Re your post http://www.thedoctorwhoforum.com/forums/topic/the-magicians-apprentice/page/4/#post-43154
and using the tank – I love it!
Also liking the idea (also suggested by @bluesqueakpip) that as a result of this that the Daleks will be subtly changed to at least have the capacity for other than blind hatred. Maybe the Doctor picked up on that while he was inside Rusty and fiddling with its memory banks, or when they had the “mind meld”.
21 September 2015 at 22:44 #43176Exterminate!
I think that’s exactly what we’re supposed to think. The clear implication throughout this episode is that the answer to “… but who (Who??) made Davros?” is that it’s the Doctor’s (in)action in abandoning the boy in the minefield that started Davros on his journey to create the Daleks and filled him with his hatred of the Doctor.
Which is precisely why I’m suspicious, LOL! It’s a very Moffaty thing to do to set up a horrific concept to get you thinking about it, then bring it home as something safer. Not to undermine it, but to provide a better resolution in the context of a family show, which is not going to alter the Doctor’s fundamental character. It’s not in the DNA of the show to put the central character on that much of a psychological journey (Look at the problems they ended up with, with the last of the TimeLords thing). The companions change so the Doctor doesn’t have to. I’m thinking for example of the concept of the dead still experiencing what happens to their bodies that was introduced in Dark Water but then shown (probably!) to be a lie in Death in Heaven. But the “what if…?” is still there to be pondered over.
I love 2-parters! 🙂
21 September 2015 at 22:24 #4317321 September 2015 at 22:20 #43172Re the TARDIS being destroyed, my money’s on HADS kicking in. But as far as Missy and Clara are concerned, the Doctor certainly looks convinced that they’ve been zapped. (Although I agree the bracelets do give a potential get-out). It’s still a series of shocking scenes even thought (we think) we know they’ll be back.
Had a watch of Genesis.. again – it’s well worth a look to compare the opening scenes. Especially to compare how far production values have moved on. Everything’s so much more believably grubby this time around. And kudos to the boy playing Davros, thought he was great.
21 September 2015 at 22:10 #43170Re @blenkinsopthebrave‘s comment
Missy’s rather cruel jibe to Clara about Danny: “still dead is he?”. Why put this in?
I agree with @pedant‘s post that it’s there to demonstrate how nasty Missy is. There may be a veneer of being on the Doctor’s side for now, but you can be sure it’s only for precisely as long as it suits her.
I thought the Doctor’s one word comment – “Gravity” – to her was interesting. He knows at that point that they’re not in artificial gravity and he’s making sure that she does too. A clue…?
Thanks to @denvaldron for the Dalek post, great stuff. And you’re right, the Daleks were always light years away from traditional clunky costume-heavy monsters. They were speedy, and also extremely cunning-smart. Love the special weapons dalek (especially how it always looks a bit scruffier than all the other Daleks who presumably have self-cleaning apps). I like how their base in this harks back to the original design with dalek-shaped arched doorways.
I also agree that there’s a jump at the end; is the Doctor replaying the scene in his head? Does he always go back with the Dalek gunstick to save young Davros? Or is it something new as a result of seeing Clara exterminated? In which case he’s apparently going to significantly change timelines.
BUT – what if he always did that? The implication throughout the episode is that the Doctor is so horrified by the prospect that it’s his current incarnation (unknown to all his previous selves) which causes Davros’s horrific injuries and drives him to create the Daleks as hate-filled creatures, that he immediately abandons the child (and sets those events in motion). But what if it wasn’t? What if he does go back to save the boy (presumably going for the hand mines with the Dalek gunstick (which he gets from where…? (There’s a missing piece here, whether he’s remembering or if it’s something he does after the events we’ve seen so far. Daleks don’t give up their guns easily)). What if Davros “remembers” the compassion of a stranger rather than having been abandoned (but goes on to create the Daleks anyway).
And what of the sonic? It’s left with Davros the boy, and he still has it as very old Davros.
Whatever, that last scene of the Doctor shouting “Exterminate!” is as chilling as the boy saying his name at the beginning.
20 September 2015 at 16:54 #43065Oh… 1 more comment – just before Clara gets “exterminated” we are told the Daleks are waiting for her to run. Like cats, they love the chase. And running is such a trademark of the Doctor to get out of trouble. Found myself mentally shouting “DON’T RUN!!”
