it’s interesting how Carol Of The Bells, a Ukrainian composed new year song,is based on an older tune & with modern lyrics added during WW 1. It’s also both in 3/4 and 6/8. So it’s polyrhythmic qualities are up to the arranger, composer or listener – as to what _time_ or beat the tune is in… which, considering this is Doctor Who, is intriguing.

(Despite career in music I didn’t spend any time looking at Western polyrhythmic music -rather, the ethnomusicological equivalent of ….Malaysian rhythms…. Unhelpful 🙂  )

I’m liking the idea that Susan Twist could be just a RTD joke… And, “There’s always a twist” can be laid, with some difficulty, over the rhythmic motif of Carol of The Hells ….bells….

yes! I also think it’s an altered reality. I was rewatching Church on RR  & saw STRIAD (Tardis) -I’ve been slow on that front. Also an early episode actually mentioned the doctor’s granddaughter which I don’t think has happened in decades?

But on the issue of an altered dimension and one where the Pantheon are mentioned, where snowflakes are formed from Ruby’s tears, coupled with Tennant’s unease regarding calling into the universe, a myth or superstition AND Unit admitting that supernatural elements take up a fair amount of time, “now,” all points towards an altered reality….

Even Ruby taken to a planet, where the SAME shot appears- remembering Ecceleston’s 2nd episode (and the names? Ruby/Rose)- standing in front of the ship’s screen at the same time as the Doctor has “soniced” her phone so she can call her mum…All very similar.

*Then* we meet Rogue -and wasn’t Capt Jack a rogue? Yet this most recent episode feels a lot like Girl in the Fireplace too….

Even dealing with one lone bomb big enough to explode the planet is reminiscent of Eccesltone’s episode, Dalek…. It’s interesting how Rose begs the Doctor to let her see her dad (Father’s Day) but here the Doctor explains clearly why Ruby can’t ever go back to the Church on RR..

and is Mrs Flood a baddie? She didn’t  want to speak to the scary “staring” lady in 73 Yards when everyone else dismissed this as “not a problem.”  Mrs Flood made it clear it was certainly no problem of hers.
@juniperfish this episode dealt with loss beautifully. And yes, those lines delivered with Rogue’s liquid eyes were a jab to the heart: “at the end of that day I lost them.” It IS demonstrative of loss: “It’s always sudden.”

seems to me that the Doctor has been “gifted” a perfect BFF who is clever, kind, helpful, and has a secret which the Doctor enjoys solving…. I wonder whether one of the Pantheon have decreed all of this for the Doctor…. But it doesn’t explain Mrs Flood yet, nor what you clever people all noticed, which is the Doctor crying but not knowing he is….?

As you say, & others too, that AI is a big thing this ‘season’ (1) and certainly Dot & Bubble were a large clue in that direction -or better yet an example, rather than clue.

(1) I also feel short changed with only 8 episodes. 🙁 Mind you everybody [Apple etc]  has 8 episode runs but with something so pregnant with sci fi philosophies and Who narratives, it tends to feel a tad thin now…The Moffat years were deliciously chunky and filling.

They all DO look odd- as if a mirror has been shifted so that their chins look more pronounced, or at least the bottom of their faces…?

I thought it could be R.E.G. too… but the forehead is odd. And also why? Unless this is the ‘reveal?’
I recently rewatched The Snowmen aaand I think they’re monsters produced from the child’s memory (that is, the GI as a child) with the snow mimicking him and then melting due to Clara’s tears. I think those stories are tidied away…. But the GI could return and so could the ….one rhyming with barnyard…. 🙂

Absolutely agree with the idea that many young ones aren’t as attached to social media as many others assume.

Just from our perspective only, The Son and many of his mates have virtually no socials with most working 2 jobs & at university/college. There is less time, less disposable income and as @janetteb might attest to, rent & food in Aus is cripplingly expensive.

Certainly the racial component also described by RTD as the most significant issue in the episode & the “step away before you’re contaminated (by the chap putting himself forward as leader)” was the most cold and despairing statement in any episode this season

@ps1I0v3y0u Yes! The undercurrent denying racism is evident. But then those squawking about how the series is horrendous are doing the typical thing…. No discussions as to why or how…  🙂

@janetteb @brewski yes, the initials…the names…..WHO is Ruby? I remember Season 6 & 7 with Matt Smith & Dorian’s “question hiding in plain….the question to end all questions…” etc. Doctor WHO?

nice to have these asked about the companion: we had this with Donna as the most “important” person in the RTD-verse.

