@nerys. I am doing the same, reading spoilers. I do love spoilers. I did not watch the final chibnell series. I gave up at the destruction of Gallifrey but I think there is every possibility the Master was lying. After all I wouldn’t trust anything that he/she says, ever. they are not know for their honesty. Jo Martin doc as a bi generation doctor would work and explains why she has a police box shaped Tardis, (kind of, with a bit of story jiggery pokery) whereas if she was a pre Hartnell Doctor it does not work as it was established, in the first episode and again in the Moffat years that the Tardis was fixed in that shape after Hartnell Doc stole it and landed it in London 1963.

this is probably nonsense as I am two episodes behind but on reading the review in the Guardian I wondered if Jo Martin doc is going to turn out to be the result of a bi generation that way she becomes canon while the overly complicated and “baggy” backstory is quietly forgotten? Personally I think that would be a good way of keeping what is good from the chibnell years without taking on the entire rewrite of who history.

I know I should not be theorising before watching and this has probably already been suggested so ap9logies. I have nto read all the posts either. Not really keeping up at the moment. It is a delayed pleasure.

@whohar I was just thinking that the Interstellar Song contest mirrors the Reality TV Planet at the end of RTD’s first series and it is more than time for a return of the pepper pots.  i like your theory.

@drwhonerdfrommars and @ps1l0v3y0u I suspect that RTD is just recycling the name but it would be brilliant if Belinda does turn out to be connected to Rani. Probably not her daughter as I think she would be too old. It can easily be written in a way that does not require familiarity with SJA though to those who have not watched that series I do recommend it. Some of the stories were a bit “naff” but the core characters made up for that. It is really a bit of a comfort watch.

that does indeed raise my spirits. I do hope that the hiatus is to enable Gatwi to do other projects without actually leaving the show as has been done before. He really needs three seasons. (the more the better)

@whohar It sounds promising but then I cannot help but be reminded that it is RTD saying that and he does have a tendency to go so OTT in seasons finals so I have reservations. I suspect that the final will tie up the last two or three seasons, going back to the incident with the salt at the edge of the universe. (at least I think that is what it was that let “all sorts of things into this universe. It has been a while since I watched that.)

Never thought I would be grateful to Trump for anything, but like Canadians right now I am, just a little. I shall certainly sleep better tonight. Really wasn’t expecting today’s election result. Would have liked to see the Greens and Independents get more seats however.

@blenkinsopthebrave. you make a good point. When Moffat recommended keeping Jenny, the Doctor’s Daughter alive it was because the more characters, villains and locations that you have tucked up in the canon the more there is for future writers to draw upon. RTD is drawing on past stories to enrich his current writing in the latest episode for example. it enables writers to have something to play with other than the three big bads, “Daleks, Cybermen and the Master” and enriches the other all universe; something that despite its long vintage Dr Who is much in need of. (hence my grumbling about the destruction of Gallifrey and probably why Moffat brought it back. In a universe that has only one recurring planet in it, earth, having two more, Gallifreya and Skaro, (both destroyed by RTD and restored by Moffat) gives the universe a tad more substance. (but I do harp on an old theme. Apologies)

@whohar Mrs Flood is the Master? Might be. she is mischievous enough and certainly ambiguous in terms of motive. He does point out that he is the last of his kind. Last time he said that he was proven wrong. RTD does seem to be repeating a lot of ideas and themes.

I just hope she ends by confessing that the destruction of Gallifrey was all a lie. .

We are running a week behind with viewing so watched Lux last night. I really did not expect to like it. The premise of the story annoys me, cartoon character coming to life. I also knew that the S/O wouldn’t like it because he dislikes the trickster type characters. Despite disliking the central premise I really enjoyed it. The breaking of the fourth wall won me and the reference to Galaxy Quest elevated it from a 6.5 out of ten to a solid 7.

As to bonkers theories I don’t have any.I am just enjoying the crazy roller coaster ride for now. it does seem Mind Robber-ish but I want that to be the case and so expect it won’t be. The new, new Dr Who universe is full of crazy impossible beings or forces. I would prefer Who stories to be a little more grounded but it is fun.

@winston so sad to read about the destruction and so sorry about your garden. That is heartbreaking and I grieve for every tree that falls. I despair for this planet. One feels so helpless, watching what is happening, unable to do anything meaningful to change the direction we are heading in, not even voting helps as both parties are equally unable to make a difference. (well one party does, in the wrong way) All we can do is hope for a miracle now and that is getting more and more desperate.

