– I can get older by getting more Time (than you). And to get more Time (than you) I just need to travel faster or get closer to a massive gravitational object (than you).

@jimthefish – I agree with everything you’ve just said but especially that’s how I’ve been wondering what will happen with Missy.

She saves the day but no one will know.
Except us – we learn that there is redemption.
That the Doctor doesn’t witness it means that he’ll ‘remember’ that the Master is evil but it won’t matter, because he’ll think “maybe next time” as he always has hope.

Mind you, I’ve no idea how any of that will actually unfold in the plot!

@nick – oh, I might need to re-watch as I thought that the Master’s presence on the craft kinda makes sense of the situation *

ie
– He (and I’m saying that deliberately ie SimmMaster) boards the Mondas colony ship (before Mondassian Cybermen were ever a thing);
– Takes control/ guides it nearly into the black hole;
– Convinces as many of the crew as possible to get to the engines;
– Convinces them they can’t go back ‘up’;
– Manipulates the emerging society over hundreds(?) of years;
– Manipulates a surgeon to ‘evolve’ Mondassians into something that can survive the extreme conditions;
– Finally gets the first ‘Modassian Cyberman’ with Bill after many trials/adaptations (the ‘proto-Cybermen patients’);

Now why he was doing all that, why he wanted to create (Mondassian) Cybermen I have no idea! He’s evil?!? It kinda makes sense if he doesn’t have a Tardis to use time dilation to spend 100s of years to create cybermen and then ‘return’ to whatever triggered that need (and not be caught out by being 100s years behind technologically).

But I think he’ll find it hilarious (if it wasn’t an intentional part of an overly-convoluted plan!) that he’s managed to convert the Doctor’s friend and force the Doctor into horrible decisions about saving her.

Well, just to throw in my tuppence…

Loved it!

Overall I loved it (Rachel Talalay and Moffat seem to be a great team), but I also loved details like the tear-shape on rim of the eye hole that echoes the later designs and the Master’s ripping his mask off like an old villain (that would actually not happen like that with the actual makeup!!) 🙂

I did have bits that I didn’t like, such as the skit when they boarded the spacecraft: “Doctor Who” and “companion? Assistant?” “Exposition and Comic Relief” – it was just too many knowing winks for my liking (and it is just a taste thing) but I’d hate it if the show didn’t ‘push’ and provoke.
I was also squirming a bit with Mr Razer’s(sp?) accent – East European? Jewish? But am happy enough that it was resolved as a Master-hammy-disguise! 😉

Something no one’s mentioned yet (forgive me if you did and I missed it!) was that the cornfields seen through one window of the massive craft reminded me of the fields in Smile. What with the blue guy and if @pedant spotted Heather then… nah I don’t think all the series has taken place on board, but if I was to eat too much cheese and dream up something bonkers then I would try that route!

Anyway, looking forward to next Sunday (can’t see it on Saturday unfortunately) as want to see just how this all resolves!
And will probably re-watch this episode before watching the finale as a double-header (as I say, I really enjoyed this episode!)

Completely coincidentally I was watching a panel at a ComicCon last night (it was from maybe a year ago? Coleman, Gomez and Peter Capaldi were asked which monster they would most like to play….

Capaldi’s answer – Dracula.

Gary Oldman’s Dracula to be precise.

I fear Gatiss will be hammering Hammer and Amicus, but agree that Capaldi could be a fine villain.

I jest – currently musicians make most of their money from live gigs so live performances online showing to thousands “you should go to the next gig by this person because they are great live” are (imo) essential.
I think the whole ‘don’t let them listen/download it’ legal culture is killing musicians but at the same time we have a lopsided technical availability.
Probably blockchain or somesuch will redress this, but I hope it doesn’t stifle creatives and creativity for too many years.

Last night in London we’ve had a terrible tragedy in a tower block fire, which will unfortunately result in the deaths of many people.

I sometimes hear (here and elsewhere) that people don’t care about each other.
Sometimes I think it might be true, but unfortunately its in tragic circumstances that I learn (again) that I’m an idiot.

