@puroandson Hello!  Doing alright except the last two days have been a little rough, some money was stolen online, had to involve the FBI, have no idea what’s going to happen.  Very stressful. How are you doing?  How is your family surviving the year off from Doctor Who?

Agree, “The Doctor should not have relationships with those who can sink him -or he himself can sink (we know of Adelaide and others who explain the consequence -usually tragic – of the Doctor Victorious).”  This path seems to lead down the Valeyard street for sure, and who would be keen to stop that?  The Time Lords, ME and Missy.

Here are some of my very unformed thoughts: I’ve always been a little suspicious of how the cracks got there in the first place.  After it was explained on Gallifrey that Clara living outside of the isolation room with her heart beats time locked would rip a tear in space and time,  I got to wondering if this is where the crack started.   Sort of a very odd bootstrap paradox? Since I am convinced River is Tasha Lem it furthers my questions about River’s relationship to the church that tried to stop the Doctor creating the crack in time.  She was engineered by the church to be a weapon, but also the child of the Doctor’s best friends, she tried to kill him in the same episode she gave up her regenerations to save his life, if River is Tasha Lem she heads the very church that engineered her, she kills him and then freezes time itself to keep him alive, basically her whole life is a constant dichotomy.  River is always torn between the church’s desire and her own Free Will.

Maybe Clara was chosen to save the Doctor by Missy, ME, and the Time Lords, but at the same time she may have needed to be eradicated by the people with foresight from a possible second future, a Valeyard future.   I think it’s odd how her mother is Ravenswood, so Raven as protector who will always find her, River is shown as protector and connected to Clara and is shown wearing a raven feather cape, and then when Tasha comes to help Clara she is dressed as a raven.  So Raven is helper and death at the same time, which holds true in most symbolic versions of the raven.  The raven is also associated with the void, or black holes, which would fit Clara.  Above all raven is seen as a trickster and bringer of wisdom, prophesy and death.  Raven comes to her like a dark angel to help and guide, but at the same time is the destiny, is death “As you come into this world, something else is also born. You begin your life, and it begins a journey towards you. It moves slowly, but it never stops. Wherever you go, whatever path you take, it will follow. Never faster, never slower. Always coming. You will run, it will walk. You will rest, it will not. One day, you will linger in the same place too long. You will sit too still or sleep too deep. And when, too late, you rise to go, you will notice a second shadow next to yours. Your life will then be over.  I feel like their is a connection, I haven’t worked it out yet but I’m going to chew on it now that I’m sober.  (:  What do you think?

I had a thought (could be the blackberry wine talking) after watching ‘The Husbands of River Song’ for (actually it best not to give a number on how many times I’ve watched this episode or ‘Heaven Sent’) let’s just say the fourth time, I realised that River has a costume with raven wings, and if you subscribe to my crazy theory on Tasha Lem, she is also sporting raven wings on her outfit when driving the TARDIS.  Just saying.  Also, little miss Charlotte has a picture of a raven behind her, that we assume she painted.  Also, just saying.

Back to my wine, my reruns and feeling sorry for myself.

The idea of a female Doctor doesn’t work for me because of my view on regeneration and intrinsic qualities that remain throughout each incarnations. The Master and the Doctor in my opinion are archetypes in the Whoniverse and feel that the Doctor throughout his regeneration has represented the traditional Yang Magician and the Master has personified the Yin High Priestess, and I would have said that about the Master before he ever became Missy. That’s why the regeneration of the Master into Missy was brilliant to me, and not at all gimmicky or pushing boundaries for the sake of pushing boundaries.   The Master/Missy is a creator archetype, be it for good or bad, the Doctor tends to mess things up in the role of creator.   The Doctor follows more the pattern of the trickster hero.  The archetype the two characters have represented are very Yin Yang and that contrast makes for excellent chemistry.  If I felt that the Doctor regenerating into a woman made sense for his character I would be all for it, but I don’t see that. Romana as Roman I can see, the Master as Missy, absolutely. I tend to like contrast, but also balance and chemistry.  I think at some point there will be a writer who runs out of ideas and has a block, and imagine an easy way to freshen things up and create a buzz would be changing the Doctor to a woman, so I except the inevitable, but I don’t think it’s a good choice for the character. It is my desire to see integrity in the writing and a clean continuation of the beautifully designed and complex relationships maintained without gimmicks.