@bluesqueakpip So are you saying the tank and the noticeable very big gun etc are all just a metaphor…?! 😉
20 September 2015 at 16:47 #43064Before the events of this episode the Doctor didn’t know why Davros was the way he is. The fact that he now thinks he is responsible – whoah! that’s really dark.
@bluesqueakpip deserting young Davros isn’t just cruel, it’s also cowardly. He abandons him to a presumed certain death (by hand mine) to avoid taking responsibility. Which, it would appear, had the unforeseen result of actually creating the circumstances (presumably) where the child becomes the evil creator of the Daleks. Not that seeing him at the end, Dalek gunstick in hand, suggesting that he’s gone back in time to pro-actively kill Davros is any less chilling.
What if he actually rescues the child instead…? Would that avoid the Daleks being created at all?
All the references in previous stories to the Doctor being no better than Davros in that he trains his companions to kill, Rusty saying that the Doctor would make a “very good Dalek”, to Davros in this one commenting on the similarity of their current faces… this is very dark, I love it! (Though I’m sure there’s a get-out – can’t have the Doctor going that much to the dark side. Maybe it’s all an evil plot by Missy)
Also loved the Genesis of the Daleks riffs. in the opening scene, with the soldier and the actual bow and arrow (as referenced by Harry in GotD), the mist, the hand/land mines.
Anyway I’m sure these points have been mentioned by others above, so off for (another!) re-watch, and a catch up on all the comments before posting again.
What a cracking series opener. If the rest of S9 lives up to the expectations set here, it’s going to be possibly the best DW EVER! *does happy yeti dance of joy, scattering glitter on the sofa*
Welcome back to @timeloop btw, missed you. (Although I have to disagree – going on a 3 week bender in 12th century, with a tank and an electric guitar – who wouldn’t, if they could?! (Fell off the sofa laughing at the Pretty Woman riff (now, was that for Missy, or Clara… or both? 😉 )
They make these episodes in 12 days…! That’s incredible. (Though I presume it takes a bit longer in post production, adding the SFX etc)
20 September 2015 at 16:21 #43061Portable CD Player of Rassilon
That is just brilliant. And actually with what we find out about it in The Magician’s Apprentice, maybe not so far off. (Oh… and I definitely want one, haha)
It does look like this scene takes place before the events of TMA, but I agree, it’s highly likely there’s something VERY wibbly wobbly timey wimey going on in this series. Also agree that Capaldi is really beginning to really get his teeth into the role (and we viewers are also getting used to his intepretation of it). For all its beautifully rendered setting, this minisode sparks on a very classically simple 2 actors talking scene. Great to see Ohila back too.
(And well done @lisa 😉 )
20 September 2015 at 16:05 #43059So glad you’ve managed to access the series to watch in real time.
I’ve been pondering the episode titles too. The Magician’s Apprentice is obviously a reference to the Sorceror’s Apprentice and summoning powers or starting things which quickly get out of control. By the end of the episode I still don’t know who’s the Magician and who’s the apprentice. The obvious would be the Magician being the Doctor (or Missy) with the apprentice being Clara. But maybe the Doctor is the apprentice.
The Witch’s Familiar is intriguing. As you say the “familiar” is traditionally embodied as an animal – what about Missy’s line to Clara about her being the puppy. Maybe Missy is the witch and Clara the familiar… or the apprentice. Or maybe it’s a wee nudge to all us apostrophe geeks! An abbreviation of the Witch is familiar ie Missy is behind this all along!
There is incredibly little to work on in the trailer, but that doesn’t usually stop us round here!!
Have to say the scene of the Doctor brandishing a Dalek weapon and shouting “Exterminate” is especially chilling.
Bonkers theory #3295 – the Doctor IS Davros in some very odd timey wimey convoluted loop. After all Davros says in TMA that he “approves” of the Doctor’s new face – as it more closely resembles his own!! All these years he has been fighting his own (very) dark self!!!
😯 👿
19 September 2015 at 12:54 #42934@craig – thanks for the Toby Whithouse Q&A link. I’ve finally managed to catch up with the beginning of Being Human. Really enjoying it.
