    @arch Oh! Now that’s a fun theory to chew on. Davros, interesting – sort of has the same feel as Omega in the vault for me; this feeling the Doctor’s mercy is going to cause him a lot of short term trouble.

    I get what everyone is saying about Clara’s story being done, but her one heart beat away from death having joy rides with the ME/Nightmare/Ashildr is what clearly caused the cracks in time.  The Doctor knew this when he took her out of the isolation chamber, so how unfinished is her story if that is the case?

    Also, all this talk about how the Doctor would be mad at Missy, cause he now knows about her involvement in Clara, or any of that kind of theorising about the Doctor remembering things about Clara has a fundamental flaw – before that kind of theorising takes place we would have to establish he consiously remembers her in the first place.

    I feel it’s a lot more fun to play around with “pie in the sky” theories.

    In the end, probably the Master, but let’s get some crazy theories going before the big reveal.

    @thane15 I think Clara ends up the Dalek in the Cloisters saying “Kill ME” and Ashildr ends up the nightmare child. They are the hybrid in my opinion, and why I think one of them may be in the vault, or it could be the obvious and it’s the Master.

    Kharis @replies

    Clara would make sense, but so would Ashildr.  You all know I believe her to be the Nightmare Child, so it wouldn’t surprise me.  The writers are certainly trying to set it up to be the Master in our minds, I just have a hard time from experience believing it would be that obvious.  I believe Clara ends up trapped in a Dalek in the Cloisters, so I don’t believe her story is at done, or her Nightmare Child partner’s.  Still don’t understand why Ashildr is wearing Clara’s mom clothes in that one screen shot.  Something is undone here, that’s my instinct.

    Episode seemed a little long to me, which usually means I was bored somehow.  Not into this one, more “Meh” than actual dislike.  Was interested in the clues about the vault.  The Master seems to be the obvious answer, but I’m suspicious when it’s aiming to be so obvious.  Clara clearly needed to be contained, but so did Me, Ashildr.

    I’m really enjoying this season.  Loved Capaldi’s Doctor in season 9 and with his new companion I’m enjoying him even more in season 10.

    So far this season is just what I was hoping for.  Wanted more whimsy, more humor, a playful friendship with the companion, and more thought provoking questions and themes, even loving the costumes, scenery and music more.

    This episode had some great lines and great flow. It really dragged me in. (;

    Haven’t had a chance to read through all the comments yet, but enjoyed the first few I read. It’s theater week for my dancers, so busier than usual.

    Why does the pond narrator sound like Colony Sarff?

    @nerys You should listen to the audio stories starring Paul McGann, there is even a set with Alex as River.

    I like an older Doctor personally.  He would rock the part.

    @rorysmith The ship is clearly the one from ‘The Lodger” if you compare the burn marks on the concrete in this episode.  Well, I could be wrong, but water/oil spill lady would explain poor Craig’s rot on his ceiling and wall.

    @arbutus Hello! Also loved the soundtrack. 😊

    @mersey Oh!  I didn’t see that one, I will go look.  You are probably right because the Doctor had a bust of Beethoven in the Tardis in season 9

    Kharis @replies

    @wolfweed @mersey @thane15 Found some articles that highlight the similarities between Shakespeare and Rembrandt. A really great quote form one, “Élie Faure, the French art critic and historian, wrote this of Rembrandt and his work: ‘His humanity is truly formidable, it is fatal like lament, love; change continues, indifferent and dramatic, between all that is born and all that dies. He follows our steps to death in the traces of blood which mark them. He does not pity us, he does not comfort us, because he is with us, because he is us.” http://www.rembrandtpainting.net/rembrandt_painting_1626-35.htm

    Our tarot card progression theme we figured out in episode one of last season (season 9) turned out to be dead on right until the last card “The World” and now I wonder if we haven’t stumbled on another theme arc in the first episode?

    Kharis @replies

    @mudlark Exactly!

    Here are two really random thoughts: Why does the voice in the pond sound like Colony Sarff?  Why is everything centered around a “pond” again?

