@nerys Yes I caught that too. She did ask for cash.

@mudlark yes the theme was very much about loss and how we handle that and I think Ryan’s loss of his grandmother and the absent father will be an ongoing “concern” of this series. There may be no ongoing story arc as such but I think there will be ongoing themes and character development arcs. I have not seen much of Chibnell’s work other than his Dr Who stories but the little short about Amy and Rory’s son and Rory’s Dad indicates a commitment to the characters and an interest in what becomes of them post story. I gather that characterisation is also one of the strengths of Broadchurch.

I loved the emphasis on the importance of pockets in the episode which was really the main nod to the gender change. The Doctor may have changed gender but still needs pockets just as much.. An excellent point I thought.

Just to give the reference to Sheffield steal relevance to the younger generation, while watching the episode at home, I found a Sheffield steal bread knife and brandished it about.

Also not relevant to anything but I really loved the opening scene, the Peaks at “golden hour”. I discovered the “wild and untamed beauty” of the Peaks a few years ago while touring with the family. What to me is so surprising is that tucked away in the middle of industrial England, just a few miles from places like Sheffield, is this wonderful wilderness. In Australia we are used to travelling hundreds of miles without seeing any variation in landscape. Even trees and fences become novelties in the outback.

@bluesqueakpip Now that is an idea, Ryan could be River’s son. We are told his mother is dead however that would make Grace the Doctor’s mother which does not really work, not unless Chibnell is going to revive the Doctor as half human or reveal that Grace is really a Timelord. Either of course is possible and both, particularly the later, would be fun ideas.

@translatorcircuit. I thought nothing of it, other than, actor has piercings, but those piercings were rather highlighted weren’t they. Maybe another clue or hint to something.

@troysgorline I wondered about that too but think it is more a funny throwaway line.  Still I don’t expect we will be encountering UNIT in this series.

We re watched last night with the family. Second son, R.2, was impressed. His only criticisms were that there were several cut scenes that needed more lead in. He liked the Doctor and companions. The story was a bit ordinary but that was really only the mechanism to introduce the new team.

I only made one note, “Ryan’s Dad?”. That conversation was unnecessary, in what was otherwise a fairly tight script and so I suspect that is has some significance. I just hope it will be more interesting than “he and his Dad are reconciled at the end”.

Finally got to watch the episode… and loved it. There was one really scary bit, when she leapt up from the sofa and the alarm was going off. It took a few seconds before everyone in the room realised that the alarm was outside and not part of the show it was timed so perfectly.

Jodie Whittaker is good. I was worried at first but within ten minutes fully accepted that she is the Doctor. She captures the character. I loved the opp shop costume hunt. It looked so like one of my own local opp shops. I recall that someone speculated on the costume being something she picked up at Oxfams or the like back when the costume was discussed.

It certainly has a very different vibe. At times it felt more like an episode of Fringe. It does have an “older” feel.

I suspect that each episode might have a cliff hanger ending, in BG style but the episodes themselves will be single stories. Time will tell.

I did not notice the music so it was not intrusive which was good. Will pay more attention next watching.

So looking forward to re watching with the boys as R.2 & 3 were not present tonight. We have jelly babies, jammy dodgers and fish fingers left over for the family viewing and we won’t have to worry about timely or untimely alarms..

@blenkinsopthebrave Sorry to hear about your “Who” related problems. The lunacy our our current government only gets more and more extreme. One would laugh if the outcomes were not so destructive, for the population and for the environment. I don’t know what upsets me more the government or the fools who keep voting them in. At least here in SA we had many years of sanity, though we were punished for it but now we too have succumbed to the stupidity.

I have not watched the new episode either yet but I only have to wait another day. We have a Dr Who event tomorrow night. Heading out shortly to buy the required jelly babies. Have to make Jammy Dodgers as they are not longer available in supermarkets here.

@miapatrick Good to hear from you again. We have missed you too. I hope that you and boyfriend both enjoy this series equally. I suspect at at least one of our sons will enjoy it more, another less. He has been watching Chibnell’s previous episodes and is not confident. However the second son did not really enjoy Moffat’s story writing style and I think will prefer the more episodic approach. I fear I am going to miss Moffat. I am not a fan of episodic TV.