Local residents from every class, creed, and cultural background have been coming together to help. The very rich and the very poor. Its so spontaneous that coordinating services haven’t initially been able to really get what locals have been bringing to the right people yet its still coming.
People aren’t being asked to bring clothing, food, toiletries etc they are just bringing what they have and what they think might be useful (including toys for children).

There will be lots of things this tragedy brings up (fire safety; listening to tenants etc) but tragically it does show that people do care for each other when tragedy strikes.

Obviously this happens across the world every day and is yet another reason why its stupid of me to doubt human nature.
Its only when we’re convinced that others aren’t ‘people’ that our natural humanity is lost.

Not sure how much (or often!) I’ve said I like Michelle Gomez’s Missy but I really like Michelle Gomez’s Missy.

I wonder if her ‘redemption’ (if that’s the right word) will somehow be her helping The Doctor’s regeneration; maybe she nudges it (maybe by forcing Bill to really shoot him this time).
So doing the ‘right’ thing but in all the wrong ways!

well – I enjoyed this one.
As with all the episodes this season, it was brilliantly realised in terms of how it looked (steampunk, Victorian soldiers and tea set; Ice Warriors).

I made no notes during it, so no bonkers theories, didn’t spot any connections (and I’ve tried looking at 1881 and Edgar Burroughs).
I’m not sure that I actually ‘get’ the Ice Warriors in terms of their motivations; not sure I can anticipate what they’ll do in any situation (but that’s me).

Initially I’d thought that the Tardis simply left to ‘force’ a situation where the Doctor engaged and solved whatever was to be solved. It was simply Nardole’s decision to invite Missy into the Tardis (I loved the look on his face and agree with people here talking about escaped animals!). But I’m now not so sure after reading comments here (but have no better idea!).

@wolfweed – that ‘animation’ of the song is fantastic! Great artwork and loved the lo-fi nature of it.
@miapatrick – ‘don’t you think he looks tired?’ – brilliant idea!
@bluesqueakpip – agree with your thoughts on Master/Missy (Misster? Massty?). I’d also include her solution to the Monks in saying that ‘the connection’ had to be killed (‘but that’s Bill’ – “Awkward”). It wasn’t the only solution, but it was the solution that would cause maximum distress for the Doctor; ie Missy would ‘win’.
And I do think that their relationship is simply ‘you’re my best friend’ (and I’ll forgive anything).

I did raise an eyebrow when I read you asking for people to write something for you as it was so out of character, so no surprise it was a typo!

Beards – yes, I’ve heard similar here (ie politicians being told to not have a beard). No idea where it comes from and only seems to be a thing for politicians rather than anyone else.

In terms of Trumps tweets – possibly best to look at time of day he tweeted. He seems to get up early, read/watch slightly dodgy news and tweet from his personal account without much thought. His advisors use the POTUS feed.
But advised or not – he’s responsible for his tweets, speeches and actions. What he said and repeated without apology about the London mayor is odious. It seems to be personal animosity toward Sadiq Khan based on at least Khan’s expression of distaste at Trump’s plans to ban Muslims. I can’t say that its also based on any inherent bigotry on Trump’s part (though I look at his actions and… will let everyone decide).

As for a Gareth-with-a-beard – unfortunately I’ve no idea who that was!

Not sure if this has been mentioned here, but from the UK coverage of the recent election it seems there was a very large turnout by ‘young voters’ which swung a lot of seats in Labour’s favour.
Having seen their vote ‘making a difference’ (even if there was an ultimate ‘failure’ in not getting Labour into power) it’ll be interesting what might happen in the next election (whenever that may be).

But can’t be a bad thing galvanising people to care about politics.

I’ll also be interested in how they were reached – eg probably by Momentum (a campaigning team which works to get votes in favour for Corbyn) but whether it was sophisticated social media blah blah or a more traditional ‘physical’ approach (people passing out leaflets and talking to young people in parks etc).

Hi all – in terms of negotiating Brexit…

Maybe I’m being cynical but I’d say that this was actually the election to not win.
Whoever negotiates Brexit will get a deal that the others (opposition parties and opposition media etc) will say is terrible. Regardless of who negotiates and what that deal is.