@dentarthurdent. I never tire of re’ watching my old favourites. I am currently watching an old BBC series from 1976 that I first watched when I was in high school. In terms of script, acting, filming, and historical accuracy it holds up. video quality less so but one puts up with that for the sake a great series.

Good Omens is always fun to watch. I think it too will stand the test of time. (despite the antics of one of the writers)

@thane16 I keep hearing about Severance. It does sound very interesting. Is on my to watch list.

@thane16 and @nerys. I have yet to watch season 2 of Wolf Hall but have read all the books so am really looking forward to it. It is a well worn story, as Nerys says, but H.M. manages to make it fresh and interesting and the acting and direction is as excellent as one would hope, though no longer expect sadly. .

Only a few more days to Dr Who is back. the second trailer does look promising. I was less enthused by the first, i think it was aimed at a different audience. The second was more tailored to fans. I expect to love some episodes and not really take to others and that is fine. I  prefer that to the series all being just meh. (as in the Chibnell years)

@nerys. Have not been watching much lately. The eldest and his fiance are currently camping in the old living room in front of the air con because their room is too hot to sleep in and she starts work early so we have to be quite at night. We watched Dune Prophecy which was ok and Star Wars Skeleton Crew which was also Ok and then the S/O put on Detectorists which we have watched before. (at least three times in my case) because  I was feeling a bit down. It is akin to a massage for the soul. It shows ordinary people just being nice to each other with a back ground of stunning nature shots.It is perfect comfort viewing.

@winston. I agree that the 50th set a standard that will probably never be matched. It was just perfection. Still these specials were fun and it was lovely to see Donna again and for her memory to be restored. She deserved that.

Reading these threads reminds me of how much I need to re watch these episodes. I have not yet had the chance to re watch any of the more recent episodes and right now I do feel very much in need of some Dr Who. It is an essential antidote to reality.

We had some help with news avoidance this week. Someone sabotaged an optic fibre cable leaving a entire region without internet for over 24 hours.

@nerys I have been reading a lot too, I now keep a book beside my laptop so in idle moments I read rather than scroll through the news repeatedly. Not having internet for a day didn’t really bother me too much.

Talking of which we recently watched the new Wallace and Gromit movie and that was a pure delight. It ranks with the original trilogy. When it finished everyone in the room wanted to immediately rewatch it.

Merry Christmas all. (there are still a few days to go..) I really enjoyed it and it was just we needed after a rather “intense” Christmas Day. Warm and fun. The family were all engaged. So nice to be watching all together again. the ending was a bit sickly but not sure quite what the religious connotations of that are.

@dentarthurdent the Red Dwarf quotes made me laugh aloud and I have seen that episode so many times, “everybody is dead Dave”. It is the droll way he says it. We quote that often, along with, “there’s an emergency going on” in that same flat voice.

I really need to do a re watch of the last two episodes. As usual I think my reaction to the ending is influenced by all the wonderful bonkers theorising that goes on here. Nothing could ever match up. On third or forth viewing I can usually appreciate the episodes for what they are and not see them through the filter of my expectations. I was hoping that Susan would be Susan but at least Susan the granddaughter was talked about. It is all about continuity or rather the lack of in Dr Who. she is a timelord, she can regenerate. there are infinite story possibilities there as yet untapped.

Agreed on first watch it was middling. RTD has done many a worse series finale but overall series as a good start and I am so excited for the Christmas Special.

@ps1l0v3y0u Not yet. Been busy all day recording a podcast on Dr Who, the Twin Dilemma so it can only be a vast improvement.. I am introducing one Doctor each year. We only watch one episode, (thankfully in this case)  though usually the rest of the gang watch the remaining episodes of the chosen story before recording. We did not put them through that ordeal this time round.

Any impressions on the trailer? Though I must say I usually find trailers very misleading, perhaps because they are not really aimed at fans..

@dentarthurdent. I was looking forward to reading your review on this. We had to persuade some family member to keep watching after “babies” and “chord” and this was the payoff. After this episode they were back. It has everything I want from Dr Who, good story, good acting and a dash of politics thrown in.  It is the kind of story Moffat does so well, small, intense but  not end of the universe stuff.

