Hello all, just a quick visit. This is again about Radio.
As you know, or should by now, I listen to a lot of stuff on BBC Radio 4 Extra. Today I heard a wonderful play by Al Smith called Life Lines (Omnibus) first dramatised for Radio this year.
If any of you have been fortunate enough to watch Ambulance UK or Australia this series is the same, with subtle differences. Absolutely superb, especially the story abut a bitch called Nigel – actually all of them are wonderful.
I urge you to take some time and listen to this .

As you know, I too am a Moffat fan. However, I don’t dislike CC because he isn’t Moffat, but because he is Chibnall and I never liked his writing. SM’s sometimes complex stories were right up my street, they made me think and didn’t preach politics, or what I should believe – unless it was subtlety done of course.

But it’s a matter of personal preference. I’m a Moffat fan ( here’s looking at you @miapatrick ) and I’d rather be dazzled by some brilliant writing, rather than sit around noodling up semi-nonsense.
It’s just me, though. Don’t think I’m calling out the show or saying you should feel like I do. This is just what I happen to want from fiction – and it’s not like I get it from any other TV or movies either. Mostly I read.

I had a look for this. For a start it should be 12 episodes a year. Split it up? The man is bonkers!
He should try not hogging the writing, like RTD (although he was fun to watch) and giving more writers a chance as Steven Moffat did.
I did read that he was considering leaving, whinging on about being disappointed with the show? Ahhhh ..diddums!
JW denies going with him.
As for the American shows pumping out 22 episodes of whatever, doesn’t mean they are quality. As SM was heard to say when Elementary was mentioned, (Re Sherlock) he preferred quality to quantity.
As you know, I haven’t seen any of this series, so I couldn’t possibly comment on the quality. However I agree with you. No surprises there. *grins*

If I like the characters, find them interesting and care about what happens to them, that’s all I need. If I don’t like a film, play or book, I don’t bother to work out why, I simply go on to the next one.
In short I enjoy being entertained. If I were taking an exam, then perhaps I’d need to analyse the subject.
Good thing we aren’t all alike. *grins*

Such a sensible approach and I cannot fault you on that. Unfortunately analysis of films, stories etcetera, has always been a mystery to me, I simply can’t do it.
A friend (teacher) once told me that she could teach me how to analyse what I read or saw, but remembering how many times she had looked forward to a novel or a film, and after analysing it found it fell short of expectations – I turned her down. Where’s the fun in that? I either love, like or detest it no “oh, it’s all right,” for me, I don’t want to take it apart and see how it ticks. Why I love, like or detest a thing is neither here nor there, I simply do.
It’s a flipping curse, and with this new series, I loathe the idea of a female Doctor, and dislike the actress, so I’m stuck in no man’s land.
Having every series since 2005, I can watch what I do approve of, even though touched with sadness.

Unfortunately, unlike yourself and everyone else on this forum, I cannot watch something I have a passion for objectively. Never have been good at it.
With me it’s all emotion, like a lot of women – note I said a lot of women, not all. If I love something, change is “abhorrent” to me, which is perhaps a strong word, but I feel strongly. I admire anyone who has the gift of objectivity.
Sack the writers’ is simply brainless, even though I much prefer Moffat and RTD, to each his own.

What surprises me, is why Chibnall didn’t really push the boat out and choose a black actress to play the Doctor? The General (Ken Bones) regenerated into a black women, so why not the Doctor?
Thandie Newton of Line of Duty, would have been good, she is a really good actress. Instead he stayed with a blonde white actress?
Perhaps it occurred to him, he asked and got knocked back, but I’d be very surprised.
However, that’s my opinion.

I found it so exciting when River, in one of the above, says “MY Doctor ” and “you know when you see and old photograph of someone you know, but they aren’t quite done yet.”And you know she means the 12th not the 11th Doctor. daft I know, but it still makes me tingle.

Well that’s a relief. Thane is usually so kind and, in some cases, patient.
To be fair I am a little embarrassed. Time, as the doctor will tell you, is the essence and I can’t always join you all (or is it all of you?) regularly. also, I can’t read long posts, I haven’t the time, so I tend to skim, which is what I did with thane’s. You could be right about the RTD fan, I shall have to read again – and thane’s.
Mostly I was referring to people I didn’t know, who approached me saying that they felt they were being preached at – a kind of “are you sitting comfortably children” thing. Obviously I cannot comment not having seen this series.
No, don’t smack him over the head Puro, I’ll do it if we ever meet. Only teasing. I’m so glad everything has been cleared up.

Whether we were responding to a troll or not, I wouldn’t know, didn’t sound like the usual. However, I agree with you
about values. As for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor, he was the most human of all. he felt everything and you could see that he did by his facial expressions. When nadole says to Bill :”That’s the Doctor for you. Never notices the tears.” he is quite wrong, he notices and tries in different ways to make things better.
As for Bill, apart from my personal favourite Rose, I found her to be very down to earth and endearing – real actually.
There again, this is simply my opinion.

I’ve just started re-watching all the Doctors from 2005 .

My OH wasn’t keen on Steven Moffat – at least he said that he wasn’t, so I thought I’d prove a point. We watched, Blink, Girl in the Fireplace, Silence in the Library, Forest of the Dead and Husbands of River song, all of which he really enjoys. Being a cruel person at heart (chuckle) I pointed out that all of them were written by Steven Moffat. Well, they are different he said. And there’s me thinking that it was only females who were supposed to be illogical.