I will give it a chance of course,  just was disappointed over the choices and was venting.

I HOPE it is great, and of course I can’t judge if it’s good or not yet, no one can, that would be silly, just venting over the choices. I know I probably shouldn’t of, I knew darn well I was going to get a cacophony of people complaining I can’t judge it until I had seen it, etc. and I even tried to edit my comment and basically delete everything since I already knew the responses, but I couldn’t, guess it was past time to be allowed for deletion.

Just to clarify,  I’m always glad to see diversity, but what I meant about a “diversity formula” is difficult to explain without people misunderstanding. I’ll try, but I may just be confusing people more on what I really mean.  I teach High School and rarely do I have a class so homogeneous as the press photo of Class.  How about a young man in High School who still looks young?   Happens all the time since at least half the boys don’t go through full puberty until Junior or Senior year.  How about an overweight girl?  How about a transgender teen?  How about an unattractive girl or boy?  How about a kid in a wheelchair?   What I mean by diversity formula is: one good looking thin Caucasian girl, one good looking thin Caucasian boy, one darker skinned good looking thin boy or girl, one medium skinned toned thin good looking boy or girl, and they all should be medium height or taller.  In the States this “diverse” group is as predictable as rain in entertainment.  Skin tone does not equal diversity to me, it’s a silly formula in my opinion and there is nothing diverse about it.  I see it as actors playing teens who are all “thin good looking people of average to tall height in their late twenties with varying amounts of melanin who all hit puberty early.” Like I said, hard to explain, and I doubt I actually clarified.  I’m terrible at writing my thoughts.  Don’t really even know why I’m trying or why I’m being so blunt.  It’s tax day here, so probably just stress clouding my head.

In my area we have an annual Doctor Who Ball.  The theme changes a little each year.  Someone wrote about it, link below.  I highly recommend one for every town.  We went this year, and we had a blast.  🙂   We are in the background of one of the photos – tallest girl and tallest boy, oddly enough.  We are on opposite sides of the photo because in social dancing of this type you rotate partners until you come full circle.  I’m in a very much NOT screen accurate Tasha dress and hubby is dressed as the 10th.  There was a young lady in a perfectly screen accurate Tasha in one the photos with the author, she was the shortest girl, so of course we took many pictures together.  Two Tashas, that’s a scary thought.  😉

Class?  Wish they had come up with a Doctor Who spin-off for fans, families  or created something smart, funny and whimsical, like a Vastra, Jenny, Strax with Captain Jack spin-off.  Why not a spin-off characters from the verse? Why not an educational and whimsical journey with the 8th Doctor? How about a fun period adventure/mystery/cerebral show with Amy and Rory in the crazy London thirties? People would be over the moon for any of the above ideas, and instead we get another sexy, dark “shocker show” for teens.

Let’s face it, nothing shocks teens today, they’re overexposed and over it. Really, aren’t a lot of us bored of it?  That’s all there is for teens to watch already, or the ever dumb Disney shows as the one alternative. Give them something fun, whimsical, smart and adventurous – name one show for teens that has THAT formula? I expected something different from the makers of Doctor Who. The reason Doctor Who, Sherlock, Downton Abbey and Big Bang Theory are so beloved is because they are original, smart, fun and brilliantly casted and written, we care about the characters and we see the universal truths in these original shows. Ness may be a brilliant writer, but he may not be able to overcome poor casting, teen formula sex and unoriginal style. It looks like we are getting 90210 Misfits.  :-\

Appreciate that the Doctor Who franchise went with some normal looking and less gorgeous casting for once, but it does look like a very flat and “formula” choice; the “diversity formula” which is always predictable and anything but truly diverse, more PC than diverse. Hope BBC doesn’t make the characters formula teens on top of it.</span>

Adric was the little boy from a planet of people who specialized in math and numbers, and admittedly he was as likable as Temple Grandin, but in a way I found that endearing, probably because of all the spectrum disorders in my family and in Silicon Valley.  Asperger syndrome is not a minority in Silicon Valley, it’s the norm, so maybe I like Adric because it’s like he came from my planet, LOL!  (;

@thedentistofdavros Matt Smith has that Fred Astaire ability to “bring up the room” and brighten the moment.  Very rare quality, that is so enjoyable to watch.