@dentarthurdent  We did not choose to drive a Merc. I think that was the only car available that was large enough for our needs. We were a family of five and had bought up on toys in Germany so had more baggage than was sensible by then.

I think our worst experience was getting stuck in Sunday afternoon traffic at Heathrow. It was when I returned to the UK two years later with the boys, from Sweden I should make clear. The S.O had a one year attachment there. We spent the week travelling and he flew over to join us for the weekend and hired a car for the two days. This time it was something smaller and more sensible. Anyway he had to fly out on the Sunday night. His ticket was in the boot and we weren’t entirely sure of the time so thought we would head to the airport an hour earlier than we thought we needed to be there. We didn’t know about Sunday afternoon traffic jams. It took over an hour to get a few hundred metres into the airport. I dropped him at the terminal, having missed the flight and then returned the car. By which time he called to tell me that he had (conveniently) got the flight time entirely wrong and arrived just before the gate closed. Needless to say we were all in need of a stiff drink by then.

When I was in the U.K in 2005 I had to navigate sans maps which was interesting. We were at the end of a six week touring holiday with the three boys and the S?O had to do a “return to duty” which meant flying out to Sweden for a couple of days. I had left all the driving to him and planned to spend those days at the camping ground nearest to the place where we were staying and catch buses. I had no intention of driving in England any more than I could help. But.. we were staying in Cheddar Gorge YHA and I had to drive him to Bristol airport at about 6 am. We left the boys asleep there and headed off. Got to the airport ok. It was early and there was no traffic on the road. Waved goodbye and got back in the car, a large and unwieldy black Merc’ and headed back. It was a clear sky morning the pale lemon sun falling on green fields, mist clinging in soft curtains to the hollows and dips. by the time I got back to the YHA I was really enjoying the drive. Got the boys up, fed them and we set off for that camping ground. Only I thought we should at least see Cheddar Gorge first so we took the turn to do so. By the time we were out of Cheddar Gorge I was lost and realised that ten year olds don’t read maps well. Could not pull over, English lanes don’t allow for that so just had to keep driving but it was a lovely sunny day and the Somerset landscape was beautiful. I kept driving, figuring that I would eventually get a chance to stop and consult the map. Before that happened however I saw a road sign that pointed to Exeter. Exeter I thought. That is near Cornwall. I love Cornwall. What the hell. We’ll go to Cornwall.

I did at one stage back into a hedge which was more solid than I expected and dented the back panel of the car but we managed to push it back in place before returning the car.

Next time I returned to the UK with the boys, two years later, I decided to catch buses rather than hire a car and I am glad that I did even if it limited our travel choices at times. It felt less like being a tourist and more like being visitors. I think it gave the boys more of a feel for the places we were travelling in. (I hope that distinction makes sense.) On that occasion we ended up in Bristol and got to visit the Dr Who Experience.

@dentarthurdent It wasn’t a good first episode and I fear it turned away viewers which is a shame.

I agree with your comments, like the new Tardis interior. it gives lots of space for the Doctor to run about in and this Doctor is very physically expressive and that works. It is a little too minimalist though so not my favourite which will probably always be 12s. I don’t think that interior can be bettered. Lots of bookcases, a little retro without overdoing that. This new interior is very digital age. It doesn’t look very comfortable.

Greetings all.

Sorry for not posting for so long. I have been trying to keep up with all the discussions but always seem to be either too busy or too tired or I start a response but never finish it.

@ps1l0v3y0u It would be so cool for Susan to reappear but she is a timelord and can regenerate. Maybe in fairness Carol Ann Ford should be the older Susan who has spent her life on earth, trying to work out how to get back too the Tardis and adventures with “Grandfather” and is due for regeneration, thus introducing a new Susan.  (I was never a fan of C.A.F. but I liked the idea of the character.)

So we have just returned from a trip to the Flinders, tried ‘bush camping”. It was an interesting experience. We arrived at about 3.00 pm, it was nearing 40c, unexpected in early October, the flies were thicker than the dust, and there was only a thin lacework of shade thrown by a couple of spindly gums. We had to wait to dust to put up the tents then we found that the blow up mattress could not be blown up, so the S/O was grumpy, and the BBQ was missing the hose, so the S/O and two sons were grumpy and we could not get out of the camp ground because it is too dangerous to drive at dusk due to ‘roos and the road in and out was so corrogated that we did not want to drive over it any more than necessary. We did manage to rustle up a very modest camp fire, and were able to open up the tents for ventilation. The flies eventually dissipated and we tried to ignore the little shining lights reflecting in our head torches that were indeed spider eyes. We did have a lovely view of the rangers however and we succeeded in putting up the tent without any swearing. So small wins.

the following morning we drove around to the other side of the ranges, the scenic side. Turns out we were camping on the desert side. It had rained and there were roos all along the road drinking water from the edge of the bitumen. Emus were out grazing in the wet grass and peregrine falcons were drifting overhead. It was more than compensation for the previous night.