@jimthefish I am certain that there are plenty of “broflakes” who will be on the look out for the slightest dip in ratings to jump in and blame Whittaker. Dangerous times ahead.. I suspect ratings will be right up there for the premier at least. Dr Who has never been so talked about as it was with the casting of Jodie W. I am certain that many lapsed fans will tune in just out of curiosity so here’s hoping that they are “hooked”. There are not many TV series that I enjoy and even less that the entire family watch so I don’t want Who to be axed any time soon. I am hoping that the occasional change in showrunner will provide rejuvenation enough, at least for the near future. (Though Chibnell is not the showrunner I would have chosen.)

I guess in the U.K. tonight is the night!! (We will be waiting until Wednesday to watch but I am looking forward to reading other’s reactions here tomorrow.

@ichabod  I think your final line there really says it. “I hope Chibnall and co can and well deliver.” The success of the show has every bit as much to do with the showrunner as it does the main actor and to attribute the rise and fall of ratings to the appeal of the actor playing the Doctor is less than fair. Many factors effect ratings. There is a huge shift happening in the way people watch TV but if the “bosses” and they are those who sit over and above Chibnell and those who make the show, obsess with ratings the quality of the show will suffer. I suspect that Moffat was often under pressure from “above” to shape his work to satisfy their demands and the quality suffered accordingly. It was almost certainly also true for RTD though  I suspect the later might have been better at ignoring them.

    @mudlark,

I really enjoy your nitpicking on historical detail. I drive my sons crazy by doing the same but I believe that inaccuracies need to be pointed out otherwise people are being mis-educated. I have often heard friends say, “well I guess that is how it was”, after watching historical films or tv series to which I often have to reply, “well not, not really.”

Re SA history, I have well and truely learnt the depth of my mistake. I now have a history, (pending revision) about early settlers in our local region. S.A. history is rather like that of the Shire. (LOTR) Not so much about important people or great historical events but “real” people, and SA was also very progressive politically. Still not sorry for ducking out of doing History of Religion however… As another off topic aside, my best friend’s ancestors were East Anglian.

Back to topic, (I am trying to be good…) I am feeling far more optimistic about the new series the closer it gets.

And that reminds me that today I must visit the local Lolly shop and see if they stock English Jelly Babies..

@mudlark I don’t think anyone in a position of power was “nice”. Those who inherit power maybe though being nice was not a good survival skill, but Elizabeth was certainly highly intelligent and that does not come across in the Day of the Doctor. I have not read any of Elizabeth’s poems or actual writings, only second hand accounts of her, mostly through TV Docos as the Tudor period is not one I have studied. I believe that the script of Elizabeth R did draw heavily upon the letters and records etc of the time and was a reasonable depiction of the woman and era. Back then BBC was committed to historical accuracy. (Australian schools/unis tend to focus upon modern European history and Australian history, or at least they did when I was there. I think they are a little broader in scope now. I did not do history hons because the subjects on offer were History of Religion in Australia, a very definite no for me, and History of South Australia which at the time I thought was non existent, I was wrong about that.)

But I am in danger of veering off topic. I will conclude by saying that I really, really, hope there are some good historical episodes this series. In these days of “fake news” it would be nice to see Dr Who shine a little light upon the past, albeit in a very fictionalised way.

    janetteB @replies

@mudlark Much though I love “Day of hte Doctor” I find the depiction of Elizabeth 1st irritating. to depict one of the strongest, (by no means the nicest) women in British history for comedy was perhaps a bit questionable. (Blackadder does it well but Blackadder is comedy.) Of course there is no knowing exactly how Elizabeth did act because every account of her was coloured by the bias of the writer, and our own impressions are coloured by TV and Film. For me Elizabeth will always be Glenda Jackson and so I found the depiction of her acting like a lovesick teenager to be jarring.

On recent rewatch I find I enjoy the stories with Tennant and Martha and of course Tennant and Donna but so not much the ones with Rose. The every woman but Donna must fall in love with him line became tiresome but that is the fault of the script writers telling the viewer rather than letting the story unfold. I think also they were playing up the romance to help sell the series to a younger audience which it certainly did.

I wonder how Chibnell will handle the producers’ request to ram in romance to keep up audience numbers. (if indeed that is the case.) That is going to be tricky to navigate and do well,, if done at all.