@blenkinsopthebrave OH NOOOOOS! Hope you can find solution to watching as it goes out. Seconding @Purofilion – we can’t have you not commenting till after Xmas! (and no, reasoned argument isn’t ARSE. I didn’t have a problem with different styles in S8, but understand why some did. Even Capaldi has said in interviews that he doesn’t think he’s nailed it yet (but he’s working hard on it!). I think S9 will be different)
@Everyone
Hope you all thoroughly enjoy Magician’s Apprentice tonight. I really can’t wait to see it again and hear all your thoughts about it (tho it’s going to be tomorrow before I can get back on the boards)
Meanwhile – for a wee bit of timeywimey fun, I leave you with this – a flashback to Glasgow c1978 – to a band called the Dreamboys. Check out the guitarist on the far right 🙂 Apparently Craig Ferguson is on drums but you’ll have to take my word for that! (Keep in mind when you watch tonight!)
16 September 2015 at 23:46 #42759@Purofilion
Haha I feel a LOT like a kid coming up to Christmas, and I’ve already opened 1 of my pressies. Actually it’s more like having had a nibble of the Christmas cake early, or pulling one of the crackers – enough to tantalise but not enough to spoil the excitement. Can’t wait to eat more and then discuss it with you all.
Hahaha… dunno about concise, but thank you.
16 September 2015 at 23:05 #42755@craig – thanks for the Refugee appeal on the front page. That’s a great thing to do
16 September 2015 at 23:05 #42754Hi @spud I think a lot of people here would love to see the Doctor’s granddaughter back (or his daughter for that matter). But I think it’s also highly unlikely, The writers usually prefer to try something new. But as ever with DW, you never know. If someone has a good enough story line, then anything can happen, and anyone can be brought back. (Including the big spoilery return for Xmas that’s been trailed everywhere!)
16 September 2015 at 23:01 #42753Turning summersaults at less than 3 days to go. Woohoo!!! Can’t wait to hear what you all think of The Magician’s Apprentice. Loved the Prelude (and delighted it addressed one of the things we lucky ones who saw the whole episode early discussed as a plot point). If you liked it, I reckon you’ll love TMA. Beyond that, my lips are sealed till Sunday!!
🙂
16 September 2015 at 22:57 #42752Hi folks!
Interesting discussions been going on here (as ever) on the sofa while I’ve been AWOL 😉
Agree with a lot of what’s been said, but I particularly liked @mudlark‘s definition of “art” as
The purpose of art, whether in fiction, painting, sculpture or music, is surely communication
And agree that the critic’s job should be to assess it partly on its own terms – does it do what it sets out to do, does it comply with the rules of its own genre, or more interestingly, does it knowingly break those rules? Also agree with @Purofilion about it being difficult to assess how lasting it will be without a temporal distance. Art can be important without being “high art” if it speaks to and influences other creatives, both its contemporaries and those to come. In modern music for example, a group like the Velvet Underground was relegated to cult status for years until the music re-emerged a couple of decades later as various musicians acknowledged it as a seminal influence.
Art, music and species going into hiding are inevitably changed by the process, but then something new and marvellous might appear as a result. Change, growth, mutation are all inevitable in this universe.
And so back to Doctor Who 😉 It might not be great “art” but it communicates across the decades to many, many people, many of whom identify with the outsider who is at the heart of the show.
28 August 2015 at 20:40 #42089Thanks for thinking about us @janetteb and @bluesqueakpip
Had a great mini-forum meet with @jimthefish, Mrs Fish, @wolfweed and @xad4 and a packed cinema full of Doctor Who fans. Can’t report much from the screening of Magician’s Apprentice (very temporary escape from the stasis cube to post this) – except to say – make sure you don’t miss it on 19 Sep!! It’s EPIC! And fully deserved its big screen outing. Capaldi is brilliant, the effects are great and the plot twists are up to speed. And there’s at least 1 line which which will get all the ARSE fans knickers in a right twist 😉
Have to go… the guards are coming back…
Shhhh! 😉
*VWORP*
26 August 2015 at 18:37 #42068@bluesqueakpip – Don’t feel too badly – we have a week longer to wait for episode 2 haha. And no doubt we’ll have to sign our souls over to (the) Silence on pain of being thrown in the Punishment Dome on Varos or the Sontaran death pits, before we’re allowed near the screen 🙂 Or maybe we’ll just get some cute memory worms to play with on the way out!!
@narvin Greetings, and welcome. You’ll find a lot of Big Finish fans around here, and fair few DW fiends ( mostly harmless tho 🙂 )
26 August 2015 at 14:24 #420656pm at the Filmhouse sounds good to me.
And the Moff… oh my, WOOHOO! (And Brian Minchin too – that’s taking us seriously. I like it)
So see you there. Will you be “in that suit in that bar singing that song, gills flaring, teeth sparkling under the glitterball”?
