Rather than an exploding TARDIS, which isn’t really to do with regenerations, is it more likely to represent Doctor-Donna or Rose’s 10.2 version? Would love to see Donna back (even though the chances are probably nil 🙁 )

Can’t believe people in the U.S. got their DVDs early and I have to wait until at least the 20th! I’ve just seen my order contains some “art cards” of all the movie-style posters which is pretty cool

Very nervous about being spoiled but I can’t resist this forum so hoping I can still make last-minute bonkers theories! Shame that the NiS page is so quiet as I think there were lots of clues in there.

I can stay away from the TV trailer spoilers pretty easily but knowing my luck, I’ll see a newspaper headline or some person in the office will mention something spoilerific. Maybe I should just walk around in a spacesuit all week 🙂

Just saw the “he said, she said” prequel. Not a spoiler for the next ep, definitely just a prequel for the finale. Fun to watch 🙂

My 8 y/o was asking me why Clara is impossible so I told him a few theories. He is now confident Clara is a regenerated River. I’m still not euro but with all the waxwork/double/mirror refs she will most likely turn out to be a creation of someone and not,in fact, just an ordinary girl

This episode was a bit hit & miss for me but there was so much in it I think we will be discussing it all week!

Matt did a great impression of 9 & 10. Lots of double-doctor and bad doctor. We also saw waxworks again! I recognised a few, including the vulture from SJA episode ‘death of the doctor”. Some foreshadowing perhaps? We also get reminded the Doctor can regenerate at will not just if dying.

Odd how Clara’s brooch was the same as her necklace. Does it bear any resemblance to UNIT’s crest? Also, suprised how much she trusted the Doctor to protect the kids and she just left them!

I thought the chess thing was a bit naff, as well as the confrontation in the Doctor’s mind. We do see the Doctor is willing to sacrifice his queen. Is that Clara or River?

I thought the mind block was the Doctor’s name, even he doesn’t know it anymore. Did he block it out on purpose? Will him speaking it be the same as the Emperor’s voice activation of the bomb? There were so many parallels between the Emperor and the Doctor it was almost too sign posted.

My boys didn’t think they cybermen were very scary, apart from a few jump moments near the start. I’m a bit tired of episodes where a whole army appears & gets destroyed in a few minutes. A few cybermen would have bern a lit scarier than the whole tomb imho.

Off to put the boys in bed now. Can’t wait to hear what all you lot spotted

I’m starting to think Clara is a but of smoke & mirrors

designed to distract us from what’s really going on.

 

That is, The Doctor being an unknown man in the universe. Shouldn’t the Daleks have taken over now? There is nothing dropping them. Maybe that is why the Doctor will need to release the Timelords, to give him some back up!

Then again, I’m nit sure the timelords will be set free as that is a bit if a re-hash of RTD’s finale

Just got a bit carried away watching the multitude of Doctor Who 50th anniversary fan trailers on YouTube. The last one featured the end bit of this episode with Angie and Artie talking to Clara.

Angie says “We’ll have to tell our Dad our Nanny is a time traveler”. It just struck me what an odd thing that is for a child to say. What child nowadays would actually use the word “Nanny”, especially as Clara is meant to be a family friend not just some hired help. Seems like they are trying to emphasize the whole Nanny element as a plot point to me.

On a side note about the fan trailers, they are all very good and rather epic but wouldn’t it be great to see one that only had clips from Moffat episodes, that could really highlight some clues for the 50th!

Something I just thought, that’s been hidden in plain sight, we know about certain characters returning for the 50th but there has been absolutely no references to them at. Yet we hear one mention of Susan in RoA & she’s the best guess for a return.

This makes me think the 50th will be almost completely standalone.

I just came here to post that exact interview that @phaseshift linked.

First time I’ve dipped my toes in this section on the forum so can others advise if it is safe to follow (i.e. no spoilers directly displayed)?

@Shazzbot Cybermen are one of the few baddies I remember having nightmares about in Old Who (the McCoy years) when I was little. Gaiman makes a bit of a song and dance about the face design but it doesn’t look that different to the Cybus ones! Those vacant eyes are definitely part of the fear factor but what scared me the most was that I actually found the whole “they used to be humans” thing so terrifying. Not even sure if that was true for the Old Who cybermen but that’s what it felt like!

Just finished catching up on this thread, some really nice new and refined theories from all. I especially like @OsakaHatter Part 1 bit.