@arbutus Romana 2 is one of my favourite companions, I should have included her on my list.  I guess I felt the 4th had less tension with Sarah Jane Smith, but on the other hand, tension can be great for dramatic effect.  If I was adding to my list I would add the 4th and Romana and I hope no one is disappointed, but I would include Adric.  It was enjoyable to watch the Doctor treat Adric, who seemed somewhat autistic in my opinion, with fatherly care and respect.  I don’t know why so many people are down on Adric.  Could be that average people usually have a level of discomfort around spectrum disorder? I see people confused by my brother with Autism and finding his know-it-all assertions annoying, but he is so loyal and loving that I get annoyed with people’s impatient with him.

@janetteb I forgot about 7 and Ace.  Great compo!

@missy Osgood would be a fun companion.  I hope they give us lots of companions in the new series and she is one of them.

@puroandson and @winston Midges sound like hell @stitchintime Your bugs don’t sound so great either.  Never realised how lucky I am as far as bugs are concerned, or weather.  But on the other hand, we have the highest home prices in the world, and the worst smog.  The income gap is terrible here, no one under 45 can afford to buy or rent anything more than 500 square feet (prop 13 is why everyone over 45 has a giant home and everyone under 45 rents rooms, garages and huts) with the exception of the handful of young computer executives.  I would take the Midges over the house prices and plastic people.  Our biggest pest is “affluenza” and superficial SUV driving real estate vampires.

@arbutus Thanks! I think 12 may be favourite too, if I had to pick because like @winston I always like the current Doctor. @missy  Hope Capaldi stays on for at least 5 more seasons.  🙂

Also, like @thedentistofdavros I can’t understand not watching because of a companion or Doctor.  That’s what seems fickle to me.  The show casts the best of the best and I’ve never been disappointed yet.

@ichabod I think you’re right, ADD is more fitting for the Doctor – more like ADHD with 11 and 2!  🙂

It’s hard to pick a favorite doctor, I really like them all for different reasons.

11th is a pleasure to watch, and can bring me out of a bad mood in seconds.  Love how he almost dances through his time as the Doctor.  His mix of charisma, whimsy and curiosity puts a smile on my face every single time I watch him.  He has the wisdom of a sage and the enthusiasm of a child and that’s always a very endearing combination.

12th Doctor grew on me, but by the ninth series I was hooked, and I love how he seems worn out be at all, yet still is kind, still striving, still confident at the same time.  He is like someone with Aspergers who is somehow concealing he is an Empath, or protecting that side, almost burying it.  He is complex and lovable.

4th is like a combination of the 11th and 12th in many ways. He was my first Doctor, and made me an instant fan of the show.

@arbutus @thedentistofdavros @puroandson @ichobod When we were discussing Logolopolis on the music three it occurred to me I don’t have a very creative explanation for the Watcher.  I have a strange sort of unformed idea that it is a part of himself, but that seems almost too conventional.

What are the member’s of the Forum’s ideas and theories on the Watcher?  How would this play into our modern Doctor verse?  I’m very curious.

@missy @puroandson The very thought of him leaving made me panic, I almost feel we shouldn’t even discuss such a horrid thought for fear that putting it in the universe could make it real.  Murray Gold’s music is the constant companion and elevates every episode.  It would be more heartbreaking to hear Murray Gold was leaving than any actor or writer.  That would be the final blow of bad Doctor Who news 2016 that would just sink me.

After watching the mini episodes involving Amy and Rory, The Power of Three and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship again I have decided that Chibnall gets it.  He learned from 42 and is capable of better things.  I should have given him more credit.  His characterisation is great and his storylines are fun.  It may even mean a return of the Ponds and some time spent in the 40s.