    Mega random thought: What if Bill is Donna’s daughter (part timelord in the mind possibly) and the promise was to Donna’s Grandpa Wilfred Mott to never erase her memory and to protect her, maybe he actually is her foster dad in that way ?  Maybe she’s named for her grandpa?  Warned you this thought was “mega random” and all.  (;

    Kharis @replies

    @mudlark “His interest in Bill which caused him to summon her to his study and offer to tutor her seems logical.  What teacher worth his or her salt would fail to notice someone who, among all the puzzled frowns, seemed to ‘get it’ and smile.”  Okay, I like your interpretation, but I heard his interest in another way.  I felt the Doctor was interested in her because being confused, having questions, LEARNING made her smile.  It was that she DIDN’T get it and smiled that made him interested.  It’s very ordinary to want to be knowledgeable, because we know as we become knowledgeable we can use it to our ends or advantage.  School has become very degree or career driven, very few go to college these days just for the lovely sensation of being wrong, or learning something new. Would most students today even attend without the promise of a degree or advantage?   I thought he was happy because he found someone happy being present in the journey of knowledge as opposed to the more common destination driven student.   Like knowledge was chips for her mind;  the more she feed her brain, her thirsty curiosity, the more she smiled.

    Just my weird take on things as usual, probably way off.

    I’m really prattling all over the Forum because I’m just so giddy Doctor Who is back on and it looks like it’s going to be a great season.  So many thoughts and theories!

    @redlemons Totally get that.  (:  I have my favorites (4th, 11th and 12th) but I truly adored all the Doctors and actually I’m one of those weirdos that like all the companions, also have my favorites, but in the end I’ve always liked all the characters in the Doctor Who universe.

    #56281
    Kharis @replies

    @mudlark His reasons do seem logical, but wasn’t Nardole saying, “Not supposed to get involved” does this mean just in general, or specifically in a person who’s timeline shows something important to the future.  He seems to know something, but evidence of the photo, but also that he feels the need to teach her “everything” and nothing less.

    @phaseshift I was thinking along the same lines, but more proof that IT IS the same species, or at least  the same group motivated by the same end, is the landing scorch marks match the pattern of the machine in ‘The Lodger’ not to mention the rot in Craig’s wall could easily be explained by weird water creatures, water tools or lures.

    But why was the Doctor recognized as a passenger?  Clearly he doesn’t want to leave for some reason.  The vault?

    @redlemons Welcome! I understand your feelings on Capaldi as the Doctor.  I liked him in the 8th season, but he was not a favorite, partially due to the writing in some of the middle episodes. with the exception of ‘Listen’.  He was making my favorite list after ‘Magician’s Apprentice’ and was on his way to the top by mid-season. It was ‘Heaven Sent’ and the following episode that put him in the #1 spot for me.  ‘The Husbands of River Song’ is why my favorite companion is River, what a duo!  So, for me the ‘The Pilot’just confirmed it for me.  I hate knowing this is his last season, wish he would stay on one more, same with Bill Potts.  I can feel this is going  to be a great season.  (:

    Yes, will see you at the pub, glad your mom has found some new meds, excellent news.

    The music was intense, and extremely well-done as usual.  Murray Gold always inspires me to choreograph.  (:

    Yes, @wolfweed ‘s observations were very keen.  Didn’t Shakespeare say that there were only seven stories in the world?  Not surprised this episode drew from so many famous stories.  I’m already planning to rewatch it again tonight to help keep me awake until my kids are asleep so I can go hide the eggs.  (:

    Thank you @thane15 I enjoyed your review.  (:

    @missy I’m not sure if I can answer if I liked it in general, what I can say is that I appreciated aspects and didn’t like it at the same time.

    Yes, I appreciated the depth of the episode and the “psychotherapy” and the risks it took.  On the other hand, it really did tax my adrenal glands, and I’m aware it was meant to be depressing, and meant to be stressful, I just wasn’t enjoying that much second hand emotion and high levels of cortisol.  Basically (as prosaic as this unfortunately sounds) it was extremely stressful to watch, and even though I can appreciate the brilliance I still hated watching it.  It’s certainly not getting a rewatch of any kind, I got the brilliance, it didn’t confuse me, but that’s the problem: I got it, it didn’t confuse me.  Bottomline, it was stressful, I don’t like to be stressed.  A movie called “Dancer in the Dark” left me in a similar state.  It was an intelligent and extremely well-done movie, it was also heart wrenching, stressful and very visceral.  I don’t like being gutted, my life is stressful enough.

    HELLO!  How are you?  Sorry to hear your mom is doing poorly, sending healing love your family’s way.

    YES!  I heard all of those too, and it really got my head spinning, like when I heard old Who music in ‘Heaven Sent’ or a touch of River in certain episodes.  Always fun to pick out the musical themes.  The music was wonderful as usual and I was really caught up in this episode.