@juniperfish I also had problems with Oppenheimer as did The Son. We both found Barbie to be watchable.  The fairytale motifs with 3 stooky babbies & the significance of both 3 & myths/fables is intriguing & with perplexing ambiguity!

interesting how archetypes & universal principles or forces impel & permeate the psyche across time/culture. This is one of the beats across this season whether Gremlins at Christmas; creatures at the end of the universe or the Giggle. The immortals (seen in TDC) described by Aristotle as “indwelling forms” or in Wittgenstein as “linguistic family resemblances linking disparate but overlapping particulars” are part of archetypal traditions described in many ways, with creative & diverse contexts.

Interesting. To all those recalling the Scan the Doctor does I’d forgotten this.

I’m remembering how safe the companion is often not; and how promises are broken. I’m reminded of The God Complex where the Doctor says to both young and current Amy: “I knew this would happen. I can’t save you and there is nothing I can do to stop this….I’ve led you by the hand to your death. This is what ALWAYS happens. I took you with me because I wanted to be adored. I’m not a hero. I’m just a mad man in a box. It’s time we saw each other as we really are.” The loss of her faith is a stunning realisation and in a way we’ve returned to this.

It’s time to stop waiting.

@mudlark Dark is definitely worth a watch: the key to it all is a fabulous character based study where crossing timelines (not necessarily the most important part of the drama) creates a stunning backdrop for the story.

I’m pretty sure -& no spoilers here- one of the female characters is her own mother…. There’re a few instances of  timey whimey plot points – though not repeated exactly.

Goodness, I echo others in wishing you a quick recovery: my husband had a heart attack approximately 6 weeks ago but thanks to one of the best Australian cardiac units located a mere 5 minutes away, he was home within 5 days. This isn’t often the case & it was definitely nerve inducing but I believe he also took advantage of the free wi-fi,  essential in these situations.

You’ll have plenty of insane bonkerising on these threads to keep you sufficiently distracted interspersed with fantasies of appetising & colourful meals you can happily chomp on once home -hospital food generally soft & flavourless.

I’m now wondering about Ruby’s origin story & if indeed she’s her own mother? I’m reminded of a friend who recently introduced me to the wonderful 1980 film, The Flipside of Dominick Hide & its sequel, Another Flip for Dominick …..starring a young, lithe, Peter Firth, later a main character in Spooks.

I remember my first ever post on this forum many years ago writing of my love of Old Who -dirty, dilapidated corridors, rain & wind, quarries… and a general tremble of dis-ease as occasionally, on a different planet, or a different earth – nothing seemed quite right…. This episode held that and more for me. And Sian Phillips, all of 91! (I Claudius).

Still, great to see a completely different episode in this season: more dialogue and less shouty shouty..And I love a callback.

I think we’ve had excellent responses covering points as to why it’s acceptable -if not necessary – to consider a non-white Newton.

The argument, that an actual famous person shouldn’t be black or brown because he’s an actual white guy, folks, neatly summarises our problem: in 1666 how many non-White guys or gals with sufficient familial prosperity confidently marched into Cambridge in 1665 to pen a discovery of fluxions?

To me, it’s interesting WHY Davies chose Newton…. The issue of colour is as interesting as Mavity, perhaps ….wherein he investigated the nature of sunlight refracting thru prisms, leading to a conclusion that different colour rays of light must also differ in refrangibility.

I hadn’t heard of The Meep but really enjoyed that episode. However, *this* episode was on another level of happy terror & addresses my own nightmare since childhood: a large hand connected to an enormous long arm, sweeping out from under the bed to grab my ankle…..

I think that the undercutting of the message in Local Hero, is part of the message. At least to me.

I think there were no larger messages in Doctor 13 than other historical series. There were fascinating moral quandaries in The War Games, from memory.

The very first serial examining the Thals, & the subsequent anti-war & anti-pacifist stance (confusing) then reminds me of The Brigadier’s horrendous choice in Dr Who and The Silurians -with a similar undertone in Chibnall’s Hungry Earth. Then I think of the Curse of Peladon & its ‘unique’ set of messages.

Aaand then there’s Inferno…. also laden with messages about protecting earth’s natural resources & the horror of …rubbish dumps… 😀

I think we can agree that climate activism in stories is important but that sledgehammers are tricky devices to be used occasionally. Perhaps we felt flattened once too many times?

in the end I did love Doc13. She had a passion I engaged with & behind the rapid fire talk, or the lack of existential debate, there was sadness behind the eyes as if she was running from something.

The Doctor does evolve & change to some extent, but doesn’t grow or have permanent relationships: they don’t want the way humans want or need? It reminds me, actually, of how to describe the ensouled Angel in the Buffyverse as he can’t grow or feel the sting of human hunger or sense time passing in the way humans do, thus his conscience (& so the Doctor’s) is affected differently.

