My thoughts beyond that specific area of expertise are lacking in spirit: My learned brain knows what femininity or masculinity is but maybe a tiny portion of that mind is broken.  So I seek other’s opinions. In reading comments on the other thread, it’s a good thing to seek!

After all, the weasel words of the QLD public service aid you in their service -they’re good for that. But you do real study which truly benefits many others.

Actually on the ‘squire’ definition; the book I consulted regarding female and male attitudes across time, did refer to gallant gentlemen, but in that case (I think it was in Babbletower) with decent dramatic irony and a bit of fury mixed in….I hope you can take time off for Christmas -you and your partner?

Well, fucking hell people from @missy to @bluesqueakpip to @pedant and @gamergirlavatar @nerys @toinfinityandbepond @whisht (well, HELLOO you!) you’ve all expressed feelings on sexism, political correctness and  cooking. I missed the whole darn conversation! Exciting stuff. And a bit sad, to be honest. That there exist people who think that “PC means an extreme reaction to people who are socially disadvantaged.”

I read that 3 times @roger429 or 666 or whatever: that we must not be ‘too kind’ to people who are disadvantaged. In other words, we need to stay mean. My mind’s blown! It’s been there all the time, just waiting. Mean-ness is right, folks. People who can’t walk, have a visual impairment, who’ve been sexually abused & tell their story with tears & shakes are apparently “snow-flakes” who can’t “handle life.” But we have to be patient now, us mean people, because it’s “all PC.”

It’s sad.

Aaand I’ve stuffed up some of the name handles which is pretty sad of me considering I’ve changed mine constantly. Never content, always worrying at something…. Not mean enough. Not bitter enough.

OK. Here’s this bit from The Summer Before The Dark (Lessing)

Lessing’s character speaks of “the spirit” -the state, or the condition of the emanation of attractive availability: “come and sniff and taste.”  It leaves a bad taste, now, doesn’t it?

Then this from Mantel’s Giving Up the Ghost

One thing worried the ‘real me’ (the mean me was obviously fake news) and that’s that a person’s femaleness or maleness doesn’t matter. At all.

I think it does? Is it sexist to acknowledge a woman? Simply, as a woman? Not in a job-unrelated-to-woman-role.

I was a captain once (briefly) & that didn’t have a gender attached. But I’m still woman.

I was sexually abused by a man. An old man; for maybe 10 or 13 years. That was definitely because I was a girl-child, and he a strong, large man. It may’ve started when I was two, or even one. I don’t want any sympathy here -this isn’t “attention seeking” (the previous paragraph in Mantel’s book).  It’s a fact. It happened. I couldn’t stop it. I didn’t know ‘it.’

When I did know, and I could tell, I ended him.

limos? I know. Same here. The lady who I’m taking (can’t take guys from other schools -and she has a b/f so I don’t wanna do anything that will cause problems). is wearing white & I have to get a white corsage.

A limo I aint doing. No way. I’ll catch a bus. But the guys drive so I might hop a lift. I think the girls are going with us or some of us to a special pre-drink as much alcohol as you can formal for an hour. But the guys won’t. I think they’ll drive to the post-formal (get it all?) & get fairly pissed. I’ll be home well before. Photos with family I can handle although I’m calming mum down . If she can’t leave the house I do have a dad so that’s good. Although we had a massive row today. Wow. That’s a thing.

Hey guys & thank you. I really feel like I was walking to the gallows every time I moved from class to class. Didn’t know which teacher was going to get all “personal” & say “mate, you haven’t opened up to me recently. In fact, at all? Please tell me everything about your life!”

Why? I’m not really interested in theirs. Sounds rude, though. So I learned to say “OH YEAH! Sure, and how are YOU?”

Endless parties? A gap year? Working your way around the world as a short order cook on a tramp steamer prepatory to writing the Great Australian novel?

Oh, parties 🙁 I was explaining to @pedant and also dad & mum that parties are awful. Binge drinking. Shit music. I have a mate turning 18 in 2 days & at least (he’s a Western movie fan like dad about “which I have trouble coping” unless it’s The Man From Laramie . And the other one with J. Stewart?) he’s having a proper party. We’re dressing like cowboys or cowgirls, I think? I’m going to use mum’s makeup to create a scar.

See? That’s what I’m up to. No great novels or small ones. Maybe back packing but mainly learning common sense things . I can’t drive. I can cycle a bike & run like hell but not driving & it’s really expensive.

Oh, and I can’t really cook. Apparently lessons start next week where I’ll be given $20 & have to buy food for meals for 4 days. I don’t know where they keep meat in supermarkets. This is why I need ‘other learnings’.
