Just read in today’s Metro that the 1967 Troughton doc story The Macra Terror is to be rereleased as a DVD it being being redone as animation with the original audio recordings to be released next March. Surprised not heard about this before now via the official BBC site

I loved this episode and felt that JW was continuing to cement herself into the role as the Doctor. I felt that this episode was essentially a continuation of the introduction of the new Doctor and the new companions.

As for the Stenza, I am not 100% convinced yet that they are a part of any underlying arc though I am not ruling that out yet. I don’t know why but there was a fleeting moment when Bradley Walsh’s character was rubbing his chest or abdomen that made me think he’s only signed up for one series and given that Graham is supposed to be a cancer survivor I couldn’t quite shake the feeling they were setting up an out for him, especially given B W’s workload on his quiz show does not appear to have been effected.

As for the new TARDIS interior I felt we haven’t really seen enough to make a proper judgement on it, though I did like what I saw . If memory serves me all the post AG Tardis interiors have been very organic or steampunky and pre gap the interiors and control panels were more technical and scientific so it’s not surprising they’ve continued in the same vein.

Hmmm, I see she’s going with a northern accent lol so reinforcing the notion of the Doctor comes from the Gallifreyan “ North” . Is the background music the actual music for the series, it seems more in keeping with past MG style music and not as pop culture orientated that the Beebs British trailers have been indicating. I think I actually prefer the Auzzie version as you can concentrate on the action and what is said better.

I had the opurtunity to watch the teaser again but on the TV today rather than on YouTube. For some reason the music didn’t seem quite so jarring for some reason, weather it was the volume seemed lower or I was seeing it on a bigger screen it seemed better.

@blenkinsopthebrave hmm have we been spoiled by the magnificent Murray Gold’s most excellent musical renditions over the years or is it I’m getting to be an old fuddy-duddy but I agree I hope that teasers music is not going to be the musical tone of Jodie’s tenure as the Doctor don’t get me wrong modern music can be appropriate but the key word is where appropriate.

Hmmm I had wondered if they were going to go for the 20th or 21st October it being the weekend just before Dr Who’s anniversary on the 23rd and it being almost a relaunch of who with Jodie and Chibbers taking over. Of course if they wanted to go the whole hog so to speak they could have gone for the Tuesday as a one off then settled to whatever day it’s going to be broadcast ( just my own wild theory).

Don’t know if anyone else has seen the Mirrors article about there being discussions on possibly moving Who to a Sunday slot. Not sure if it’s a fake news article but my gut reaction was Nooooooo to me the Spiritual home of Dr Who has always been early Saturday evenings. In my own personal opinion a lot of BG Who’s problems started when they started messing with its time slot and moving it to week days.

Well what can I say what a marvellous send off for Peter I couldn’t but help think that the tessera (well that’s what I think I heard their name as) were actually trying to ensure the Doctor’s Regenerated.  It was as expected that the Captain was a Lethbridge-Stewart and Mark Gatiss played him with definite aplomb.

I thought the use of Bill was nice and actually gave the Doctor a chance a proper chance to say goodbye. Loved the cameo of Mz Coleman as Clara, love the character or hate her Clara was such a big part of the Capaldi  Doctors early life it would have been wrong not to have played the character some kind of nod much like they did with Karen Gillan as Amy for Matt Smith.

As to the first impressions of Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor and they are only initial impressions because of the obviously short screen time is that she could quite possibly make a very good Doctor. My one issue being haven’t we done the Doctor falling from the sky from the TARDIS.

Overall I enjoyed the episode and long may we all be able to enjoy who.

Can I say Hear Hear to those saying let’s just give Jodie a chance and see how her first season goes I am purposely not including the regeneration scene as such a short screen time is not realistically giving her a chance and given the dramatic change it will probably take an episode or two to bed the new doctors character. Also JWs taking on the role of the Doctor is a very brave and courageous act because if she does disastrously it will almost certainly bar future females and possibly even a non white actor from taking the role in the future. Given this fact she should be applauded for her courage and CC must have been very sure of his choice as if it does not go well his run as showrunner will be very short. He could have possibly gone for “safer and more popular” female actors but has instead gone for someone he apparently believes can deliver the right female Doctor.

