@tardigrade – I’d second @Thane15 – I think quite a few of us are loving and also having problems with the last couple of episodes, so do please keep posting! If this is only “everything is awesome!” then I may only ever post music (maybe that’d be no bad thing).
As mentioned, but maybe I wasn’t clear – I watch and have nits to pick then watched again and those nits mainly went away but other nits sprang out!
[grrrr Dr activating digital bomb timer but cant see tumbler numbers… leaveitleaveitleaveit nits nits nits].
However my issues are piddling little details and I’m really enjoying (and learning!) from the slightly higher discussion here about any flaws!

But when I watch next week, I’m going for the ‘hot air balloon’ approach and just seeing where these episodes take me!

ah – @nick haven’t heard any French pop since leaving work where a few of the team are French. And you’re right, it doesn’t travel across much (there’s a particular aesthetic I find to a lot of what I heard).

I’ve actually got loads of songs popping up on my iTunes when looking for music for these episodes (Extremis and Pyramids…). So I’ll dole it out over the week!

Really enjoying reading the differing views on these episodes as I think I share the concerns of “huh?” at times. But when re-watching an episode I simply ignore those bits I had an issue with or see them differently and overall like the episode!

All I’ll wonder for now is – how do the Monks give Doctor his sight back, appear in cockpits etc?
Surely only in a simulation?

As someone already mentioned (sorry – forget who!) people must consent through ‘love’ as “only then can the link be formed”.

Hi @steffstaff – fantastic first post and your follow up is actually plausible!
(You may have been going for ‘bonkers’ rather than plausible, but no fear, my judgement is hardly a useful barometer!) 🙂

After giving the episode a bit of thought this morning I had an itch to scratch but I’ve now scratched it!
Basically, the concept that we might be a hologram is something that’s out there in science theory. If it was ever proven then instead of killing themselves, scientists would whoop with amazement and start asking questions – they’re scientists!
I scratched that itch by thinking “well, that simulation still needs to iron out how some humans think…”

Was a bit puzzled by the portrait of Pope Benedict IX – its obviously of an actress (anyone recognise who?) but Pope Joan (if she existed) was a different pope altogether. But Benedict IX (if the non-contemporaneous writings are to be believed) was indeed a ‘bit naughty’.

Nothing else to add to what everyone else has mentioned.
Except is Bill’s girlfriend being called “Penny” interesting in any ‘capitalism’ sense (answer: no)
and I haven’t thought of any Bowie references yet (though I haven’t tried to be honest!)

Anyway, at least we now have a device for ‘killing’ Time Lords (oops!).

Prompted by Pedant’s post I googled around and started writing a response about listening to various covers but its coming out nonsensical !

Now, that wouldn’t usually stop me but instead I’m going to add a couple of covers I never knew about until now (you’ve both probably heard these if you’ve just done the same as me!)

The Jam did a version as did Def Leppard*.
Their version is (like the Jam’s) really ‘respectful’ vocally, though with their’s there is a little bit of stretching the song with their own musical take ie the beefy guitars in Leppard’s case.

I’ll admit that I really liked Jamie Mathieson on the Fan Show talk about throwing in tidbits of info about a character (ie Nardole) and seeing how other writers handled it.
And that Oxygen was written before the other episodes and they took some of these aspects on.

That Nardole is ‘dodgy’ is lovely – if he’s Frobisher I’d squee with the best of them (even though I hadn’t come across that character until this forum’s various prodding!).

And now I learn that Frobisher is a shape-shifter…. and I was thinking Sabr….

I’d not heard of David Armand before (my shame) and laughed my arse off at his interpretation of Torn.
I’m not sure if I’ve found what you were looking for, but I did find a version of him with Natalie doing it (as it were).

Well I really liked this one too!
And as mentioned by others, the production values for all the episodes so far are excellent (no wobbly walls or too much bubble wrap!).