And now I am home and looking at the lists of jobs to be done left on my keyboard. Hey ho. I will deal with them all tomorrow.

@dentarthurdent. Gosh how the year has flown. It seems like a couple of years since Star Beast. I barely remember it. Must be due for a re watch. Reading your review i do recall disliking the burning fissures in the street, very silly, and the pacing was hectic but otherwise this episode was fun. I always liked Donna and felt that her loosing everything she had gained from being with the Doctor was a shabby ending for her character so it was nice to see that restored. Donna finally got the story resolution she deserved.

You did well to rescue the Doctor from the DC merch. I have never found any Dr Who merch at charity shops, (called opp shops in oz) I did find two Terry Pratchett books yesterday amid boxes of books and dvds that were donated to the librayr/youth centre so that was a find. There was one Dr Who book but it wasn’t a very interesting one so I left it. There are more boxes of dvds to be unpacked so I will be keeping an eye out for Dr Who dvds.

@dentarthurdent. Pizza with the lot is a good description, and by the lot they mean everything, pineapple, olives, capsicum, every kind of meat ever thrown at a pizza, any kind of pizza.

I did watch it but it is just a tangled mess. Was there a story in there, I could not locate it.  I would have been nice to see some of those old faces if they had any reason to be there other than just as faces. He might as well have just shown their portraits as none of them really did anything as far as i could tell. All of the actors in it deserved better. (even Graham) J.W. definitely deserved a better send of.

@blenkinsopthebrave I do like Wallace and Gromit. The original three films have a lot of happy associations for me, good times at work, (few and far between) old friends and of course the boys when they were young. Our eldest was given a Wallace soft toy for his second birthday and he loved that toy so much.  Still have it of course. It was later joined by a Gromit toy, then a penguin and a sheep. We also collected the little plastic figures from cereal packets.They are lined up on a bookcase. Oh and the eldest now how a set of spaceships on his bedroom door. (Almost as much Wallace and Gromit merch as Dr Who merch in this house.)

@dentarthurdent I did not think it would be but some people are very sensitive when it comes to spoilers. The question of what is or isn’t a spoiler has led to many a heated family argument in our household.

A Christmas Special written by Moffat is really more of a present than a spoiler.

As to meaning the opposite of what one says, we are currently doing driving lessons with son2 and constantly saying the opposite of what we mean, “left, no I mean right,” , “turn, no keep going.” (We have currently done about 20 hours out of 65. As people who rarely venture beyond the boundaries of our provincial town it is proving challenging.

@whohar I did not know that. They worked so well together and shared a birthday along with their favourite enemy. (Was the Master in the McCoy series? I have only watched the later ones.)  A now belated Happy Birthday to Sylvester and Sophie.

I know that several Doctors have birthdays in April but that is due to personal bias. My S/O shares a birthday with David Tennant.

@winston we watch the Christmas episodes every Christmas too in order. We usually start in early December but never seem to get through them all so our Christmas sounds a lot like yours only in our case it is usually hitting 40c and we are worrying about whether the garden will make it through another blasting summer and hoping there will not be too many bushfires.Doctor Who is a welcome relief from all that. I particularly like the episodes that feature snow.

I am really looking forward to this year’s special. Moffat and Christmas go together. He does whimsical well. (I am currently watching Douglas is Cancelled. Not whimsical but very Moffat.)

@winston I liked the cat people in Gridlock too. And kittens!! and Father Dougal though when I first watched Gridlock I had only seen him in My Hero. Not a great comedy series but the boys liked it when they were young.

@dentarthurdent. The only specials I am not keen on were those at the end of Tennant’s first run. Perhaps I should re watch the End of Time. It might be deserving of a second chance.