@craig I was only say it because between spoilers and BBC approved spoiler pages thes going to be a lot of repetition and duplication of effort  otherwise an to be honest I am a slow one finger typist myself so if I can cut down on duplicating replays it would be nice 😃

@blenkinsopthebrave don’t think it will be The Lethbridge-Stewart but it could be his father as Gatis’s character appears to comes from the First World War which would make him too old

Well the announcement of JW as the next Doctor has caused dissension in the Devilish household 😭😢 when telling my partner about her appointment he said “well I won’t be watching it” when I asked him why he said the Doctor has always been a male and the change will lose the show viewers. Now whilst I may agree the show may lose some “fans” I think it will possibly gain even more as young girls who may have not been interested in science fantasy (I agree the show has never really been science fiction , but has always had a science element as part of its conception from the start as I understood). You only have to look at the young girls reaction that I caught on YouTube, sorry can’t post a link, to understand that there will be a whole new generation of viewers who will be more likely to watch the show as it will be seen as less of a boys show. Now if this is political correctness well I find I can go along with it as it may just in the long run garauntee the survival of the show. Keeping something a certain way just for the sake of keeping the status quo leads to stagnation to grow you need evolution and I feeel that is what the show has done since the restart AG.

@thane15 to add to your list of possible hints that the Doctor could become female you can even go back to Tennantdoc and the DoctorsDaughter episode and  Jenny who was actually supposed to be a clone if a female Doctor wasn’t possible Jenny should have been male

I have been a Who fan since early childhood (early seventies) And having  watched/read most of the posts regarding Mz Whittaker’s appointment I thought I would put down some of my thoughts and apologise is any of my points have already been made.

Given that Who started in the 60’s broadcasting was still pretty much a male dominated domain so early Who would not have considered a gender change for the main role, but if the  show had started today the idea of changing the Doctor’s gender would almost certainly been considered before now as it would have been considered an almost logical extension of the possibilities of regeneration. So I really don’t agree with all the nay sayers who are saying they will not watch Who any more. What is important whatever the gender is that the actor/ess has the ability carry the role and embodies all that the Doctor stands for.

Well I will say I am sorry JWs outfit isn’t an indication on how she will look because I though it gave her both an air of gravitas and mystery at once and the boots definitely gave an impression of I’m here to kick *&& and take names. Oh lord you do realise the darn fashion police will be scrutinising her every outfit she is seen in public between now and the next series

Well all I can say is who is really shocked I think Moffat had been setting up the prospect of a female Doctor for the last few seasons with the change of the Master into Missy and the change of sex when the General regenerated last season setting the precedent. Don’t really know Jodi Whittaker as an actress but from comments here I have high hopes she will carry the role off. Though did anyone get a sort of Captain Jack vibe in the way she was dressed.

@craig  I agree with  much of what you said I properly just didn’t express my feeling on the matter very well. In the main I would also be pleased if they manage to keep the identity of the new Doctor “secret” until the airing of the Xmas special as it would add to the sense of expectation for the episode. Don’t know what the practicalities of filming the changeover of identies to the new Doctor so close to the airing , especially with all the FX involved nowadays. You’re properly right about the Carper’s well “carping” about the choice of casting whenever it happens and as long as the “actor” is good at his/her job and is capable pulling off the role it shouldn’t matter as over the years the role has been played in many ways each doctor has bought different aspects to the role. I can’t say that I have hated any actor who has played the role just that some have played him with more success than other.

    #60559
    Devilishrobby @replies

Maybe the reason they have yet to announce the new Doctor is that they aren’t going to before the Xmas special due to the casting really being controversial i.e. It is a gender switch or even a non Caucasian. Now personally I have no issue with the Doctor being female or non Caucasian but unfortunately there are idiots out there that will or would. Though in my opinion delaying the announcement of the casting if for this reason will make the situation worse.

@nick I agree I don’t think a Valeyard story is likely especially as in part it would mean that the BG Timelords would have had to known of the great Time War which just doesn’t work for me. If anything I suspect whoever bought him back would make the Valeyard something like the Other TenantDoc or even the Jenni the Doctors Daughter,  but one  gone bad so he is really a copy of the Doctor  if that makes sense.

As to Mondasian Cybermen vs Cybus type Cybermen , I tend to agree ultimately the Mondosian’s pack more horror because of their more  obvious human origin. Modern Cybermen are almost to robotic as to be a more caricatured entity imo.

@nick I think the BBC made a commercial decision on the 45 minute thing as outside of BBC on commercial channels you have to factor in the time added by commercial breaks which makes a BBC 45 minute programme 1 hour long. When watching  Who on say What was Uk Gold for example the episodes are shown over an hour

Hmm I actually like the idea of this all being some kind of simulation al la Extremis, as to why the Doctor regenerates well what if the Doctor has known he was going to need to regenerate but hasn’t been sure he was going to because of what happened in Hell Bent ( well it always puzzled me why he didn’t just regenerate each time he died) and in reality has been trying to convert Missy to take over as the Doctor.