Nothing to add to what’s been said other than I’m hoping that the Doctor’s blindness is not something that debilitates him from being the Doctor (if that makes sense). There’s been so much furore over a black Doctor or female Doctor but a ‘disabled’ Doctor hasn’t even been mentioned much (or at least I haven’t picked up on it).
But I admit, as soon as I saw him suffering from exposure to space I thought “uh oh – this’ll cause a regeneration”.

The only other thing that the episode brought to mind is totally personal – I saw the play Gasping* by Ben Elton when it was on originally (possibly first time I’d ever gone to the theatre for pleasure rather than for school!). Hugh Laurie was in it and a key reason why me and my mate went.
At one point we were desperate to shout out from the audience “But what about the poor people!?!”.

We were huge A Bit of Fry and Laurie fans.

hmmmm…. actually I may have a development on my previous bonkers theory.

Like others, I’d said that the Doctor’s next regeneration may be in the vault, yet needing time to ‘bake’.

Now, if I take a theme of this series so far and that is parents and children and taking care of them, perhaps the Doctor has already regenerated but as a child.
Knowing that its not the best physical form to have when confronting humans who would simply dismiss him (Daleks are wiser and wouldn’t care about his form), he goes back in time to his previous regeneration (Capaldi) and asks him to look after him till he physically grows ‘old’ enough to not have to hide anymore. Like around 50 years or so.

hm, on second thoughts maybe I should stick with Moore and move on to other bonkerising.

It made me think of this version of Flight of the Bumblebees by Jools Holland.
I saw this many many many years ago when it was first on TV and luckily rammed a video into the recorder and taped most of the show. It was brilliant and also this part was the first time I’d heard of Professor Longhair (hmmmm …hair….).
Also Gilson Lavis is an awesome drummer.

That cartoon did make me smile @arbutus . And thinking of cartoons and Fur Elise only leads to one place.

As has been seen, my humour is poor, but I do wonder whether the use of Bach is simply a bad pun (ie “bark”).
When the Doctor says he’s brought food he says “mexican” and the pianist hits a dour note. A Michelle Gomez joke?
And didn’t Missy say/sing “pop goes the weasel” in an earlier series… oh I must be imagining that.
Either miss(y)direction or it really is him/her.

ok, so here’s my (latest) theory as to what is in the vault (if not who).

I think that the ‘person’ in the vault is a hero of the Doctor’s.

Why?
Well, Mofatt has played around with heroes for a while throughout his tenure (Robin Hood, Father Xmas, Superman in xmas special etc etc).
But these are usually human heroes – our heroes.

Who are the Doctor’s heroes?

Now, in terms of a bonkers theory, so far all I’ve suggested is a theory (yes, I should stop while I’m ahead!).
So here’s the bonkers bit.
The person in the vault is someone who likes stories. They have connections to the Doctor and writing; they’re interested in heroes themselves; they have connections to ‘magic’ (Capaldoc has been mentioning it a few times). Maybe they’re a hero to Mofatt as well, to bring the whole thing a bit more meta…
Yes – Alan Moore is in the vault.

So – what other songs might go with ‘Knock Knock’?

One, (Mother’s Love by Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou) I can’t find online (grrrr) another is this slow funky sinister track by The Herbaliser (maybe listen in the background and then watch the episode again).

We have The Wooden Song by The Butthole Surfers which is creepy in as much as you’re waiting for them to be their normal weird.

Perhaps the most ‘obvious’ would be this, though I dislike its faux reggae and I just don’t know what Paul Simon’s intentions were for this song inspired by the name of a meal and the dying of a dog (but at least may be about the fear of loss).

So, maybe I’ll go with this which although I only thought of as it mentions ‘knocking’ is about depression and despair, which I can imagine happening to the Landlord as a child….

I enjoyed this one – some quick thoughts as it was last night I saw it and would need a re-watch for anything insightful!

I now listen to Doctor Who episodes through headphones due to my new ohh-they’re-so-thin-nowadays TV being utter rubbish in terms of sound. Why don’t they just admit it and sell the darned things with separate soundbars!?!?
Anyway, I immediately got the stereo and was surprised as I’ve never heard stereo through my headphones via the TV before – I’d actually thought maybe I never could.
It was great and really added to the creaking etc.