😈
And @xad4 and any other Forumers who can make it
26 August 2015 at 11:56 #42062@jimthefish It scrambled my little brain somewhat – my visual cortex switched into Who mode, while my ears were expecting Buffy, haha.
Pintage beforehand is probably essential – my anticipation circuits will be on overload by then. Can’t believe it’s TOMORROW!!! ONE MORE SLEEP 🙂 (*SSSSHHHH!! Looks round guiltily at being one of the lucky ones with the golden ticket!* )
Filmhouse has a decent sized bar, which is most likely going to be full of a mix of overexcited Whovians, would-be cynical (but secretly excited) meeja folks and a couple of lost Fringe-types. So probably the place to be 🙂 What time are you heading over? Starts at 8.30 (but I presume the seating is unreserved)
26 August 2015 at 11:45 #42061Good comment. And I agree he is
a hero that appeals to the marginal, the awkward, the loner (and the lonely)
He’s the frequently gauche, socially awkward hero who solves problems with brain not brawn.
But I do feel the need to be pedantic. You say:
to almost revel in your lack of ties
Right back to Hartnell, the Doctor has always been rather partial to a tie! Just not a conventional one 😉 Often a bow tie, frequently a cravat and on occasion a full blown scarf (an overgrown tie IMHO).
26 August 2015 at 11:20 #42058Not sure where to post this, but it seems like a sofa-ish item.
Apologies if it’s already been posted elsewhere, but just came across it and thought of @bluesqueakpip @jimthefish @Purofilion @pedant in particular 😉
26 August 2015 at 11:15 #42057Lots of interesting speculations… I really hope Capaldi hangs around for a good while longer. Not against change, but the current team still seems to be firing on all cylinders as well as bringing in new blood to keep it fresh.
@Purofilion – Congrats on the cyber-anniversary. Hope you have a great day (filmed or otherwise, LOL)
@craig Thanks for the AL Kennedy article. (Also for the design tweak showing people’s @ handles – that helps a lot)
22 July 2015 at 13:15 #41351Accommodation in Edinburgh’s always a bit pricey, many times worse during August when there’s several festivals happening all at once, all over town. But you should still be able to pick up something OK for around £50-60/room/night for single, en suite with breakfast, pay later option, if you book very soon! Anything within a mile radius of the Filmhouse (Lothian Road, 5 mins from Prince St west end) should be OK for area and getting about. You don’t want to be outwith walking distance – traffic’s a nightmare 🙂
Try booking.com, they’re usually good (or whatever your preferred accom booking site is). Best of luck.
22 July 2015 at 10:25 #41347@jimthefish YAY!! Me too 🙂 🙂 🙂
Only downside is we then have to wait FOUR weeks till episode 2!!
See you on 27th Aug. (Fingers x’d for Moff for the Q&A)
21 July 2015 at 23:10 #41332Late night viewing for the sofa.
A gently quirky little video, going back to 1992 – Reverse the Polarity – a diary piece documenting a day in the life of Jon Pertwee as he does some promotion for the new VHS (VHS!!!) video release of ‘Doctor Who: The Pertwee Years.’ Lots of interviews with the very charming JP, with his thoughts about his time as the Doctor (and other things); cut in with some tributes and memories from fans and Richard Franklin (who played Mike Yates during Jon’s tenure as the doctor), those bits recorded in Brighton (1999).
Just been dusted off and put on line very recently for fans’ enjoyment apparently.
21 July 2015 at 22:39 #41330Deep bow to @jimthefish aka JumtheFosh 🙂 Thankee kindly sir!
You are spot on re it being part of the TV Fest. They did the same thing last year for Deep Breath (and I think Moffat was one of the guests then). Couldn’t make it last year but I’m definitely having a shot at getting tickets for this one. Let me know you get on.
I notice it’s a regulation 45 mins, so no extra length this time. Although it’s a 2 parter I think so I’ll let them off. (Very happy to see a few of those in S9 schedules). It seems like it’s been such a loooong wait this year *sigh*
Haha ARSEness is never far away 🙂
21 July 2015 at 22:10 #41328So is it genuinely fluid and unremarkable? Or is it, in Gallifreyan society, something a bit eccentric? Or is it like the Tennant Doctor regenerating into the apparently-twelve-years-old Smith Doctor – one of those slightly embarrassing regeneration accidents?