I feel the same way these days about being Australian. I would apologise for our current government only I have actively campaigned against them so I feel I should not have to. @missy when it comes to diet, yes expert advice is shaky and common sense is the best approach. However.. that is not the case with most areas of Science. The consensus on global warming is long standing. Global warming was first noted over a hundred years ago, perhaps because there is concrete evidence whereas when it comes to the human body research is still groping in the dark. @pedent CGI does not bother me and I did not say I dislike all CGI. Far far from it. I love good well used CGI, It creates infinite possibilities. (indeed one day, I hope, my second son will be employed in the industry) Like all good things however there is excessive use, ie when a scene does not look, “natural”. No immediate examples spring to mind other than movie trailers, which appear to be all CGI, no story or character development. There were times in LOTR when Jackson used CGI to create an effect, Galadrial at the mirror for instance, instead of letting the actor act it out. (there I did recall an example after all.)

MCU? have not seen that one before. It is certainly a very “busy” image and um, colourful. Heavy use of CGI which is worrying. CGI is great but not when overused. Nice to see the TArdis poking out of a cloud though.

(on the overuse of CGI have been watching some older Sci fi stuff recently and have been observing that when done well, models have a realistic look that CGI is yet to achieve.)

Sad news regarding the death of Jacqueline Pierce, AKA Servalon. She was instrumental to the success of Blake’s 7 and excellent in the few other roles I saw her in. She was a very disturbing Rosa Dartle in David Copperfield.

In recent years I have found trailers to be really misleading, probably because they are aimed at a “non-fan” demographic in an attempt to widen the viewer base. It reached the point where I found the trailers off putting and so have avoided them because I would start watching the series/Christmas Special with a negative bias. Reading all the above comments I think I’ll give this trailer a miss too despite my curiosity and impatience.

@tempusfugit I worry about Chibnell’s ability as show runner but like you the series would have to be very bad indeed for me to give up on it and I am looking forward to seeing Jodie W’ in the role because I really don’t know what to expect. Likewise I liked Murray Gold’s music but look forward to the new composer’s approach.

I have already made plans with friends for a Dr Who party (involving Jammy Dodgers, fish fingers with custard and jelly babies) when it starts. Will be on the Wednesday night however so the question is whether to wait till then or watch first and pretend on Wednesday that I have not already seen it.

@Tempusfugit An actor is the role they play, (or should be) so hopefully Jodie W will be “the Doctor” when she steps out of the Tardis. I am more concerned about the change in showrunner but like you I am quite determined to love Dr Who no matter what. (with the exception of that horrible 90s movie which failed utterly to capture the essence of the series)

Unfortunately the last Star Wars film was fairly awful, no fault of any of the actors more to do with the way the franchise is being “milked” for profit. Some fans have chosen to pin the film’s failings to their anti feminist agenda  and voice their views on line which then taints all those to criticise the film. Sad times we live in. I don’t recall there being any complaints that casting a woman as the main character in Alien or Aliens ruined those films. Sometimes I feel as though we are going backwards not forwards especially in the entertainment industry which is still so male dominated. Having studied film it is a “beef” of mine. The male point of view was absolute in film criticism.

@tempusfugit I also loved his lack of social niceties. He is honest and naive. He was the most alien of all the new Doctors but the most “humanist”. It is because he is outside our culture, our world, that he can see humans for what we are. (thought I often think he is far too generous in his view.) @mudlark My second son is currently doing a kind of English basics course on line which is is none to happy about but on reading through several of the exercises I realised how little I actually know about grammar. I have always got by on instinct. Ironically I did an English honours degree from the same Uni and learnt nothing at all about Grammar. It was assumed knowledge. The benefit of helping sons with homework is that I get to learn things too. (probably more than they learn.) The downside is it is taking up way too much of my time.

..and hence..I have fallen behind with the posts on this thread. I keep leaving it open in tabs as a promise for when I have the time but other tasks keep intervening. Grrr. There have been some very interesting discussions which I am sorry for missing out on.