If the currency of life is time, then how much we have of it & how we use it, is a gift. The Doctor & Angel have plenty of it so throw themselves into helping others -into persuading them to recognise their time is short so they must protect & manage their homes, their planets, & systems.

Effectively they often recognise they have to make that event or choice happen or at least narrow the choices before a devastating event occurs <i>- </i>by throwing themselves at it -like the sledgehammer.

The stories need a certain delicacy but that’s not always possible: we’re not learning from the consequences of our decisions & the Doctor and her companions are frustrated by this, hence the style in which these stories are told.

I think Local Hero is a gem, isn’t it? Definitely, as you say, a fresh faced Peter Capaldi adding to the film’s quirkiness & as for “hero,” I think one could debate for hours as to his/their identity,  when, yes, Janette, it’s the town, even Happer & Mac, who’s faced with the contrasting, hectic lifestyle of his own city when the job’s complete.

The messages are pretty infused throughout the entire film, I would think: over reliance upon oil, the concept of community & the death of, community elders themselves and their own ancestry (& the significance of their stories), the “everyman executive” & the loss of individualism within corporate empires or entities: but it’s been awhile since I’ve seen the film!

Hallooo! It’s the elder Syzygy reportin’ in. I’d thought I’d head to the new Sofa.

yes, it was certainly a freak storm: not surprising in Brisbane at this time of year but certainly the worst in this suburb we’ve seen for quite awhile with respect to the amount of rain,  hail & wind causing furniture & cars to be pushed about. Thane mentioned the weather warnings, which, again, were poor & far too late: not unusual in itself.

Also not a surprise that people were dashing past on the nearby streets, failing to pull over so there were the typical accidents as well as those who believe “I can take this storm! My car will handle it easily…”  🙄

also, yes, the storms in NZ were all over the news in separate countries. Glad you were OK.
I recognise Thane mentioned @winston & possibly @blenkinsopthebrave regarding any previous storms and winter rain in Canada but that was on the Spoiler thread. Hoping you’re alright & doing well.

It is a weird episode though. It’s not one of my favourites but I persisted probably because I loved Amy even more than Clara and the Queen is brilliant as well. I think it’s probably supposed to be farcical comedy.

@dentarthurdent A Killer Zombie! That sounds pretty scary. We’re glad you weren’t ….scathed… well, it still happened but not quite what you were expecting.

Today, we were sleeping and this enormous explosive howl sounded, with a huge racket like the roof blowing off and it was a terrible thunderstorm. In all the years in this house dad was saying we had never experienced such a white-out, with winds, HUGE hail & massive rain so you couldn’t see more than an inch out of the window at one point.

When it cleared so you could see, chairs  were blowing down the street! Someone’s car floated gently past us. It was in slow motion. It’s funny how our brains stopped working. We were staring, slack jawed, not saying a word (though the wind would’ve stopped us hearing anything else) as this chaos swarmed around the house.

Mum thought the roof would blow off and the windows smash, so she closed shutters & curtains (to stop crashing glass) & then we all got ahold of our minds, checked the power, grabbed matches, torches & towels. Once we got organised, it stopped.

I looked on the Apple Weather App for our area, and it said “possible showers.” 😆😆

The empty pond now has at least 8cm in it. Water in torrents continues to flush down our steep driveway, and a friend’s house looked like Catermole’s job at the ministry of magic, where the baddie says to Ron Weasley, “it’s been raining in my officer for 2 days! Fix it.” Mum’s friend couldn’t believe the water pouring through his ceiling onto his new wood floors, furniture and bedding. So, we were lucky. We didn’t even have a car fall on our heads!

I hope you didn’t need stitches. I know how painful and irritating they can be. And
@winston we are wishing you all the best too. @janetteb mum was checking in with you as the heat in S.A. can be pretty awful in February. I was only there in December and it was nice: not like the humidity we have, for instance.

thx so much for reaching out about your Chibnall experience. I can get on board with a lot of that. I still look fondly at the poster of Matt Smith’s Doctor on my wall and remember the visit to the Sydney Opera House where we had Alex Kingston and Ben, the composer (?) with daleks, cyberdudes, and others along with all the music. I think I was 10.

My favourite was Smith and Peter Capaldi’s Doctors as well as the clues along with spectacular stories. I loved that NY special you talked about too. I was able to rewatch that many times, and with Flux I thought the assistants or companions moved on a lot?

It used to be, even from Clara, “where is the Doctor? Doctor help us” when the female companion to Jodi actually had her own jobs, didn’t wait for the Doctor’s instructions, and the old companions from the 80s, tended to be active investigators as well. I didn’t know any of those characters, myself from the 70s/80s.