As to The TLs I was glad to see them reintroduced instead of the Doctor  just being the last of the time lords. Having said that now that they exist in the whoverse once again there’s no need for them to be making constant appearances, a good character or plot concept should be used sparingly.

The issue the Doctor has he’s now faced with a similar dilemma that he faced in Genesis of the Daleks he Could be potentially be affecting the timeline of the universe and incidentally his own time line. Bill is the first Monosian type Cyberman and if he stops their further development and either manages to decyberise Bill or even kill her( for the greater good) the cyber race might never come to pass as this ship is the birthplace of the cybermen. In addition to this from statements by Sims Master to Missy I get the feeling the Master has a greater part in the genesis of the CyberRace so if Missy interferes she’s also interfering with her own timeline as the Masters statement about worrying about his future incarnation firmly places Missy as post SimsMaster.

Omg OmgOmg worked out the janitor wasn’t what he appeared about halfway through and guessed at the Master about 3/4 of the way thought Bill might just avoid full cyberization  though. Damn didn’t see her effectively being the first cyberman though. Really need a  second, third and fourth rewatching to really absorb the full ramifications and damn it looks like the Doctor’s regeneration is going to be triggered by something that happens next week judging from the beginning of the episode.

At this point I wil be disappointed with Moffat if Bill is killed although this appears to be what is going to happen as in my own opinion this would essentially be a rehash of last seasons ending with the Doctor  again trying to find some loophole with which to save Bill. As to the possibility of Missy returning to her evil ways or even dying trying to do good we will have to see as in my opinion these would be the more interesting reasons for the Doctor  falling. In fact with the situation with Bill almost being a carbon copy of last year I am wondering if  Capaldi was originally planning on leaving the show last year and was persuaded to stay

@sjk1000 that’s easily explained they just do some kind of conversation that they did with Clara. Where she had a conversation on the tardis phone with Matt Smith at the end of the first episode with Capaldi where he persuades her to stay with the new Doc.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Now that’s just plain stupid of Moffat the theory of time dilation effect of a black holes corona just wouldn’t be that great from where I am understanding this ship is and 400 miles is just not a big enough distance. Hell  to get the sort of theoretical time differation they are talking about I would imagine the end of the ship will have to pactically be sitting on the event horizonwhich would mean the ship would be being torn apart, unless they have Gallifreyan technology that is…..</p>

    #59457
    Devilishrobby @replies

@nick my purpose in commenting about Susan’s status as either Time lady or ordinary Gallifreyan it had a bearing on the ability of the production team to cast another actress in the role of Susan. Of course there are other ways of becoming a Time lord/lady, though to be fair River actually paralleled the time lords method in that she had been prenatally exposed to the time vortex by the Ponds travels in the Tardis.

    #59450
    Devilishrobby @replies

On the Susan returns debate in theory it is very easily done and not needing the original actress if working on the premises that Susan was a first regeneration time lady another actress cold stand in as a later incarnation. Of course if Susan is just an ordinary Galliferyan that then becomes more problematic as my understanding and I will happily be corrected is that it it takes exposure to the schism of the time vortex to make a galliferyan into a Timelord.

@thane15 agreed and unfortunately although in my opinion Peter has been a great dramatic actor in the role for the bean counters at the Beeb he hasn’t had the heart throb appeal that the likes of David and Matt brought to the role so I am expecting that the new Doctor if they haven’t gone the gender changing route will definitely be much younger. In today’s broadcasting environment if it goes international they are trying to capture the widest possible spectrum so having just a good actor/actress isn’t enough if the could I bet they would get a Chris Hemsworth in the role just to pull the audience. Yes and I realise I am properly being a tad cynical in thinking this.

    Devilishrobby @replies

You do realise that in effect a character like the Master never truly dies especially in a series that involves time travel. Look at all the adventures that River has had since she died. All it needs is for the writers to say” I think we need to use the Master/Missy in this story oh but he/she is is dead. Don’t worry we’ll take him/her from a point before their death”.  I mean we have all been speculating on where Missy and the Master  are on their personal Time lines  any way so an extra adventure can always be fit in by the writers by saying oh this happened for him/her before all that happened. So no need for sad thoughts on the loss of a character 😉