That had me ROFL-ing off the couch 🙂
It’s remarkably on-trend* and topical of the show – almost as if it had access to time travel in real time, LOL
*use of on-trend slang to demonstrate just how on-trend I am!! (Yeah, right!! 😉 )
21 July 2015 at 21:54 #41327@JimtheFosh
Given A L Kennedy’s longstanding professed love of Dr Who I don’t think you could accuse her of cashing in. (OK I’m a bit biased, I agree would love to see her getting a shot by the Moff)
21 July 2015 at 21:51 #41326And thanks to everyone who’s been keeping the news entries up to date… ish 😉
Particular shoutouts to @fatmaninabox (mostly because of the FABULOUS new horticultural look to your box), @phaseshift and @lisa
And… @craig – a new trailer to discuss did you say? Wooohooo!
😀
21 July 2015 at 21:45 #41324Attention all DW fans in the Edinburgh area on Thurs 27 Aug.
The Filmhouse is screening the first episode of Series 9 nearly 3 weeks ahead of TV broadcast!!! (Or am I wrong in thinking DW-Day is 19 Sep..?)
Set your alarm clocks for 10am, 21 July to get your tickets. (It’s not a big cinema so repeat dial could be necessary)
http://www.filmhousecinema.com/showing/doctor-who-the-magicians-apprentice-aug15/
Ooooh…. my fur is all aquiver *looks round guiltily in case mods spot the stray spots of glitter cascading on to the couch!* 😳
CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!
@wolfweed (Woolfweeeeeed!!! yay) @jimthefish (lovin the new Angry Salmond look, LOL) @barbaralefty… (We could make a Forum convention of it 🙂 )
8 June 2015 at 07:42 #40559Yay!
*rolls around in rose petals” (thanks @fatmaninabox ) Wheeee!!
Just came across this, and it fair made me chuckle. Dunno if it has any smidgeon of truth in it, but it’s very funny anyway!
Why you should never, ever drunk text a Doctor Who fan!!
http://www.tickld.com/x/why-you-should-never-drunk-text-a-doctor-who-fa
4 June 2015 at 12:27 #40505@jimthefish Thanks for posting the Doctor Who Festival info, I just got an email alert about it, but you beat me to it 🙂
I presume tickets won’t go quite as fast as they did for the last Excel event for the 50th, but I’d suggest that anyone wanting to go shouldn’t hang around before trying to bookl! Hopefully the phone and email lines will be able ot cope better this time. I remember a day of repeat dial, followed by crashed phone line before I could finish booking 🙁
13-15 Nov, Excel, London
4 June 2015 at 12:19 #40504Belated hi back to @jimthefish (and thanks for the making of Firefly video post) and @janetteb (and sympathies, the earth is indeed equally benighted where you are). Proper congrats to @fatmaninabox – you clever boy you! Have a whole Medusa cascade of gold stars 😉
@Purofilion – hope you’re well on the mend now, even if it cuts into your DVD viewing time
18 May 2015 at 09:19 #40165Just dropping back in to say a quick hello to everyone.
Thanks to all those, inc @fatmaninabox, @Purofilion who sustained me in the darkness (and post 7 May in UK that’s a very creepy, evil, dark indeed) of alternate reality (aka Real Life) by keeping my memory alive in this place.
😀
18 May 2015 at 09:09 #40164They two different limbs of one wonderful tree, oak I think
Nice one.
BG Who was of its time and (as many others have pointed out, here and elsewhere), for all its faults, it was often (note that I’m not saying always!) cutting edge in terms of concept and attempts to make the special effects match the creative ideas the writers came up with. TV itself was also just a small child in the 60s, it was still learning how to tell stories in a different way from stage or film. Likewise the actors, many of whom had a stage acting background.
It didn’t always work, but then, as now, it was because it reached for the stars that it sometimes achieved escape velocity in wonderful ways that challenged and delighted.
As I’ve said elsewhere, I really enjoyed series 8, not least for its ambition in not being content to retread the successes of previous sereis and had the audacity to completely change the pace and to question and redefine who the Doctor is. I’ve enjoyed it even more on rewatching, with more of an appreciation of the subtleties of Capaldi’s performance and the nuances, tightness and details of the writing.
18 May 2015 at 08:57 #40163LOTS of discussion on here since I last logged in, but glad to see that civility and mutual respect is generally holding up.