An update on my Crimson Horror poster clues (I’ve sworn to never miss a Vote Saxon clue again!). I can’t spot any more details on the one mentioning a waxwork so I guess it was just reference to the dummies/copies/double-doctor theory.

The is also another poster about a Circus coming to town which features Ghosts & Freaks on show.

The last poster is for a pantomime called something like “Giants of Meddlebury Pass” I forget what it actually said and Google is not helping. If you want to take a look, it is behind Mr Thursday when he faints a final time.

I also have a new theory but I’m thinking it is more for the 50th than this month’s finally. As an aside, it is really annoying to have to guess whether this season’s finale will be a climax or a complete cliff-hanger leading up to the 50th. Anyway…

My big friendly theory is that the Timelords will escape the Time-lock in the finale. They won’t be able to kill the Doctor but as punishment they rewind time back to when the Doctor is a baby. This is in hope the Doctor will perhaps choose a different path as shown in “Turn Left” that means the TLs never get locked up. The final seen will show Clara putting the Doctor baby in his cot. Thus effectively re-setting the playing field for brand new adventures as the Doctor grows up (including a “Timelord Academy” spin off for CBBC 😉 )!

As that doesn’t explain Clara’s mystery, maybe my theory relates to the 50th special. I have a feeling something bad will happen to the kids in next weeks ep and she will refuse to travel with the Doctor anymore OR the Doctor will have to choose between saving the kids or Clara and he will choose the kids, hoping Clara will be reborn

Also, the TomTom thing was a nice joke, although a bit jarring with the boys modern voice! Then I remembered the old sontaron episode where they took control of all the sat-have! Clever link.

At the end, back on Earth, the Doctor goes of without Clara again. Why? Those kids are a bit suspicious. Angie & Artie seem like funny names that may mean more. Angela & Arthur? Doesn’t ring any bells yet

Very enjoyable ep, lots of The League of Gentlemen style humour (wouldn’t want Gattiss as a showrunner though).

suprised at the doctors lack of sympathy to the victims and Mrs G. He seemed very callous about all the tragedy. He didn’t seem to mind being blatantly called a monster either

LOL the age of a time traveller can be very confusing!

Most planets measure years by the length of time to travel around the sun. This seems completely irrelevant to Timelords so I guess their age can’t really be expressed in years.

More likely they count it in seconds, then that can be easily calculated to whatever planet you are on. Then again, I suppose seconds move faster in some places?!?

Ultimately, it could be irrelevant to the Timelord as we still don’t have any concrete facts on regeneration. It will probably always get a timey-wimey answer

RE: Gamechanger, how about a series of Doctor Who without the Doctor! I can see the Doctor getting killed or trapped in the time lock at the end of the series. Would they be brave enough to do a series with someone else in the lead? It would be almost a spin-off show (I remember talk of Jenny getting one after tDD) but would provide the opportunity for a female lead

I imagined River at the time but it could’ve been anyone who has met the Doctor, maybe Jackie Tyler! While defending this episode from the terrible review it got on the sfx blog I thought of another couple of points

Tricky, the android brother, is another example of someone living a lie, a person unaware they have another identity. He thinks he was a robot but was human all along.

The brothers names were a bit odd, Bram and Gregor, is that a Bram Stoker reference? Can’t think of a famous Gregor?

This next bit goes against my previous theory that the TARDIS is actually protecting Clara…

The TARDIS exploded/ruptured/broke when it was in the Mag-field so it protected the Doctor by ejecting him. It couldn’t care less about Clara so she was left inside to burn! Can’t think how else he ended up outside

@haveyoufedthefish This version of the Doctor likes his throwaway lines. In Sarah Jane Adventures he says to Clyde that he is something like 2000 years old. By describing the TARDIS as infinite I assumed he meant there are infinite configurations. I’ve always imagined the TARDIS is like a holodeck. A big empty space that has lots of ‘hard-light’ holograms to stop the pilot going mad and give him something to do! Another interpretation is that he meant it like a ring could be described as infinite, i.e. it has no start or finish but can be very small.

Regarding the Arch-Recon. I think it can “build” any hologram, like changing a door to a wall, or providing a gantry to walk past the eye of harmony. I don’t think it can build anything that you can take outside of the TARDIS

I’ve come to realise that whatever errors/mistakes the writers come up with the viewers can always cover it up with a bonkers theory! I hope that doesn’t encourage too much lazy writing :/

@Shazzbot No, I meant a future Doctor created Clara as a Snarl to protect him from himself. I’m not really 100% on that though!