@arbutus @thedentistofdavros @ichabod @puroandson Going back and watching the scene with the painting of Clara in Heaven Sent and then watching the scene in the courtyard in Logolopolis that switches back and forth to the White Watcher I would say both the courtyard itself in Heaven Sent and music in that moment are at least nods to Logolopolis and the White Watcher.

Which makes perfect sense if you think of the themes involved in both episodes.

@ichabod I am so enthralled with his music.  It always amazes me to see how people can transcribe music from a symphony to one instrument.  I’m not a musician, but I am always impressed by people who are.

The one small phrase when the Doctor looked at Clara’s picture sounded cut from old Who.  I also noticed the courtyard in the castle reminded me of the courtyard Tardis garden in the classical Who story Logolopolis.  Just like the music, it gently hinted, but didn’t look just like it.  Just enough little hints and shadows of old Who to make his journey in Heaven Sent feel like it truly represented his whole past.

@arbutus @thedentistofdavros I was also blown away by the soundtrack in Heaven Sent; it was incredibly moving.  For the last few weeks I have been using it for choreography in my classes.

Watching a lot of classic Who you get used to the music and rhythm.  The music from classic Who has a contemplative and “sciency” sound that has a late 70s/early 80s punk sound or a primitive Philip Glass.

On the other hand, Murray Gold is a genius, and there is no doubt that his contributions to New Who are vast, and his music is like a constant companion, improving and heightening every moment.  He is an absolute gift to the show, and he has few contemporaries.  Hearing that little touch of old Who infused with his work really added a sense of continuation and continuity.  Brilliant choice on Gold’s part.

Or maybe it was in my head?  Listen when the Doctor first looks at the painting of Clara.  Let me know what you think.  🙂

@pedant I didn’t believe the rumor, it was my annoyance that people are throwing out names, even silly names, almost all of them female, and seem to be ready to let Capaldi go without a fight.  I adore Capaldi, and he isn’t gone yet, but the way everyone is pretend casting all over the internet, you would think he is.  I find it disrespectful of these bloggers to be burying him before the body is even pronounced dead.

@arbutus I agree, I think the show has done best when they pick an unknown actor.  Matt Smith is a perfect example, HE WAS THE DOCTOR, and no one had even heard of him.  My wish for the show is that Peter Capaldi stays on for another four years at least.  The chemistry between Capaldi and River was brilliant,  I wish they could have a whole season of their adventures together.  The loss of Moffat was hard enough, but Capaldi too?  It’s really too brutal for a fan to face a year without Who followed by the loss of Moffat and Capaldi.  I think the patient fans deserve a few more years of Capaldi.

I need to rant after reading the recent Doctor Who rumor. Emma Watson?

Okay, here it is, I prefer the Doctor as a man. He is best as the instigator, not a creator, as proven by ME/Ashildr and many other attempts. His creations go wrong. He is not a female figure at the core of what continues as his intrinsic qualities throughout each regeneration. The Master made perfect sense; always trying to create, gestate worlds and ideas, for good or bad, usually bad unfortunately. The Doctor is the Yang compliment to the Master’s Ying, and the Master has always been Yin. The Doctor’s positive Yin compliment is River. NO, please don’t change the Doctor’s sex to keep with pop culture and political correctness, it really doesn’t fit in this case.

The Doctor is the archetype of the Yang hero. I feel that since the show is based on regeneration he needs to keep more than his memories each regeneration, but also intrinsic characteristics at the core of his actions. Otherwise, the theory of regeneration loses a lot of validity to me. If he is a sentient being then the Doctor most have a core that is unchanging to a degree. This is why the Master regenerating into Missy makes sense, because his core actions through the show are almost entirely Yin, his good and bad choices. It was changing the paradigm brilliantly.

Same with the Doctor, his choices, good and bad have mostly been through the Yang archetype. Part of his development has been to control his negative Yang tendencies, but I would feel that it is very ineffective to show the success of this inner battle by simply changing him to a female. It’s too easy and gimmicky for me personally.

@janetteb Great list.  🙂   Glad I am not the only one with Robots of Sherwood on my list.  I have also not seen Romans,  mostly because it’s hard to find classic Who on-line.