Also yet another beautifully realised production – the sets look awesome.

Not sure if its a ‘thing’ but this is the second time I’ve heard the Doctor talking about “magic” in same breath as science-y explanations.

Also – maybe not a ‘thing’ – but is there a theme of humans exploiting aliens (or robots) for their own ends? The relationships are parasitic(?) until the Doctor makes them symbiotic(?)*

Mild squee last night when I saw the Bowie single @phaseshift !

I actually thought as the episode began that Bill was going in ‘undercover’ with the Doctor’s full knowledge and backing, until it played out differently. I’d think Bill smarter than signing something that was ‘too good to be true’ (though I’ve also had my share of wandering around terrible houseshares and in fact living in at least one!).
But I did like the fact that Bill investigated on her own.
Obviously nods towards First Doctor and Susan again (leaving one’s charge behind…).

Many years ago when I was at Uni studying Illustration, a friend was illustrating Hamlet.
Now, I’d ‘done’ Hamlet for my A levels which was only a few years previously, so I could still remember it quite well.
While looking at his sketches and paintings I asked what a particular one was of.

“Oh that’s the library scene”

[“Library scene?” thought I…]
“erm, what library scene?”

He went on to describe the scene in some detail and I had absolutely no recollection of it.
I looked around for the book that I assumed he was using for reference.

“ah, no – I haven’t read it” he says.

“But I saw the film with Mel Gibson”

I didn’t quite know what to say, so I said nothing, nodded and went back to my desk to struggle on my own stuff.

For me illustration was all about whatever text you were illustrating, trying to tease out parts to focus on and illuminate. Lots of thinking and worrying and thinky thinky thinky concepts*.

For him it was a way to draw and produce pictures.
And those pictures, drawings and paintings (as well as drawing with wire in 3D) were some of the most incredible work I’ve had the privilege to see. He is/was insanely gifted and hard working (no coincidence as being ‘gifted’ is not enough to produce that quality – you need to work hard and draw every day).

He was also one of the nicest, most thoughtful, ego-less, amazing people I’ve ever been lucky enough to know and who ended up marrying a princess!

@Thane15 – Puro – I saw Reich and his group perform in London once and it included Pendulum and Clapping.

What was so striking for me hearing it live, was just how much fun they were having; how organic it felt.
That surprised me, because listening to recordings I was more ‘impressed’ by its metronomic patterns. But live it was really ‘human’ (to use a word on other threads!).

Now, not sure why I didn’t post this tune for Thin Ice, but seems a tad obvious.

I’ll also post a version at Glastonbury from Lianne La Havas which is gorgeous.
(and that’s correct grammatically, although also correct would be “who is gorgeous”). Its also impressive in the open at Glastonbury where the sound kinda dies in the wind!

Just a few odds-and-ends before tomorrow’s episode….

Someone (apologies I forget who) asked about the boot that falls onto the Beast below so that it opens its eyes at the beginning of the episode.
For me, the boot was simply stuck to the bottom of the ice sheet and got dislodged by the ‘bump’ of the falling fruit that landed on the ice directly above it.
If the fruit had gone through, it would have been dangerously thin ice!!

How did the boot get there?
Either (as I initially thought) it was simply flotsam in the water that got frozen over.
However, as we learn that people have been ‘sucked’ through the ice by the weird fishes [ooh – song!] then it ‘could’ have got there from a previous victim

Another random thought before the next episode – I just wanted to mention that the ‘Butterfly Effect’ in this episode’s case, is referring more explicitly to Ray Bradbury’s short story A Sound of Thunder.

Weirdly when they first kick in in this sample I thought of Steve Reich’s Come Out* (which should not be danced to!)

That version of the song by the two girls is amazing! Absolutely brilliant (and I know I’m very late to that party – must mention to my niece to keep me up to date in future!).