@jimthefish TV viewing is evolving. The old way of watching tv, which incidentally I have always disliked, is fast disappearing. People do cling to hold habits as though “the way it was” is the way it should be for ever. I refused to buy a TV until I could also afford a video, (this being back in the early 80s) because I wanted to watch TV on my own terms, ie when it pleased me to do so and not when someone interstate decided I should having always been of a cantankerous frame of mind. It has been many years since we have watched ‘free to air” in our household. Yes we tend to binge watch but as Moffat said, we don’t read books one chapter a week. We take a book off the shelf and read it when we please. A TV series should be watched in whatever way pleases. I would be surprised however if they do put the entire series up on iview in one hit. It is still fun to have that wait for each new episode. Makes Dr Who “event” viewing. Maybe Dr Who is an exception.

I noted on the Guardian a couple of days ago they said Dr Who would start either September or October. Nothing definite.

@tempusfugit Welcome. I hope you enjoy it here. Most of us here are Capaldi fans too. He is in many ways the “ultimate” Doctor because he as able to play every aspect of the Doctor’s character. I could see aspects of every previous regeneration in him.

Veering off topic here but Agora is an excellent film. there is a good breakdown of the history in the Guardians, now long defunct “Reel History”. You will need to search to find it. It does indeed seem that it was more politics and religion behind the demise of Hypatia and not sexism though that was certainly a factor with the christian zealots.

I have been following the discussion with interest but not posting. The last three series did bring a new depth to Who. I feel as though Moffat initially was working within the parameter of “light entertainment”  and Matt Smith was best suited to that lighter tone though  I suspect that as he matures Matt will be certainly able to handle roles with depth. Even though Matt conveyed the sense of old man in a young man’s body Capaldi was better able to carry the sense of a Doctor bearing the weight of over a Thousand Years of living, all the grief, anger, as well as the joy was fermenting inside him. In Matt we saw the light face, the happy smile put on to amuse the young relatives and friends, but Capaldi was “himself”, no disguise, no light pretense. He had an enormous capacity to enjoy life. I loved his smile in Last Christmas when he drives the sleigh for instance, but he carried a deep well of grief that was always evident.

@ichabod I really enjoy doing historical research, or even researching for the boys’ projects. Finding information be it about something that is happening now or details about forgotten lives from one hundred years ago is always a thrill. I feel as thought I am opening small windows onto the past. One can only see so much and there is always so much more that is lost and cannot be retrieved, at least without a Tardis. What wouldn’t I give to be able to take a trip back and be a fly on the wall, just to resolve some of those discoverable mysteries. (I have just started a new history project, which is not good as I have yet to finish the last but could not resist dipping in to the research.)

@blenkinsopthebrave I hope you are safe from fires. Not a problem you would really expect to have to deal with once leaving this sunburnt country. @winston I hope you are able to stay cool. I feel the cold far more here than I did in Sweden, but felt the heat more there.)

Back to topic, the Introduction to the new Doctor stories have all been good. Eleventh Hour is perhaps the best but it is closely followed by Deep Breath, only the later is far darker in tone. I think I can quote almost ever line. “You’ve all developed a fault.” “Who frowned me this face?” “five foot and crying. You never stood a chance.”

I also enjoy RTD’s intro to David Tennant. All three actors did a wonderful job of establishing their characters within those first few, vital minutes. Here’s hoping that Jodie W. manages to pull off the same and the script does not let her down.

@gamergirlavatar Two of Troughton’s sons are actors. David had one of his first acting jobs in Dr Who when his father was Doctor, The Enemy of the World) and went on to have a more prominent role in Curse of Peladon as Peladon. He was also in Midnight. (David Tennant) He is a fine actor. His son, Sam Troughton, is also an actor but has yet to make an appearance in Dr Who. I am sure it is only a matter of time. Harry Melling, (Dudley Dursley) is another grandson of Patrick Troughton and now he has thinned down the family likeness is showing more. They are quite an acting dynasty the Troughtons.

@blenkinsopthebrave The Eleventh Hour is always a pleasure to watch. One of those episodes I never tire of. We finished our AGWho rewatch a few months ago and are now running through BG Who. @thane16 (Puro) yes I certainly thought so. I don’t have any nostalgia at all for the 70s. Only 1979 stands out as a good year. I was in Yr 11 the class bullies had all dropped out by then, Thank goodness for the young school leaving age. I discovered my love of history and English, had a good friend group and also began escaping from home, going cycling or sitting on my best friend’s front verandah playing scrabble and drinking Baileys. That was also the year I became a Dr Who fan and so Doctor Who is very associated with that one happy year of my youth. The following year it all went down hill again. My best friend dropped out of school, my other friends either dropped our or moved away and it was yr 12.