    This was a wonderful intro to season 10.  Adore Bill, but how could a person not adore Bill?  She’s original and absolutely endearing.  Agree with @jimthefish and @nerys that this has a wonderful introduction to a companion and I enjoy the sense of whimsy, humor and wonder infused back into the show.

    @winston @missrori, @mudlark @juniperfish @phaseshift @pedant @miapatrick Agree, agree, agree.

    Peter Capaldi has been my favorite Doctor since season 9 (not feeling it in season 8, plus still loyal to Doctor 11) but this episode reminded me why he is my favorite.

    Moffat could not have done a better job, and a reminder to the haters and whiners about his writing that we are losing an incredible talent and gift to our Doctor Who universe.

    Basically, I loved the episode.  (:

    So who isn’t assuming Bill is related to Clara or River or both?  It occurred to me that the Doctor may know who Bill’s mother happens to be and found those photos to give her, but he may NOT be aware he is in the photo since his memory may have been erased due to her relation to Clara. If confused, read my posts on the ‘Listen’ thread. Just doing my duty as a Forum member and throwing down the crazy theories.  Good to be back.  (:

    My least favorite part was the constant brain hinge, and me wondering why no villain ever just shoots the doctor once the gun is aimed?

    Like @missy my favorite part was the Doctor; I think Peter Capaldi is brilliant.   Also, I really liked Nardole.  (: I think he is a really fun addition.

    It’s not an episode like ‘Silence in the Library’, ‘Heaven Sent’, ‘Husbands of River Song’, ‘Christmas Carol’ or any of the episodes I get so passionate about that I write volumes, but I enjoyed it.  (:

    I agree with @theconsultingdoctor and think the media (as usual) took it out of context.  Naturally, I would love to see Matt Smith return, he brings so much joy, humour, intelligence, whimsy and heart to the show how could I not?  On the other hand, it’s too good to be true, which I never trust, plus I refuse to get my hopes up.  Another problem with this rumor mill is thst I can’t stand all the rumors that Capaldi is leaving, I’m still hoping he stays on for another ten years or so.  Unless the news is “Capaldi signs decade long contract” I don’t want to read it.

    While I am throwing random theories out there, especially concerning Clara, what is going on with the Dalek theme with her?  That Dalek in the Cloisters repeating “Exterminate ME” certainly makes me think it’s Clara warning the Doctor of ME, but that could just be my bored mind impatiently waiting for season 10.

    @ichabod @puroandson @lisa Thank you, it’s been a mess.  My bank is doing a good job going after the group, but still a hassle which drove me to comfort eating and wine, the later being more severe for a ballet dancer and displays the depth of my stress.  The company that stole it has a legitimate looking front, but turns out to be a group that steals credit cards and identity.  They are called “PPL Labs” and are now being investigated.

    Glad you like my River/Tasha Lem/Clara Ravenswood theory.  It was a fun one to play with, still looking for more clues to back it up.  I actually dressed as Tasha Lem for the Doctor Who Ball in San Francisco a few months ago, but when I was researching her costumes I didn’t notice her raven like outfit.  It was not until I watched the ‘Time of the Doctor” back to back with the ‘Husbands of River Song’ that I noticed the raven theme.  The raven theme I noticed from the introduction of Clara, but it was only recently I noticed the River\Tasha tie in.

    Wish I could find comfort in another show like some of you mentioned. Love Sherlock, but as we all know it also has year off also, and in the right mood I enjoy Downton Abbey and Firefly, but both of those are no longer producing new shows.  Outside of the above, I pretty much find everything else too predictable on the tele, or too boring or too annoying to watch.  In a really weird mood I can watch John Oliver, the Daily Show or Big Bang, but that’s a rare mood indeed.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, especially if considering the above list of shows I actually enjoy.

    Just watched this again and I think it is my new favorite episode.  I’m not one to cry watching the tele, but I cried several times.  The whole scene where River is explaining the Doctor is not in-love with her tore me up, it was so well done.  Usually I find relationship scenes trite, predictable and shallow, but everything about their relationship in this episode resonated with true depth and was very visceral. Their final balcony scene did me in.   Love all the wacky humor thrown in, which is what I love about Doctor Who; wise one minute and then silly the next.  Like @puroandson said “light and comedic” then I’m crying my eyes out in the same scene.

    Brilliant episode on every level.

    @ichabod I agree, this the Doctor after the storm, after the crucible, made stronger and wiser.

    I have to admit that this episode and ‘Heaven Sent” have been re-watched in our house an embarrassing amount to admit.