* If anyone hasn’t heard Come Out then its not an ‘easy’ listen – just be prepared to have it on for quarter of an hour and see how it develops. First time I’ve heard it again in years and its still great though my memory has the ‘transitions’ happening more slowly – just goes to show how unreliable one’s memory can be).

So, the dialogue I heard after the thug with the hand tattoo is ‘swallowed’ by the river/fish is :

“it has a knack to it”
and then I’m assuming the contentious piece:
“Bill, Miss Potts I need you with me” followed by the bit about what are we going to do with ‘tiny’ the Loch less monster.

Sorry @mudlark but I heard “Bill”. and lip reading only gives me Bill and in fact one syllable (though I don’t lip read).
My recording was in London (whatever area that’s allocated as).

However, you most certainly are one of the most marble-sty people on this forum. Honestly, I’ve learned more from you than many people paid to impart knowledge to me!

@pedant – great lyrics for the Man of the World (especially for me as I’m not primarily a lyrics person when it comes to songs, but knowing you I looked them up!).

@Thane15 – Puro thanks so much for Grace Slick! And Jefferson Airplane are a much ‘heavier’ band than I’d taken them for (in a good way!).

What with @phaseshift ‘s Carter USM (I had to try and find what I’d said initially !!) now I’ve got an 80’s/90’s vibe on!!

Thane – I’d ignore any of the historical / hysterical stuff written by journalists and fans from when the Smiths were around.
Mainly completely irrelevant to their music and can only get in the way as to whether you like them.

Thin Ice from The Wall is a great choice!

Really enjoyed this episode. Everyone’s said things I was thinking, except maybe these couple of slight things:
– I loved the episode for setting up the Doctor as alien.
He has seen a lot of death; he’s killed; there’s a wonderful shot from a very low angle that showed him as very alien.
He seemed more concerned in recovering his sonic screwdriver than the poor soul who was holding it (whether child or thug). The child was already ‘dead’ as far as he was concerned so he really just wanted the sonic back; the thug’s death was particularly cold and I do think he asked for the sonic back just so it wasn’t lost in the deep.
– Missy’s brooch (can’t remember where this was mentioned) – I always assumed the brooch was for the daughter and that it was poignant that if Missy had it, it meant something had happened to the daughter…
– the vault “what’s he told you?” seemed important; this won’t be a monster to fear, but one that deserves our sympathy. Maybe something that has taken 50 years to ‘cook’ (such as a body to be possessed by the next regeneration..?)

ha ha ha @Thane15 – Puro I’m lmao as I did think Thane hated the Smiths (which I was perfectly cool with and quite glad in one way as its a definitive opinion).

That he got Johnny Marr’s brilliance (The Hollies!) rather than the whining of Morrissey, an absolutely brilliant response – well done that man!

I just don’t have the downer (pun intended) on Morrissey that Pedant has, only because I’m not that much into lyrics and personally I don’t think Morrissey ever sang about Depression; for me it was more either a ‘teenage’ or faux Romantic “Oh why me?” flouncy whine (and who hasn’t had those self-indulgent moments?).
However, as mentioned there’s also a horrible streak of bloody-mindedness, pettiness, spitefulness and other -ness’ that I’ll not defend Morrissey for (to be honest, I’ll not bother defending him for much – why should I?).
And Marr is terrific in the Smiths (weirdly I didn’t follow his career much afterwards even though it included The The and Modest Mouse, both of whom I had music of).

Great Mogwai @pedant – I really need to listen to more of them, as my ‘drone’ music just isn’t droney enough (I’ve a bit of Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed You Black Emperor, but need more and heavier!)

Thane – great news on the story; hope it goes (went?) well!

@zeyra – I am sooooooo sorry for getting your name wrong. Bad me.

btw for those in the UK, I watched this the other night and really enjoyed it.
Psychedelic Brittania : the music from just one 12 month period in the UK (let alone US and rest of world) was amazing – makes me think I’ll try and find a 1967(ish) link to this whole series of Who!