I’m not sure whether it’s just me, but I found the whole Irish Guarda story a little confusing, in that I couldn’t work out whether the tale was about how the policemen (who didn’t die or age)  were actually protective of the Doctor, or were TLs in themselves, or part of a secret anti-TL sect?

I suppose another problem I had with any of the stories from ‘06 on, was the ramping up of disasters such as the earth vanishing, the 2 split universes separating Rose & David leading to a reality bomb, to losing all the planets, to the End of Time itself & then last year to entire universes being destroyed.  What else can they do….How far can they go?

I liked the character development in many earlier seasons but I thought the female   Companion was well developed last year: I don’t recall her name. I’ve seen these eps only once whereas Mum liked them a lot more and was moved to tears by the end and that’s her litmus test -if it really moves her then it’s a big tick.

The way Whitaker left definitely caused more than a dry eye there but I didn’t experience this & neither did Dad who gave it all up pretty quickly. I think he thought the Flux stories could be 10 episodes but he mentioned the insane amount of money the BBC pays for Doctor Who so it’s hard to find a balanced equation.

I liked the Master a lot initially (in the Australian outback scenes) but he became so insanely mad by the end that the character and the stories intertwined were again ofer-amped. Maybe that’s how it’s supposed to play out, though.

I like Morricone too. And Lord of The Rings: but once was enough for me.
I’ve realised it’s not War and Peace but Crime and Punishment! I can’t even correctly remember the titles of the books I’m supposed to be reading. 🙄🙄 😆

welcome to the forum. I’m in my early 20s & recognise Blink182 & Lock Stock etc. Like @dentarthurdent I also know Fleetwood Mac & Dire Straits though I’m pretty sure most of my friends wouldn’t have a clue. I don’t know what lapfox trax, breakcore or speedcore is! I think emo was connected to the scene kids of the ‘10s which I basically kept away from.

😆😆That makes me feel really old: I should recognise those bands or shows.

Mum finally convinced me to watch I Claudius, & in addition to reading Virgil & Homer plus some War and Peace (!) I’ll be doing that pretty much all year.

I recently read a small book about mapping and clocks called Longitude (a seminal work, I’m told, in its description of how the first seafarers went about examining how time works- very Doctor Who) as well as John Ralston Saul’s Globalism as an introduction to how people view economics.

@doctorines welcome to this forum too. I’m at uni but as my semester doesn’t start yet & my part time job chopped back my hours I have time on my hands so caught up on recent Doctor Who & other things (cleaning my room was one of them- not exactly inspiring).

I read the Twitter accounts & one guy stated he thought the floor was very big and everything so minimalist that it looked a bit like a laptop in the middle of an empty warehouse. Not sure who posted that on Twitter but it’s an interesting observation….

we all liked the Capaldi and Tennant interiors as well. But I enjoy the messy quality of the after Gap Tardis’. A bit like I imagine space travel & ships would be in the future. things cobbled together, and technicians trying to fix things on the fly….

this reminds me a lot of the first Tardis.

@janetteb you stated, I reckon last year, that you didn’t have faith anymore in Chibnall’s writing. Could you elaborate on that all?

Then again, in Brisbane, it’s not uncommon for swimming pools to be 30C & the beach, a gooey 28C (whilst the air temp is 30C & humidity in the high 90s).

This is when I start missing holidays in the UK, & even living in South Australia where the water, at least coming out of the cold tap, IS cold. Generally, the hose water here, even at 10 pm, is about 31C . Ick and yurrgh!

On programmes, I was looking at Disney & prompted by a mate, saw the works of RTD. I was thinking about watching at least 1 of his series before welcoming in new Who? …

our weather has been hot but nothing like previous summers. Still, @blenkinsopthebrave would attest to February, particularly the nights, being the worst, so I await these with trepidation. I loved day light saving, Janette, as our dad would come from work at 6pm & take us to Glenelg for a swim til 9 with hot chips if we stood up on our foam boards. It was exciting being out on a school night in warm water with the breeze kicking up & then rinsing off under the sprinkler before bed.

do the children still finish at 12.30 pm if the temp hits 37.5C? Sometimes this would go for a fortnight & we’d spend hours at various homes with their above ground pools. Ah, childhood. 😮‍💨

my NY reso is to work more in the garden, despite the muggy heat. I’d like to say exercise & diet but I doubt that’ll change!

yes, indeed.
and the filmic quality of those episodes are intriguing. They really are colour-rich, just drenched in sun & shadow. The Silent’s features filled with hollow spaces & crevices like the moon….