Whilst here, can anyone tell me why Steven Moffat should feel the need to apologise for his new improved Daleks? They were wonderful.
Everything evolves doesn’t it even the sex of the Doctor, (apparently) so why not a new look Dalek. Granted they made the old ones look small, but I thought that was the point?
It wasn’t a mistake, and he didn’t need to apologise in my opinion.

Friends I have asked noticed who wrote the episodes, but not who directed them.
Chris Chibnall wrote 7 out of 11 of them, I do know that. Russell T. Davis used to hog it too, unlike Steven Moffat he gave others a chance. There again, RTD was a good writer.

My young friend – well she is half my age with a family – did the Christmas visit yesterday. She brought up the 13th series of which she has only be able to watch 3 episodes – not for reasons you may think but lack of time. Like me she wasn’t looking forward to a female Doctor, but unlike me, she watched out of curiosity.
So far, she said, it wasn’t bad, certainly not awful and as a Science fiction series which bungs in a Tardis now and then, it’s fine, just not Doctor Who. So, there you go.

The irony was that it’s an Australian film which won awards, and yet it’s three main stars weren’t Australian.
Terence Stamp was born in London, Guy Pierce in Cambridgeshire and Hugo Weaving in Nigeria.
Wonderful film, which should have won more awards.

I meant to say that the purse is the Tardis, and I have some news. It got itself noticed again this morning by a married couple -I assume they were married, but who knows nowadays. I got the usual question and naturally gave my usual answer.
They felt the complete opposite and loved it, saying that it was the first time they’d bothered to watch the programme. “What a shame, I replied, you’ve missed all the best series and better Doctors.” I left them with that thought. *big grin*

Just because you don’t agree with the majority, does not make you wrong – or right for that matter. *grins* As for scared of not agreeing with the main, I said that a while back. How many actually don’t care for the last series, but are afraid to admit it. In their favour however, I strongly believe that at least 95% mean what they say. Remember, you are entitled to have your say, everyone else does. *thumbs up*

On my birthday, I was given a DW purse, which I hang on my shoulder bag.
This has attracted quite a few people – some I knew some I didn’t – and was asked if I watched it and what i thought.
I told them, asking what they thought.
All the comments are listed in my recent post, and they did watch it.
Sadly it looks as if I shall be sitting on a cloud before they employ a Male Doctor again.

I haven’t watched any of this series, because I am against a female Doctor and I don’t like JW.
It has been said, that the show was a sort of spoof, a spin off, or a joke, because to them it isn’t Doctor Who.
However, everyone – it seems – approves of the series. so I’m in a minority.

I felt both the same, and the opposite — never knew, particularly in S8, which way he would jump, or how far he would go, but simultaneously there was no doubt whatever in my mind that this Doctor’s two hearts were positively molten with passion for decency, fairness, and kindness. That fixed the game in a way, because it would almost always bring him round in the end to a softer landing rather than a hard one.
Exactly, and you didn’t feel that you were being lectured and preached at either, which, I’ve been told, is how some viewers feel with this series.

All of the intros are good, at least i think so.
Blink? One of my favourites. However, the best one for me was Heaven Sent. Superb and imaginative writing, excellent acting – which would have been quite a challenge – sets and directing all superb. Both of course were by Steven Moffat. Ohh, and of course the music. Murray gold is a great loss
One companion would be much better, how many does this lead actress need for crying out loud?
Still cannot agree with you about Steven Moffat. Anyone who can weave a story to its conclusion over the years and actually make it join up, is a genius in my eyes.
However, we cannot all agree with each other and that’s all right. life is more interesting hearing others opinions.
My only question to you, why are you till watching if you dislike it so?

You know how I feel so I shall not labour the point. When they bring back a Male lead, I’ll start watching again.
But alien? No. More Indiana Jones than Starman, so far. Clearly, this is just fine for the current DW purpose. A bit dull for me, though, and I’m not seeing much potential in Whittacker for a blossoming of depths. But you never now . .
I’ve never seen any potential in JW, but most would not agree.
Oddly enough, I though PC’s Doctor was very approachable – depending on how you approached him. Although only fiction and an actor acting out that fiction, PC’s Doctor always made me feel safe. Strange isn’t it.

I cannot say Rubbish, because I haven’t watched any of the episodes, because I don’t like Jodie Whitaker or a female Doctor. However I had to smile because JW always IS her self, at least in everything I’ve seen her in. It’s a surprise to hear that she can actually be someone else
Sorry, I don’t agree about PC’s first series, everything that Steven Moffat wrote was good.
Good scripts yes, Steven Moffat scripts preferably, but there are good writers out there. Chibnall isn’t one of them alas. Out of the seven he wrote in other series, I only liked one.
Yes, they chose the wrong actor, they chose an actress. *grin*

As for personalities, I remember Steven Moffat saying that Peter Capaldi’s Doctor was a churning mass of emotions (words to that affect.) In my opinion he was right. His Doctor was the most human of all the Doctors. His grumpiness, dry humour and pretended nonchalance, are all human traits. The very act of hiding them, is too.
Peter Capaldi himself, insisted that the Doctor was an alien – not human – and thought quite differently to human beings. He did however say that the Doctor would fabricate himself at times to make him seem human. Thing is, he didn’t have to fabricated anything.
All in all, he was a wonderful Doctor, and many of us will miss him greatly.