So its almost a perfect result for Corbyn – ‘look, I showed I can win campaigns’; yet is still in Opposition so can harangue May for her negotiating.

In 2020 (or whenever the next election) he either says ‘I held their feet to the fire but now step down’ or is in similar position to now and says ‘I can lead to a victory’.
Win win.

May has lost lost.
No matter what she negotiates will not be enough.

And I say this based on the unrealistic promises that were made for what Brexit would achieve and yet no mention of the ‘cost’ in terms of settlement – no one who voted for Brexit will be happy and no one who voted to Remain will either.

But even with all that I’m happier today than this time last week.

Hi @nick – just to say that I agreed with your earlier post (while I was writing my overly long one!).
Also enjoying the Guardian article of the US journalist who visited Yorkshire (I’m from the South, but have relations in Rotherham and an uncle who was a miner, and remember the miners’ strike though I’m a bit younger than you).

But I need to pop out so can’t give you any thoughts on what may have been a hypothetical question(!) but interesting times…

hmmm…. went to bed hearing the ‘Exit poll’ predicting a huge loss of seats for Tories and thought “that’s interesting… but ‘Exit polls’ can be wrong so won’t hold my breath” (which while sleeping is dangerous I assume).

And now the results are in.

In my opinion… *

@Thane15 – you mentioned the Tory manifesto pledge around how the elderly would pay for care. It seems that May has a very small coterie of advisers and that they didn’t put ideas out more widely through the party. If they had, a few may have told them “are you mad? Are you asking me to explain complex tax ‘winners and losers’ on the doorstep to our now-worried core voters who seem to lose through this?”. But worse than put it in, was to do a U-turn during an election and change it.
The Tories positioned the election to be purely who leads the Brexit negotiations – trust in the leader’s personality .

Personally what I heard in the UK from the Tories was simply a repeated slogan “Strong and Stable leadership” (until that went silent after the manifesto U-turn). Other slogans came and went (eg “[Corbyn needs a] magic money tree” to pay for his manifesto).
And what we got from Corbyn was debate. He turned up for TV debates where May stayed away (unlike all the other leaders). Like him or loathe him, he was visibly debating.

IF this results in a minority government which is less austere, more collaborative in its decision making and more sensible on Europe (and other things like encryption) then its actually not a bad result for the UK.
However… that’s a lot to ask for, the Tories still ‘won’ and haven’t given any indication about changing any of their policies and it could get to be quite partisan and stifle anything getting done.

hmm…. still – better than someone who believes they have a mandate not to listen to the electorate.

* I reserve the right to change my opinion after thinking harder about it, listening to others and after a second cup of tea this morning.

Those are great covers!
I always think a truly great cover is when the person singing it sounds like they’re the only person that could’ve sung it; and/or if they’ve translated it into another musical genre and show something new about the song.
Which (for me) a folk version of Ever Fallen in Love.. does. It makes it tender.

Coincidentally I’ve been looking for a Bowie song for The Lie of The Land and have been trying not to use the one that someone (rightly) suggested for the previous episode.
But…. Toby Whithouse is obviously an appalling writer in that he hasn’t given me us an obvious Bowie reference!!

While I was going through tunes I came across this one again.
Its something I posted before (for whatever reason) but when a few seconds in I didn’t skip it for something else.
I listened through and then went looking for another version to the one I originally posted.
And I found this version.

And, maybe its just that what happened in London Bridge last weekend and having worked in that area over the years, and not knowing if friends were ok for a few hours (they’re fine) but… I dunno.
Maybe I just needed to feel some love or whatever.

Maybe its indulgent of me but… this just feels right.
Forgive me if you feel it inappropriate (its not meant to be).

Regardless, tell someone tomorrow (or today if its the morning) that you love them. Maybe that’d be too heavy – so maybe just hug them, or make them tea or laugh at their joke. Or send them an email.

I’ve been going through my music and though lots popped up, when listening to them, there isn’t that sense of “ah – that sums up the episode!”.