I agree with those who’ve said that for the Master, Missy (and her sexuality) is just another way for him/her to explore being in control. Control has always been a defining charateristic of the character. The Master is a classic psychopath. It’s all about manipulating others to do what he wants. It’s not even about the end result, it’s the process. Death in Heaven is a classic example of that. Missy is happy to have spent eons setting up the situation where she can watch the Doctor squirm as he realises he’s done everything as she planned.
As to whether the Doctor and the Master are brothers, half brothers or even related at all – if it’s not on the screen it’s conjecture. It doesn’t matter what Pertwee or Delgado (or anyone else) may have said offscreen, to date their mutual early history is unclear and their actual relationship is only hinted at. It’s up to us to project on to those hints whatever theories we want. But we need to remember they are only theories, and my thoughts are as valid as anyone else’s. And equally invalid if the current writers chose to come up with something else… and write it into a story.
That’s where the fun comes from. There’s no need to get annoyed – just enjoy the journey! And be prepared to throw your pet thoeries on to the large pile of “ideas we came up with that we loved but have now been contradicted by what’s actually been written”
As for the possibility of Osgood or any other character being brought back (and I’m still holding out for a River Song return at some point!) – it’s a show that has time travel at its core – more so in AG Who than at any time in its history – so why not? It doesn’t invalidate the shock and sadness of hear death to meet her again at some earlier point in her timeline (so long as she isn’t killed in the earlier timeline).
3 April 2015 at 10:27 #39409Thanks @jimthefish
All that love-bombing and ‘family of nations’ pish doesn’t seem to be quite so funny or heartfelt now apparently…
Quite agree, but at least there’s an awareness that there’s a population at the north end of the UK. Poor Wales hardly merits a mention and NI gets ignored completely! Good debate last night, did you catch it? Female “new guard” seems to have stirred it up, male “old guard” trotting out the same old same old. And Farage looked in need of some (far) Right Guard!
😀
3 April 2015 at 09:41 #39408Happy Easter everyone from the Doctor Who team.
This made me smile. A lot! Creepy Easter bunny 🙂
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02n9kt1 (message from CapDoc)
1 April 2015 at 08:33 #39380Just spent far too much time in the pub for the middle of the week, but such a joy to catch up with everyone’s recent contributions. Thank you all so much; I’ve missed being in here recently, some great conversations and memories shared. So many places and ages and experiences and yet we come together happily in this little corner of the cyberverse. Thanks to a crazy 50 year old TV show. Wasn’t like this in my young day, haha!
Thanks to @tenthdoctorftw (I liked your comment about the first series of AG Who being “British” whereas the later ones seem more international), @lisa (thanks for the links 🙂 ) @purofilion (please keep rambling on!), @arbutus @bluesqueakpip @ichabod @barbaralefty (thanks for your post, and completely seconded) @craig, in particular, and apologies if I’ve missed anyone out! (And thinking about absent friends @phaseshift @wolfweed and @juniperfish – hope RL will let you come back and haunt these boards again soon, we miss you)
@pedant – just saying – for someone who cultivates such a snarky persona, you have a very soft underbelly! Your “ghosts” video really got me – so beautiful. Thank you for sharing, and hope things get better for you soon. It’s a cliche about time making it better, or at least bearable, but it does, albeit slowly. You’re wrong about the thing you keep for years “in case it comes in useful” though – yes you keep it all that time, and then chuck it out. Give it a couple of weeks and you’ll suddenly be doing something and thinking – if only I had a… Doh! (But it only happens once it’s gone! 🙂 )
Cheers everyone.
31 March 2015 at 23:43 #3936331 March 2015 at 23:41 #39362@arbutus @Purofilion
And we in the UK always had “oh well, there’s always the colonies if things get too bad here. They do things better in Oz and Canada” Get it sorted guys!!
*sigh*
Meanwhile we have possibly the most hard to call ever general election coming up. The Queen dissolved parliament this week (which actually sounds about best thing she could have done with it – about 5 years overdue 😈 ). And British summertime officially arrived. With subzero temperatures, hailstones, gales and cancelled ferries all along the west coast of Scotland. (Swap you some of our cold, for a wee bit of your heat Puro?)
Cheers!
*hic*
31 March 2015 at 23:14 #39359@Purofilion
Nah, not the Doctor… but I do have an intergalactic, Cloven Hoof Taxi-cab!
