Has your Mum ever mentioned Whale meat ?

After the war everything was still rationed and beef was too expensive.

Whale meat was more affordable and delicious if cooked properly. Each steak was about on and a half inches thick and tasted a little like liver. The gravy, made from the juice of meat and vegetables, thickened with flour was mouth watering.

The only vegetable I didn’t like was sprouts, and I still don’t. Pizza I can live without, hamburgers, take them or leave them.

My favourite meal – even more than a roast – is steamed or baked fish (salmon or mackerel), with mashed potatoes, spinach and  parsley sauce. My foreign favourite is beef or prawn curry.

My tomatoes I like raw or as juice, I don’t like them cooked.

Once when I was little, Dad splashed out and took us to a restaurant. Nice bit of meat, with vegetables. Unfortunately he told us that the meat we’d just eaten was Horse! I brought the whole meal up all over the table cloth!

Very funny.   I have to say that our meals were not like yours. My mum would dish up whale steak  (cheaper than beef)with mashed potatoes,  fresh peas or spinach and gravy made from the juice of the meat and vegetables and thickened with flour.(yum)

She never over cooked anything. Mind you, our puddings (not dessert in the UK) were rice pudding, spotted dick with custard, or apple pie also with custard.

I have always been very fond of Rose and we had begun watching series 9 again. We’ve had to stop though, too many programmes set up on our recorder, but I shall get back to it soon. So, if you can come up with another solution I’d be much obliged.

S9. Sleep no more, The women who died and The Woman who lived.

S10. Empress of Mars and Eaters of Light.

A very few others I don’t mind, the rest I love.

@janetteb: Well said, I agree. We too are watching the Eccleston series again and shall continue right through to Capaldi.

@winston    I find 12 to have the biggest  hearts of the Doctors , remembering everyone, regretting so much and trying so hard to make up for the past and to be a good man. He was crusty and cranky yet funny and even silly sometimes.He had the best intentions, usually, and was determined to protect his companions at all costs.  His humanity was great but he was the best at ranting.

Peter Capaldi.

For me he was the most human, whilst trying not to be.

The most compasionate.

Grumpy to hide his true feelings.

The loss of his home, showing so clearly on his very expressive face.

Complex, in a way that the others weren’t.

Funny, in a different way to the others.

He made me feel that the Doctor was a real entity.

And came over to me as  father figure, that you could always depend upon.

He is also a damn good actor!

There is much more, but I can’t think just now.

@idiotsavon: I’ve nothing smart to say. I just loved it, and I’ve got snot on my sleeve. What a great way for a fine writer and a fine actor to bow out together.

As did I.  Although  I won’t see 70 again, the 12th Doctor was a father figure in my mind.

My opinion, but that is how PC’s acting and the writing made me feel and why I shall miss both of them so much.

What with hating the new Doctor and the complete change, plus real life stuffing things up, I haven’t had the heart to visit the forum and read all posts – it wasn’t because of either of you.

You weren’t harsh, it was me being sensitive.

Good idea that drink offer, G and T methinks would go down a treat. We don’t have to agree to get on.

The last break lasted 28 years, I wouldn’t have expected that, a bit excessive.

Having a new team isn’t having a break, it’s simply changing Doctors as the series has always done. Not the same at all.

I realize that for most, this question doesn’t have a rational answer, because our love for the series isn’t imbedded in the rational, but in the emotional. So it’s hard to pinpoint why we want and need certain things from whatever it is we love, and why we feel we’ve been failed when those things don’t deliver, or the payoff isn’t what we expect.

Exactly! Why couldn’t I have said that? With me, when emotions take hold, I become almost incoherent. I too liked Christopher Eccleston and those two episodes. I found it very amusing when they used “Are you my Mummy.” in at least two other episodes.

Using Moffat’s words were very appropriate, lovely touch.

There again, most of Moffat’s words are appropriate.

He has written so many speeches, and one liners, all of which apply to the human condition and are so true.

Then he found the perfect actor to deliver them.

How I shall miss his brand of profundity.

No one has mentioned the musical score? It was beautiful. Shades of the  12th Doctor’s theme, the singing towers of Darillium, and the sad music from Heaven Sent, along with much, much more.

The Doctor’s ring falling off, was surley not Chibnalls idea? Steven Moffat wrote the episode, so it must have been his.

I finally watched it this morning, and if one can actually enjoy saying goodbye to the best Doctor ever – in my opinion – I did. It made me laugh and  cry and was the best Christmas special since Husbands fo River song I’ve seen. Some of your views  I agree with and some I don’t, but it was beautifully written, with both humour and pathos.

The final scene however, gave me the biggest laugh. although this is probably not the correct interpretation, I prefer mine. The Tardis kicking the next Doctor out out – I loved it. Perhaps she felt as I do and  when she exploded, I felt that she decided to go too like her Doctor. *grins*

I doubt I shall ever come to terms with a female in the lead, and think that three companions is just a touch excessive? However, I shall watch the first two episodes and take it from there.

I have never felt like this before. The only thing I can put it down to, is that although PC said several times,

that the Doctor was an alien not Human, somehow he manged to make his Doctor more human than any of the

actors before him.