Hi @missrori – thanks for picking up on something I said. I like your reflection on the fact this isn’t a ‘special person’ narrative because of prophecy/ lineage etc. That’s something I hadn’t thought about. And I agree that Bill is ‘special’ because she is quite simply a brilliant person – kind, intelligent and brave (and the “1 in 7 billion” could be any one of us – if we ignore the maths! 😉 ).

Oddly his conceit seems to ring even worse in that light! He should’ve been even more proud of her.
But maybe I’m nit-picking and maybe my memory of that line is wrong!

Again – thanks for making me see this as not a ‘great man/ chosen one’ type of storyline as I wasn’t conscious of it like that – and you’re right!

So – have only seen The Lie of the Land once and think it probably requires a rewatch.
So far I’m lacking enthusiasm for this trio of stories (rather than actively disliking them). It may be however simply due to a series of small tiny elements that makes me wince or take me out of the story.
Paper cuts if you will.
I had problems with the Doctor’s characterisation: both his collusion, attitude to violence (including expecting Bill to shoot him??!!?) but also a line that (from memory) went something like:
“I did save the world when I was taking pictures of her Mum – I thought I was only doing her a favour” – I guess he’s been characterised as conceited before but it just… rankled this time.

But a smile when we saw Magpie Electronics is still around.

And always like the “Get the band back together” line (nice @pedant ).

Really appreciate and enjoying reading others’ thoughts both for and against.

I agree that the Monks seem powerful and then vulnerable for no reason (eg a plane and a sub try to attack it in Pyramid at the End of the World and they are dealt with easily. Here a hulk-prison-ship holding their enemy has slipped its anchor and is bearing down on them and… nothing much).

Anyway – what is the motivation of the Monks – why did they want to take over the World?
They’re shown as simulation game-players with powerful real-world tools (pyramid).

The easy thought (for me) is that they are excited game-players who enjoy meddling with a modelled (simulation) world and then taking that to a new ‘high’ by doing it to a Real World?
Basically Grand Theft Auto players becoming Grand Theft World players – the Playstation generation (left as ‘husks’).

But a more enjoyable (for me) thought is to reflect that they want to manage the World better than the inhabitants can (by simulating outcomes and micro-managing the World).
Basically they’re needy project managers (needing love as lets face it, PMs never get the love or credit they deserve).

If your son is interested in football but not partisan (always a good thing), then a look at the economics, Board structures etc especially compared to other sectors, are possibly a nice seam of ‘interest’. (thoug lets face it the playing/ winning/ losing is always the main thing!).

The Guardian’s David Conn often uses that as his focus as does the blogger A Swiss Ramble (both cover teams beyond Arsenal – I just happen to have come across them after Arsenal’s travails.
I’m not ‘endorsing’ them if they happen to turn out to have certain views (I don’t ‘follow’ them) but when I’ve come across them its been interesting

I remember hearing Guy Garvey from Elbow on Desert Island Discs and how he talked about how really great songwriters can perfect a song down to its elements.

I think he said he could have chosen many, but he chose this by Tom Waits.

Which made me smile as I love this song anyway and for what I took for its simplicity (Garvey and others here may tell me rightly that its actually sophisticated yet simply laid out like a lace dress).
But it also made me think of this song by Elbow themselves and whether it was influenced by Waits.

Less is more sometimes and editing is king.

So, as I mentioned only recently to another close friend of the show, I saw a parallel between the whole “Wenger/ Moffat out!” “you ruined my franchise!” brigade.
Lots of ‘fans’ with short memories and unrealistically high expectations (where’s Tom Baker / Liam Brady?)

FWIW I started supporting Arsenal when I was about 6 or 7 or 8 (really not sure) and have never been someone who can remember a goal or a particular win or recite a teamsheet. I can only date when I chose Arsenal as a team (two brothers goading me “who you gonna support??!!?!!???) and deliberately choosing a team in midtable (well, upper midtable).
When I opened my eyes and saw where the pin I’d placed had fallen (for the umpteenth time leaving the newspaper sports pages like cotton in places – but I didn’t even know where some of those Scottish clubs were) ‘Arsenal’ just felt right.

And weeks later watching on Match of the Day and realising Liam Brady, David O’Leary, Pat Jennings and Frank Stapleton were Irish (as are both my parents) it kinda made even more sense.