@thane16 Oh yes schools in the 70s were brutal. I was bullied for wearing white socks on my first day at high school. I was so confused as to why it mattered. My best friend, whose mother was on a pension would not go to school on casual dress days as her Mum could not afford to buy her Levis. And it varied from school to school too. In our school in Ballarat where it rained all the time umbrellas were a big no no but often saw kids from schools in Melbourne wandering around with brollies. Makes no sense at all.

We had to defer our viewing of Star Trek to this week. I am really looking forward to it and will keep in mind the comments made by @blenkinsopthebrave and @winston.

“tis indeed a well designed poster. I don’t think they will ever drop the Tardis. It is so iconic and so good for marketing. I should know. We have numerous model Tardis around the house. (What is the plural of Tardis?)

@blenkinsopthebrave I liked the quarries. they were iconic too. Maybe that is what CC is aiming at for all his talk about delivering a fresh new take, a return to the feel of the show he clearly loved when he was young.

Well only three months to wait and that will fly by. I already have the jelly babies though I fear they may be past their best. Luckily a lolly shop has opened up “down the street” and appears to e thriving so hopefully they will still be about in October as I am certain they will stock English jelly babies.

@whisht My coffee is telling me that the teaser does indeed suggest a quest. They are being summoned by the Doctor. Of course it could just be his/her way of saying, “come and have wild adventures with me”.

@wolfweed. Humm I am going to have to do a Playmobil custom of the new Doctor. Can’t let Lego have it all

I thought I recognised the name Wayne yip. He directed Empress of Mars and Lie of the Land which we will be watching tonight, coincidentally. Good to see that some Who Alumni are returning after all and Wayne has good credentials.

@geoffers We are all starving for news right now. I check in every day and some nights I go hunting through other sites for news but there is none to be found which is not surprising as nothing ever escapes the notice of @wolfweed our resident reporter.

@gamergirlavatar Yes Five-ish Doctors was such a good will project, even getting the actors’ children and Peter Jackson involved. Loved RTD at the end. (I noticed that Peter Davison’s son is now acting in Poldark. I wonder if one day we will see him in Dr Who. Both of Troughton’s sons have had roles over the years,)

@blenkinsopthebrave Thanks I will use that too. I am perhaps being too harsh about original Star Trek. I have only seen the odd episode having been introduced into Trekdom through Next Generation so my impression is of N.G. not original. I enjoyed watching N.G only to predict how the story was going to resolve knowing that every episode would return to status quo with the humans solving the problem and flying away. I think I was also always rather too cynical about power and those who wield it to relate to the positivism of Star trek (N.G at least) which I always suspected was really saying insn’t the U.S. wonderful. I preferred stories about noble rebels. Interesting that British Sci-fi tended to make heroes of those who defy power while the U.S. series made heroes of those who defended it. (with exceptions of course, and am happy to be proven wrong.)

@blenkinsopthebrave That is an excellent quote and I might have to borrow it. I am involved in a Cult Tv blog for community broadcasting and next month we are discussing original Star Trek. That quote so eloquently expresses my view of S.T.

We will get to Dr Who. The “Club” did a first recording last Thursday and it was cut short by a fake family crisis. (Long, funny but irrelevant story.) We discussed The Goodies. I was surprised at how many younger generation fans there are for such an old series.

Ellison was creative consultant for Babylon Five. He voiced the computer in one episode.

We are about as series ahead at the moment but I suspect you will both soon overtake us. Our viewing is rather sporadic. Last night we watched Under the Lake and Before the Flood.

I always enjoy watched the Day of the Doctor. IT was brilliantly done. We often follow it with The Five-ish Doctors Reboot which is delightful.

@winston Yes just today our idiot government voted for a new tax system that benefits the rich at the cost of public education and health care. Think I need to do more gardening, only right now that is hardly cheering. It is mid winter and the river is still dry. We are clearly heading into drought conditions. I fear for my garden. that is why I need Dr Who.