@dentistofdavros Good idea with the lists, gives all something to do while we wait a whole year for new episodes.  Great list, and I’m glad you listed the 5th Doctor’s episodes, such a wonderful Doctor.  I’m also very partial to the 4th Doctor, if I had a favorite it would come from either the 4th, 11th and 12th Doctor.  I can see why you are partial to the 2nd Doctor, he is very endearing.  I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of someone who actually liked the 8th Doctor’s movie, it really was awful, so no need to apologize here.  Though, still think Paul Mcgann was underutilized.  He is an amazing Doctor, which the mini episode and the audios prove.  I have always blamed extremely bad writing, directing, music and producing on why the Doctor Who movie was a mess.  @winston Winston is right, I think if you see the 8th Doctor in something other than that mess of a movie you will like him.

I wonder though, on the day of his “death” the Doctor was watched over by an almost identical diner, it facilitated the meeting of the people who he trusts the most.  Maybe just watching over? Plus the Doctor is someone she risked her life to save in the Name of the Doctor, she went back for him on Skaro, once again at risk to her own life, plus she strikes me as a character that will look over Danny and the Doctor as long as they live.  She loves rather intensely and she seems the type to just watch over, check on and help, and my guess is throughout his life.

Her mom taught her that you don’t leave, you always go back for the people you care for.  So, maybe?

@thedentistofdavros is right, Doctor Who is so unique and wonderful that each list is so different from each fan.  For example I really enjoyed The Rings of Akhatan and Hide

@arbutus I like your classic Who list, and I also noticed my list included a lot of Moffat, including my favourite episode, Heaven Sent.  In the end Fear Her was too slow for me, but like 42 I am starting to separate the good from the boring and seeing that it had some merit.

There really is something for everyone it would seem.  🙂

It really is heartbreaking.  Like life, “we are all stories in the end” and being human it is always a loss when someone who knew us young and amazing is no longer available to remind us.  That in itself is a huge loss to the self.  Of course the most grievous part is the loss of her closest friend.  It must be a horrible temptation to stay in his life and watch over him like a guardian angel.  I wonder if she left the diner there for 11th on the day at Lake Silencio.  I imagine she keeps feeling the need to save the Doctor, and there is nothing to stop her.

@missy I love that it’s open ended.  It works both ways for me, and I like wondering which is true.  Both knowing and forgetting are bittersweet, and as usual with Moffat, both interpretations hit me in the heart.  Good job with seeing that potential, I didn’t see it until I read it here on the Forum.  🙂

@pedant  I didn’t realise the two authors were so notable until I looked them up,.  Now that I know the authors’ history I am sure you are right.  On the other hand, after having a peer of equal talent proceed, one could almost expect a higher calibre of writers looking to take on the challenge.

@puroandson Yes, I could see why some old fans would be annoyed with the liberties took in the Doctor’s Wife.

Well, you all make good points and it does take some of my fear away that I will never have another visceral episode of Doctor Who in my lifetime after reading the news that the author of 42 took the helm.  42 still bores me, and as a science teacher I could be a troll and go on for days, but it would make me a hypocrite since I forgive Moffat every fanciful inaccuracy.  Of course, as @bluesqueakpip pointed out, Moffat was a f***ing genius, so I forgive all kinds of things I would go postal on if another writer tried it.  The writer’s of a The Doctor’s Wife and Vincent and the Doctor were also incredible, yet the BBC choose the writer of 42, but I will not start a rant, I will just chew on all the positive points made above and hope that Chibnall surprises me with an episode or two that can draw me in.  I honestly have learned to appreciate 42 a little, completely based on all of the comments above.

I forgot about The Doctor’s Wife and The Wedding of River Song and the E-Space Trilogy, I love all three.  Oh dear me, I guess I just like every episode.  (:  Well, no, I don’t really like 42, Fear Her, The Lazarus Experiment, The Long Game, Love and Monsters, The Leisure Hive, and Boom Town, but I can’t say I hate them, I just find them boring.