Anyway, I have a bit of perspective, remember the fallow years, and have two brothers who support Spurs and Man U.
Which itself gives one…. even more perspective!

So – to your oh-so-innocent question: Wenger in or out ?

Well…. if the decision had been made months ago when it needed to have been then plans, structures etc would have been put in place to transition from a manager and structure that has been there for 20+ years.
As that hadn’t happened, then the only sensible course was to extend Wenger for 2 years, get new players in and extend those we want to stay (who all talk about joining because of Wenger) and now put in place the structure for transition.

Unfortunately this season was the season we didn’t get into the Champions League under his tenure. However, from what I’ve read, the deal years ago with Wenger and the Board was for Wenger to achieve to get in once every 3 seasons while we built and moved into a new stadium – a knowingly disruptive and cash-strapped period when we sold off our best players each year. Instead he overachieved, even when petro-cash came into football.
Instead of every 3 years he managed to get us into the Champions League (and its millions of ££s) every single year – until this season.

However – we’re not a poor club by any means. We have resources, we could easily have pumped resources in (debt) at certain points and certainly in the last 3-4 years we’ve been able to do that after 10 years of managing within our (very wealthy by 90% of other clubs) means.
Its just that we’re judged against the top 5-10% who mostly have huge debts.
There’s also a feeling now that at one time we were seen as changing the way clubs and footballers were managed – (rightly or wrongly) Wenger was seen as a thought-leader (his focus on their diet, his desire for them to stop being heavy drinkers etc). Now he’s seen as stubborn, old-fashioned, intransigent.

You were having fun and having a fun and gentle and good humoured poke.
I giggled and enjoyed the poke (I’m ticklish).
But I was already on my umpteenth glass of wine and who-knows-which 800% slowed down Radiohead song in my headphones. I’ve rambled. Massively. Apologies.

To answer a simple question:
I (now we’re at this point of the season without decisiveness and clarity earlier) want Wenger to stay (and he has now unsurprisingly been offered and accepted a 2 year extension) and to leave with more silverware next season with pride and his head held high and for fans to be singing his name with pride.

Pride? He is the manager of the only team that never had a loss during a season in the EPL (ie in the modern game). The Invincible Season. He has now won the FA Cup (a venerable competition in England) more times than any manager ever in its history. For the same club. If this number of wins is ever repeated by a manager I strongly doubt its ever for the same club.
And it takes guts to always front up to the cameras even if others (ie CEO etc) should have.

When he goes maybe Arsenal will get a Chibnall – and maybe that will prove to be better.

Battlezone – yeah, I kinda thought similar and then it kinda felt that the designer was given a brief of “a bit like visualising sonar” which to be honest is probably easier than recreating ‘crappy’ (nowadays) visuals (that I remember as being pretty fuckin’ awesome).

@wolfweed – that is unbelievable. Its also crazy how a show we (I) nitpick at has so short a time for producing. The timelines are crazy (and not really in a timey-wimey way).

There’s nothing useful I can say for his loss; just hope he has someone he loves who loves him who can hold him through the waves.

So, although I have a couple of songs related to monks and games and stuff, they’re all from my usual suspects I’m afraid.

Still, here’s something a bit different.

Obviously, out of my usual suspects ‘Pyramid song‘ sprang to mind. Its an ok Radiohead song, probably better than ok in fact.

But then I found this.
I didn’t even know this was a ‘thing’ !

I’m now listening to ‘Nude’ which is even better.

Someone somewhere needs to develop these slowdowns orchestrally with choirs and suchlike (admittedly those aren’t quite the right terms as my more learned friends here will know!!). Its just that hearing them, I’m reminded what Brian (bloody) Eno did on Discreet Music with Variations on Canon in D Major by Pachebel (with the other ‘bloody’ Gavin Bryars). Now I don’t really know what Eno and Bryars did, but hearing it I know he was doing something.

Something should be done with Radiohead.

hey @thane15 – I’ve not heard that Bowie track before (Shadow Man) but think I agree with you Thane in preferring the later version.

Love the fact that you’re getting so much from the lyrics!