I am a fan of all the Christmas Specials though I didn’t mention them as they are mostly Moffat’s and I love Dickens so the Dickensian elements are fine with me. Last Christmas is probably the best of them. Husbands of River Song maybe the worst. It does not start of well but that scene on the spaceship when she realises that the Doctor is indeed standing there next to her gets me every time. It makes the episode worth watching.

RTD’s Christmas Specials were pretty good too. I disliked the giant stompy robot crushing half of London that nobody ever heard of in The Next Doctor. Liked the episode, except from some wacky costuming, up to that point. Why no mention of something that destructive in history? Moffat gets a pass for the dinosaur in the Thames because it is explained. Maybe not a particularly convincing explanation but at least Moffat tries.

@dentarthurdent. I looked back to see what I said previously about this episode and found that I did not. That is not a reflection of my view of the episode. I often fail to comment partly because I get overwhelmed by the discussion and feel I have nothing to add. I have only watched this episode once so going from memory, Really liked Ruth/doc. She had the authority that J.W. lacked. So like so many Chib era stories, there were good parts, there was potential but overall it just did not hold together. I think you hit the mark with “Throw everything at it”, and so the narrative ends up being incoherent. Plot lines are set up but never satisfyingly resolved. It felt like bits of a good episode mixed into narrative spaghetti.

@dentarthurdent I like The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. Trees that grow baubles, Manny, and likeable kids, especially the Doctor. Matt Smith worked well with children. He played well to the childish side of the Doctor.

I would have voted Love and Monsters as RTD’s worst (avoiding rockets) however I think the first two episodes of this most recent series would be contenders for that award. I agree it started out well with the fan club. It just went downhill sharply. The rest of RTD’s are generally good. I did not like the specials, and really didn’t like the Tennant finals. (I don’t even remember the names of those because I have never re-watched. Tried and gave up.)

I do like making lists. Had to refresh my memory of every series and make notes. So series by series,

Series 1 Dalek with an honourary mention for Bad Wolf.

Series 2 School Reunion because Sarah Jane Smith. This is in my view one of the worst series. There just were no other decent episodes except the obvious. (Girl in the Fireplace)

Series 3 Some “bangers” in this series. Human Nature/Family of Blood are outstanding. Gridlock is a close runner up, and Shakespeare Code was fun.

Series 4 Turn Left. Lots of good episodes, Fires of Pompeii, Planet of the Ood, Midnight.

Series 5 Vincent. Vampires of Venice is not bad. This series has the worst episode penned by Moffat, the Beast Below. (Not as bad as RTD’s worst)

Series 6. I could not choose any one not written by Moffat, I have never really liked The Doctor’s Wife so maybe The Girl who Waited.

Series 7 Cold War.

Series 8 Another solid season with one notable exception. Hard to chose a “best” but will settle for Mummy on the Orient Express because Jelly Babies with Flatline a very close runner up. Into the Dalek and Time Heist also very good.

Series 9 Face the Raven, followed by Under the Lake two parter.

Series 10 Eaters of Light. then Oxygen and Thin Ice.

Series 11 It Takes You Away. Love a fiord. Demons of the Punjab wasn’t bad. Witchfinders was silly but fun.

Series 12 Villa Diadati was watchable and featured Mary Shelley. But by now the bar is low as @dentarthurdent observed.

Series 13. I’d given up so nill.

Series 14 Yay, there is competition again. 73 Yards probably but Rogue would be a contender and Dot and Bubble is also worthy of a mention. I have not yet rewatched so this might change.

I just read @ps1l0v3y0u ‘s comment in the Website thread and now I get it. Innuendo. Yes. It goes with Captain Jack really. Captain Jack, talks in double entendre. (Most of which probably goes whooshing over my head too.)

Doctor Dances/Empty Child are classics. I think they are now old enough to have acquired that status. Nearly twenty years since Rose brought Who back to our screens. (I am keeping an eye on the date because the podcast I produce features tv from 20 years ago and before.)

I really should be using the quiet time to catch up on the most recent series threads, but RL has been hectic of late. If I am not busy then I am feeling guilty for not being busy. The weather is warming up too so I have been trying to do some gardening before it gets too hot. Possums have been wrecking havoc out there. it looks as though a Tardis has crash landed in one area. In fact overall our backyard resembles Amy’s overgrown garden.

Not us. We have just finished re watching the first Matt Smith series and are now onto the second series, The Doctor’s Wife tonight. I always miss things on first watch too.