😀
(and slainthe back to @arbutus 😉 )
31 March 2015 at 23:10 #39358I’m with you on OHMS but in many ways it’s the anomaly n the series till Craig came along. I loved Connery’s Bond – it was dryly tongue in cheek enough, and it was of its time – gadgets, sharp suits, fast cars. But there’s a limit to how long you can sustain that in a series before you need some character development, otherwise it becomes a self-parody.
@arbutus – adding my voice to those saying to go and check out Buffy. (I saw a couple of S1 and quite liked it, but didn’t see enough to get it. Caught up with it properly part way through S2 and got hooked). Great for all the reasons that have been discussed at length on this board (and the last one, haha).
Education -should be seen as an investment in any country’s future, but very few countries even begin to even understand the term. Mostly it’s about teaching what can be measured, to get to specific outcomes. Interestingly I was reading an article about Finland this week (whose education system seems to buck the usual trends (eg formal education doesn’t start till age 7) and who are proposing a radical reform which does away with the usual “subjects” in favour of a more holistic multi-disciplinary topic-led approach rather than artificially separations.
31 March 2015 at 22:54 #39357Thanks so much for reminding me of Our Friends in the North, that was a great series (with of course a certain Mr Eccleston as well as Craig).
@purofilion I get that a lot of people didn’t like Broadchurch II, and I understand why. For me it was all about the reactions of people to the situation rather than being a whodunnit per se. It was about examining what happens to a community first when there is the awful crime of child murder and then when it’s understood that it was indeed one of their own who committed it – but that in fact could have been any one them in the dock (not because they were necessarily capable of it, but because circumstances could be contrived to make a case against them that would convince their neighbours that they were). Suspicion and division destroying what had been the illusion of a community. I liked the slow pacing of it, and as I’ve said before, they often got the small details right – the little pebble that causes many ripples in the pond.
But I also understand it waasn’t to everyone’s taste, especially #II

Problem solved (and there’s a whole box in the corner if anyone else wants to join in; it’s a seriously large glass!)

intergalactic, Cloven Hoof Taxi-cab.
that sounds a bit ominous but definitely useful . Cheers!
31 March 2015 at 22:23 #39348Working thro the recent discussions backwards, so will start with a cocktail. Since we are in the pub 🙂
@Purofilion – joining me? (It’s quite a large glass, I’m sure we can share 😉 )
31 March 2015 at 22:15 #39346So true
31 March 2015 at 21:33 #39341Woah… am I behind or what??
Missed our Emperor’s birthday – hangs head in shame and expects to get exterminated on the spot! Belated happies to @craig ( 😆 at “the 45” – that’s brilliant)
Some absolutely brilliant songs of the day from everyone – @lisa, @fatmaninabox, @jimthefish @arbutus – lots of faves in there, thank you all. And thanks to @arbutus and @Purofilion for the John Renbourn songs – yet another one gone too soon – far too many of them this year.
OK, I’m joining the game late – but here’s a song for Tuesday. Jagger/Richards composition, and it was done by the Stones, but Melanie Safka’s version knocks spots off their version (IMHO 🙂 )
31 March 2015 at 21:16 #39340YAY!!
Glitter!!! 🙂
Thanks @juniperfish for added sparkle.
*looks round cautiously for grumpy @fatmaninabox, hehe*
I think Capaldi would be great in a thriller-spy style Who story – I’d love it if they filmed one episode in black-and-white for some spurious time travel reason or another – it would look great!
Great idea, and wouldn’t he just!
22 March 2015 at 19:02 #39104@thekrynoidman Good to hear you like it, always interesting to know what younger fans make of the old stuff.
And agree with the various posters that #3 is the weakest episode – the downside to multi-part stories, especially the 6-parters. Mostly this rattles along nicely. Troughton is great (and thanks @craig for @htpbdet‘s old avatar as the ID for this page. 😥 ), it’s a good story – yes, very James Bond/Avengers but with a Doctory twist. Agree with @juniperfish‘s earlier comment (and @arbutus‘s) would be nice to see a political thriller type story in AG Who, where the real enemies are the humans.
The tech developments are funny – complicated disaster-causing tech, presumably complicated set-up underground for air, water etc and what looks like computers… but no mobile phones, basic tracking devices etc. Maybe the “find a phone box” comment is also a wink to the audience 😉
Astrid does well though, she’s fast on her feet, obviously bright and capable of taking the intiative.