@thedentistofdavros. Exactly! I agree, one of the things that make Doctor Who so unique and wonderful is how each person connects or enjoys different episodes.  Most shows have the obvious favorite character and episodes, but not Doctor Who.  Everyone in my family has a different Doctor they connect too.

Actually, one of the things I love about the Christmas Specials is how my family members who don’t watch Doctor Who demand we watch the Christmas Specials.  The last five Chistmas episodes have been so “Christmasy” and heart warming.  Another bonus is the kids, teens and grandparents love them, so it has become something that we all can sit down together and watch.  They have become a tradition alongside “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Story.” The adults have claimed “A Christmas Carol” their all-time favorite holiday movie, even with the “I don’t like sci-fi” crowd in my clan, and the kids universally love the “The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe”

I do love the episodes with amazing writing best.  Not big on CGI, effects, monsters or anything like that.  Admittedly, the music makes a difference for me, and also I enjoy the episodes that deal with real history and science.  A little prejudice towards the 4th, 11th and 12th Doctor’s stories, even though I love all the Doctor’s, the three I listed I just adore.

@tardigrade I like that idea!  Ms Ward is still lovely as ever and that would be a wonderful surprise for the fans.  I like it better than my Time Lady regeneration into a ballerina, ha ha.  Plus,  I doubt Sarah Lamb would leave her position as lead dancer for the Royal Ballet for any role in reality.  Of course, if they insisted on a regeneration they are still my first choice.  They do look the part and have a very regal way of moving and standing that would fit Romana.

Also, as I have probably overstated so I apologise to all, I would also like to see a male companion or alien, and River is the only exception to that desire.

@thedentistofdavros It’s hard to pick a favorite episode.  Of course I like Blink and Genesis, but how could someone dislike them?  🙂

@puroandson I almost added Father’s Day for the same positive reasons you gave. I also have to give merit to anything with Harriet Jones, who was one of my favourite characters.  Very close to adding Empty Child/Doctor Dances, but it gets to me too much.  I love parts of it, and the best Captain Jack episode by far, and I love his character, but other parts are haunting and get to my personally.  The very thought of losing a child is too horrific for me to even watch.  It’s my issue with a certain season of Downton Abbey; like the show, but skip over those episodes.  Also skip over the way too good acting of the actress who played Donna in Forest of the Dead when her kids disappear, it actually horrifies me the way she played it.

Obviously I want Romana back, and I think after Hell Bent it could make sense to have her back, but I really don’t want another female companion.  It’s really become very worn out.  I want to see Romana back as a character, but not necessarily a companion.  Why not a boy or alien?  Why always a human girl?  At least Romana is a Time Lord, and not another human.  Maybe Jack?  The only acceptable female human would be River.

I know someone who could play Romana if they ever brought her back.  She’s a ballet dancer and a huge Doctor Who fan and is a really talented actress.  Her performance school tried to get her to go into acting, but she loved ballet too much, but her gift was acting.  I don’t know how to add an image or I would get your approval on the appearance.  (:

Not that the BBC would hire an unknown, but fun to speculate.  Can’t think of a famous actress that would fit.

@pedant OH DEAR GOD!  Fox is considered the propaganda machine by anyone with a mind or heart in the U.S. and this man is the ring leader.  I looked him up and almost threw-up.  The BBC better watch out if they have any of his minions in their mix.  I’m going to be sick.

@ob-wan  Romana is my favorite companion!  Well, if I have a favorite, I actually like them all.  Glad to see another fan!  All of my avatars have had Romana in the photo, except one.  The change is in honor of the BBC’s decision to make us wait a year without even a special.  Why not make a stand alone episode with Paul Mcgann while he is still young?  They never gave the 8th Doctor a decent script.  Give us s glimpse of his time before the War Doctor, a good two part episode getting to know that INFJ Doctor with the soulful eyes and Victorian TARDIS.  It would give Moffat and Capaldi the much deserved break and the Whovians something to look forward to.  Have the person who wrote ‘Vincent and the Doctor’ or “The Doctor’s Wife’ to pen it and use the same awesome team they already have.  Get the director from ‘Heaven Sent’ too.  (:
