@mudlark Agree the babies were creepy. I don’t think the cgi on the faces worked. I would have preferred if they talked a kind of baby language that only the Doctor could understand, given he speaks baby. I didn’t hate the bogeyman as much as I thought I would.

@vickymallard. Bill also panicked about stepping on butterflies so that was a nice touch I thought. I also liked the beginning. The interaction between the Doctor and Ruby really carries the episode. (Makes up for those plot holes pointed out by Mudlark)

@juniperfish. I was thinking that but I also thought that Danny and Orson were Susan’s grandchildren so I tend to look for Susan descendants everywhere.

@scaryb. It was such a good post that I read half the repeat one before I realised.

As to “woke crap” well I welcome a return to the sincere politics of RTDs writing. His writing for Who at least, has a tendency to be “bombastic” but his character development is excellent. I disliked aspects of both episodes, the creepy cgi babies, the music notes, but the characters and dialogue carried me through. It was still enjoyable and the family are all still talking about it today.

On writing that I realised that both episodes are about story and “created realities”. The swirling music notes are very reminiscent of the original magic toymaker or the story teller in The Mind Robber. The snot monster is reminiscent of the creations in Mind Robber.

Just regarding the cost of playing Beatles songs I guess things have changed in the last thirty years because I am sure that Goodnight Sweetheart would not have been paying huge royalties in the 90s.

Wondering if the Margaret Lockwood reference was meaningful but can’t see anything on her IMDB that would suggest any link. The Lady Vanishes?

@miapatrick. Hi nice to see you back. Hope all is well with you. I agree the “music makes us better” concept is questionable. Armies march to music. Ride of the Valkyries springs to mind. Music can be and frequently is misused to manipulate. Buy at least we didn’t have to endure five minutes of moralising about it, so that is a plus.

Family members liked my suggestion that Ruby might be linked to Susan. It is a stretch but it is more than time that we found out what became of Susan and a lot is being made of him being the last timelord. Last time RTD did that it signalled the return of the Master so I am think this time it is signalling either the Rani or Susan..

Reference to the Rani and to Susan. I know that I have a bad track record here, always looking for a possible return of Susan but I am theorising again that Susan might be going to make a reappearance finally.

Likewise we might finally have a return to the Rani or is RTD simply teasing, throwing in random references just to fuel our bonkers theorising?

You must be in a mellow mood indeed. There are good aspects to this episode, speaking from memory as it isn’t one I re watch. I like Yaz’ family and think it a great shame that they were recurring characters. the rest was meh, very meh and not one to appeal to Australians.  I also found the moralising not just heavy handed, Chibs style, but also a bit confused but maybe that is just because I wasn’t paying enough attention or not sympathising with the spiders or relating to the “don’t kill poor harmless spiders” message. (Far too many redbacks and white tails around here for that.)

I agree with most of your summary of the episodes. I did like Demons of the Punjab in part because it reminded me of a novel which I studied in Post Colonial lit and like that novel I did not feel it needed to comment on the Raj. It was telling a different story. However it wasn’t really Dr Who. It was good but something else. It Takes You Away is probably my favourite episode in the series, despite the weird frog which lets it all down a bit.

@dentarthurdent I also liked Yaz’s family. IT was a shame we never met them again. RTD would have kept them as recurring characters. So would Moffat. It was a missed opportunity. Hated every other aspect of the episode especially the spiders. (Australian.)

Witchfinders was fun and I liked the use of shadow puppetry. It is also one of hte few episodes I remember from series 1 alone with Rosa, Punjab and it takes you.. The rest I have erased from memory. The stories were below par.

Of the following series I think the only ones I would re watch would be Villa Diadati and the one with Jo only her TArdis being in the shape of a police box annoyed me because it stomps on established lore which is that it takes that shape after Doc1 steals it. A little continuity in Dr Who would not go amiss.

I had stopped watching Dr Who by the Baker2 years and feel that I did not miss much. I was biased against C.B because of other roles I had seen him in. He was really good at portraying unpleasant characters. I think he was poorly cast as the Doctor and certainly the production design, direction and script writing did not do him any favours. I considerably softened my view of him after watching The Five-ish Doctors Reboot but I have not gone back and watched those episodes however,,.. however, this year I am introducing a C.B. story to the podcast team and would appreciate advice on which I should pick. I don’t know as yet as to whether I should chose one of the best or the worst.

It is about my turn to bring something really bad to the table. Every year we have one “dud” that we review. Last year it was the Star War’s Holiday Special and I don’t think we will ever do worse than that..

@dentarthurdent and @winston I second the MP3 player suggestion. When I was in icu I had four cd’s and listened to them over and over. The music really helped but I also read a lot, all books I was familiar with starting with Pride and Prejudice which made me laugh, I think I owe my life to Mrs Bennett aka Alison Steadman, followed by Lord of the Rings. Audio books would also be good and radio plays if you can get hold of them. Might be a good time to listen to some Big Finish productions.

@winston the “Victorian Library” was my favourite Tardis interior. I do like this one but I certainly wouldn’t want to live in it or record in it. It would be very echoey. A messy house is great for recording. (I have an excuse..) The whiteness does have a kind of 70 futuristic look and the colours improve it a lot. I would like to see a few bookcases though and I do miss the old hatstand.

I enjoyed trying to work out an explanation for Danny?Orson. I love a narrative puzzle, the word equivalent of Mr Squiggle, a reference that probably only Australians of my generation will get. It was a kids tv show where the puppet with a pencil nose would be given a canvas with random “squiggles” on it and they would connect them to make a picture. The trouble is that my explanation for Danny/Orson was so convoluted that I don’t really remember it all now. Must be buried somewhere probably on the Listen thread. Must hunt it down. Something useful to do when I am procrastinating.

I once came up with a very complicated theory to explain Orson, not as a descendant of Danny’s but his twin brother. There are a few hints that Danny has no family, the orphanage having trouble finding family etc, So my theory, which i have now mostly forgotten was that Danny had time travelled in infancy. He and Orson were descendants of one of the Doctor’s former companions, possibly Susan who is another loose thread. She left the toy solider with Danny and Clara returns it to the Doctor so it is circular.

@dentarthurdent I agree that Bill’s fate was the most tragic. Clara’s fate happened as a result of her own choices, sad yes but Bill’s was as a result of trust betrayed. The Doctor should know better than to promise that he can keep his companions safe. He cannot. The scenes of Bill in the barn are heartbreaking. Nardole in his handling of the situation also acquires a noble dimension. He is so much more than just comic relief.

Hi @dentarthurdent. Your swimming sounds lovely. We are a long drive from any good beaches. Mostly to the west of us is mangroves though I believe there are some ok ones heading up the coast a bit. Nothing compared to the magistic wonder of Piha beach however. I loved the beaches we visited on Eyre Peninsula last winter. Too cold for swimming but I took some nice photos which make me happy.

I have not watched any “Who” for a while. We are currently re watching Blackadder. I have to choose an episode for a podcast and as it has been years since we last watched it I thought some research was required. The “monks’ trilogy is one that improves on re watching I find, often the case with Moffat’s scripts. there is always so much to unpick, so many layers that one doesn’t always appreciate on first viewing.

@winston thank you the concern. We are thankfully safe from fires here. We have had a relatively cool summer which is odd though I guess we are not getting the cool nights which brings up the average temperature. Weather patterns have changed. It is very dry though. I am getting tired of watering and  I fear we have a long wait for rain.

It sounds as though you have had a very dry winter which does not bode well. Hopefully it will be like our summer, cooler than feared.

We replaced the hard-drive on my laptop and it is working again. This time we bought a ssd which hopefully will less prone to being damaged as there is clearly some problem with the laptop itself. It is so disruptive having to move between machines. it put me behind with so many things.(like posting on here )

Who scrips definitely have to work for the first time viewer as well as the aged fan. (like myself.) A friend is currently introducing the new stories to her daughter, who refers to them as “old Who”. She is loving it. I don’t think she will ever watch the old stories. The ones she has seen have failed to catch her attention.

@dentarthurdent. Jackie and Mickey definitely deserve credit for elevating every episode they were in. (Sadly Noel Clarke has somewhat soured things by his behaviour off screen so I am talking of Mickey the character.) Camille Coduri was excellent bringing warmth and humour to the role of Jackie. RTD did so  well with the family background for both Rose and Donna and I think that contributed to the success of both characters. He did not do so well with Martha, maybe because her family had to serve a narrative function but they always felt quite two dimensional in comparison.

It will soon be twenty years since Rose aired. I recall my joy on watching it. After the movie in the nineties I had very low expectations but after watching Rose I knew that Dr Who had been given a new lease of life. It was different from old Who too but in good ways. IT was clear from the start that RTD understood what Dr Who needed to be.

Our youngest member of ‘cult Tv Club, (9yrs old) is currently watching through AGWho essentially for the first time and was awed by Blink. I think she was both terrified and loving it. We did a podcast on what we all watched last year and she talked about Dr Who which was great, it it wasn’t me for a change. It was generally agreed that Moffat’s early episodes were his best though others in the group are not such fans of his work as show-runner. I loved his complex twisty plotting but other prefer the simpler narrative style of RTD. Either way I think we are all hoping that he will write some scripts for RTD. I hope that Matheison also comes back to the Who camp.

@dentarthurdent I would agree with Jamie Mathieson with that ranking. Mummy on th Orient Express is a fantastic episode and Flatline is also flawless in terns of plotting and scripting. Girl who Died was by far and away the weakest but I suspect he was writing to specification rather than his own concept.

@winston I feel your pain. I had to get my tech support, (otherwise referred to as the S/O) to re install Windows on my aging laptop in the hope that it might actually work. It had started corrupting files. It has taken the better part of two week, copying everything off the hard-drive and then reinstalling it all and setting up slide shows etc. Not sure the Laptop is working any better.

I hope you are able to either get the computer fixed or find a replacement soon. The internal hard-drive should probably be fine. It is probably either motherboard or power supply that has failed.

@dentarthurdent. Really should rewatch Oxygen. For no reason at all it is not an episode that we tend to re watch. I will have a look at your review. I suspect I have a lot of posts to catch up on.

Well finally got all the recalcitrant cats together, (including the actual feline one) to watch this episode. We have been waiting since Christmas and one or other is either out or asleep or busy..

It was a lot of fun, not one of the best Christmas Specials but not one of the worst either. Very Labyrinth, which isn’t a bad thing, though not sure I would enjoy that so much in a standard episode. The rules are always a little more relaxed in Christmas Specials.

There were a few questions, who is Ruby Sunday? when is “mavity” going to be corrected, and who is the neighbour.

This episode is clearly setting up the series arc.

@vickymallard. Welcome btw. I envy you a little, watching these episodes for the first time. There is an episode of Red Dwarf where Kryten asks Dave to wipe his memory of Agatha Christie books so he can read them again for the first time. There are a few books and tv series, and Dr Who episodes I would chose to have wiped from memory so I can watch again, “for the first time”. This two parter would be high on that list.

At the same time watching the Doctor’s first meeting with River is a pure pleasure, knowing what is to come.

A bit belated by Happy Christmas everyone.

We have been very busy, as always. I always try to do about ten times as much as humanly possible, much to the annoyance of the s/o. We have now celebrated “second Christmas”, which to all involved including extra household members if the Christmas Day that really counts. Now that it is all done I don’t quite know what to do with myself. Relax? What is that??

We finally caught up with the second and third specials and I have lots of thoughts brewing and tomorrow when I have caught up on sleep will hop onto the relevant threads. We are yet to watch the Christmas Special, perhaps Friday when everyone is around. It took a lot of persuasion but we finally got the entire family to sit down and watch the specials together yesterday.

There were plenty of Dr Who related gifts this year. The eldest got a Dr Who Magic the Gathering card pack. Which reminds me a sad note for fans of old Who. Richard Franklin, (Captain Yates, third Doctor era) passed away on Christmas Day. There were a couple of Tardis pen holders, and a Dr Who book.

@dentarthurdent Back to the great Terry Pratchett. the S/O and I were discussing Hogfather last night, it (ie the tv adaptation) being one of my standard pre Christmas watches, and he made the point that Death’s granddaughter is called Susan and it struck me that indeed this could be a nod to Dr Who. Death is very Doctorish after all which is perhaps why he is such an appealing character.

It would hardly be surprising if T.P was influenced by Dr Who given the time he was writing.

We still haven’t watched the new episode so are keeping you company with that, though we are planning to watch tomorrow night and I have a tin of home made Jammy Dodgers ready and waiting and a bag of English Jelly Babies in the pantry, not to mention the fishfingers in the freezer. All is set. We just cannot manage to get the household together at the same time.

@mudlark that sounds interesting. I have yet to witness the return of the “round things” but like the doctor, I do like them and using them as portals sounds like a promising concept. I always feel that the Tardis has great narrative potential rarely utilised. Ruth Madeley was so goon in Years and Years. The character was re’written for her too because she impressed RTD so much in the audition.

@translatorcircuit  I don’t mind less episodes if it the quality of the remaining nine is of the highest standard so they had better all be good episodes…

@mudlark I think it is an old English or British term found as you note in ballads and songs. Early colonists in Oz would refer to Sydney as “Sydney Town” so maybe it originates in the home counties and London. (Origin of many original convicts sent to N.S.W.)  I am certain that I have encountered that usage in older Australian literature.

@blenkinsopthebrave.Sadly Dr Who and the ABC have parted company. End of an era. We will be able to watch it. we are waiting to gather the family which is far more difficult than herding cats. The cat is here all the time pestering us for attention. The offspring are far more recalcitrant. They are excited to watch the episode together however and keen to make an ‘event” of it. It is not often that the entire household gathers around the tv these days.

@dentarthurdent We have not watched the new story either though we are planning to do so later in the week. (Son and his gf have Disney + so we don’t need the eye patches to do so)

We are going to watch it as a household, something we stopped during half way through the first Chibnell/J.W. series. They drifted off one by one then but are all keen again now that RTD is at the helm again and there will be jelly babies, jammy dodgers, (home made) and fish fingers and custard, just like old times.

I have a couple more pages to read of Reaper Man. It is my “handbag book” which means i am mostly reading it while waiting in supermarket car parks for family members to do their shopping which feels remarkably apt. Also a month or so ago while I was part way through the book a shopping trolley turned up on our street and ended up in our house. It felt as though the story was real and happening here. (I believe the trolley is now back where it belongs)

And only a few days to go. I am beginning to get a little bit excited. Feels rather like back in 2005 only now I have a lot more memorabilia to spread around. (Our table is still covered with daleks, tardis and mini fig’ doctors from when we did the recording. There are even sticks of celery because we were watching a fifth doctor story.)

Talking of which we just did Black Orchid which was not overly popular. One of our group was horrified at having to watch at least five minutes of cricket. They really do stretch it out. I have yet to edit the podcast and as there is over an hour of recordings might take a bit though I would like to get it up by the 23rd. (We always do Dr Who in November.)

Read this item about RTD talking about his love for Dr Who last night but was too tired to post the link so doing so now. (incidentally there was also an article about Star Wars Christmas Special which was fun.)

According to JMS (creator of Babylon 5) one of the actors objected to something his character did in the second season and his objections were taken on board and the script modified accordingly. A good script writer should at least give consideration to the opinions of the actor regarding their character. Some do some don’t and this in the only example that immediately springs to mind. Older more experienced actors are more likely to have input into their characters than younger, less confident actors. (I am thinking now of Ryan and Yaz, who were very inconsistently written characters and would no doubt have improved had the actors had more say.)

I have just watched the final episode of the last series and yes agree with your point about the lack of a strong coherent plot. The start was promising, the end was cute but what was that hot mess in the middle all about? There were cybermen, daleks and the Master doubling as Rasputin, (neat idea but didn’t seem to really go anywhere), all swirled together in a badly cooked soup. I would not have minded had it been a bit incoherent if there had been good dialogue, well developed characters, even the odd moment of humour but the script was flatter than one of my failed pitta breads.Then he tried throwing in a lot of beloved old faces to try and win over fans but gave them the same leaden dialogue. They deserved better, J.W. Yaz and Kate all deserved better.

@dentarthurdent I am currently reading Reaper Man, usually while I am sitting in the car in supermarket car-parks surrounded by shopping trolleys which is weirdly apt. Also living in a semi rural town that has had the centre drained of life by external shopping centres the point he is making is all too prescient. Terry Pratchett has a strong humanist message, or Humanist. It certainly accords with the Humanist ethos.

Also yes agree that T.P and Douglas Adams are very similar in style and certainly in humour. Both have a lot of depth in their writing. I still think that D.A. had the best solution to ruling the universe. (The man on the island who did not know that he was President)

I am fond of the TV adaptation of Hogfather because that was my introduction to T.P though I have not got to the book yet so will probably amend my view of it when i do. I did enjoy the animated adaption of Maurice and his Educated Rodents, (with David Tennants’ fine voice acting skills) after reading the book but that is a somewhat simpler narrative and it certainly did not capture the philosophical complexity of the book, remarkable for a children’s story but I was not expecting any adaptation to pull that off.

Hi @oochillyo I would say yes that every story creates its own logic, ie the Tardis, utterly impossible but explained within the story and that also leads to other story justifications. Likewise the Doctor regenerating. take for example the Doctor changing gender, that is explained logically withing the narrative and has been so since the end of the Hartnell era even if the writers of the time weren’t thinking in those terms.

I am currently reading Terry Pratchett novels. The plots are insane but makes sense within the logic of that world and he really pushes the boundary of what is and is not justifiable.

The same rule applies to art as well.. One of my sons is a digital artist. He creates fantasy scenes but still has to justify the elements within them according to the logic of the fantasy world he is creating.

This is not a hard and fast rule, there are none when it comes to creativity and I hate people who say you have to do this or that, write this way or that way, because we are all different and operate differently but in general creative works, images, stories, “read” better if they operate according to their own logic. I would suggest be creative and then develop a justification. Trying to work out the “justification” for what you are creating can lead to some interesting narrative complexity and give more depth to your fantasy world.

Interesting idea that Me is the Doctor’s mother. Don’t think I have heard that suggested before. IT would play to the claim from the movie that he is part human. I am not really a fan of that though. I prefer the Doctor to be completely alien with an unaccountable liking for humans. (all I can say is that Gallifreyans must be really rotten if humanity compares favourably to them.)

@dentarthurdent Sorry for not commenting earlier on this excellent review. I have been busy in the past couple of week and not been able to post as much as I would like.

I think you sum up the episode really well. I am not sure that Anah was attached or was the entire story about her being killed a fiction designed to trap the Doctor? I need to re-watch it clearly. I loved the depiction of the Trap Street community. That is captured really well in this episode and there are plenty of interesting minor characters, sign of a good writer. I must check and see if Sarah Dollard has done any other scripts for Who. This one is very good. I do often wonder though as to the degree that Moffat edited scripts.

@blenkinsopthebrave Yes. I had forgotten the return of the Celestial Toymaker. It is indeed long overdue as he was a great character with potential. Good choice of actor too i think.