I think the Who in the book wasn’t the Doctor’s name, that just doesn’t make sense grammatically. Rather she found that out in the “tiny” bottle that she snorted in the library. That was actually gallifrayan whereas the book could be English.

Side note, do you think the BBC will publish the book after the finale?

Just remembered the Doxtor talking to Clara at the cliff edge. He described it as a snarl. A trick an animal plays to protect itself. Is Clara a snarl?

Looks like most of the clues I spotted have already been called out by others here! Really enjoyable episode.

In the pre-titles scene, the eldest brother has an “Alien of the Month” painting on his wall. I didn’t recognise the species but there was something familiar about it.

Also, the Doctor just changed his own future and even spooks to himself! Doesn’t that break all the rules? Or is it ok because he went through a crack rather than actually flying to his past in the tardis?

I know this was mentioned earlier but Clara points out that red means danger!

This episode definitely makes me think Clara is, or has been sent by, the Doctor’s mother. Has she escaped the time lock? Is that why she could read the book? The books title was in English so was it actually written in English or was the tardis translating ?

I asked my 8 y/o what he thought we would see in the TARDIS tomorrow. He said “because the doctor is getting eveil now I think you’ll see a room full of all his previous companions trapped in freezers”

@thedoctordude Intrigued by the dark Doctor being the Master. Don’t think it could work because he is locked up with the rest of the Time Lords but intriguing because I’m now wondering if when a time lord regenerates he can take someone else’s identity or if it’s more a case of he can “will” certain features like male/female, short/tall.

Although The Doctor implies he could be a woman he always goes on about being ginger and he hasn’t even been able to manage that!

@bluesqueakpip Do you think there are just 3 versions of her then? I always thought there is likely to be 100s scattered around!?!

I’m wondering if there is an animal, germ or mythical creature that get’s split apart and does it follow a cycle of re-joining then splitting again? I seem to recall some story about monsters being cut up and kept in separate places so they don’t have their full power … *dons thinking cap*

I think it was in human nature (defo a Tennant ep) where you see a flashback to when the doctor was a child at school.

 

He says something like everyone chose a name when they graduated, he picked the Doctor. So presumably 100s of timelords know his name so it can’t be anything that special, unless he made it special after he wiped them all out.

 

I may be completely mixed up in this so clara-fication would be appreciated

New-(I-Think)-Clara-Theory-Alert!

Clara (the version we are on now) is a normal woman. The Doctor is so determined to discover her non-existent secret that he ends up destroying her, or more dramatically  failing to save her when he had the chance.

As punishment (from some higher authority?) she is re-born (like a phoenix) across time and he is cursed with failing to save her again, and again, and again… to infinity or until the paradox resolves itself.

Other speculation

Speaking of infinity, isn’t the symbol for that a number 8 on it’s side, which looks a lot like a bow tie :0

Of course, I think, it could also being a snake eating it’s tail, forming a ring. Didn’t the Master have a snake ring?

Regarding colours, red is the colour of fire – linking to the phoenix again. Also, red+blue=purple and the Doctor is now wearing a purple outfit.

Regarding the Carlyle/Carlisle debate, what do the subtitles say?

Whatever happens, I think the Doc’s name and Clara’s mystery will be solved by the final ep and not carry into the 50th, as that will be fore more casual viewers and old fans rather than just the current viewers

Hi all, time for my Monday input! Only had time to get through one page here but got so much to talk about I’m posting now 😀

I thought it was a great episode, despite a genre switch halfway through and some annoying/unatural Doctor/Clara choreography (when they seem to dance around each other when looking through the house). We waited until it got dark before we watched the episode which meant it was much more atmospheric with the curtains drawn and candles on.  My 8 y/o was suitably scared, he could barely keep himself still when Clara was on her own with the “ghosts”.

After last weeks episode being fairly self-contained, IMO, “Hide” seemed choc-full of references to future and past goings on. In fact, at the end I felt like I had just seen a preview to the finale ep. Here’s my observations…

 

1, Paradoxes sort themselves out. The Doctor isn’t that bothered about causing them then! Also, provides a handy escape clause for later on in the series

2, The Doctor and Clara need a safe word! How scared does she need to be before the Doctor pays attention to her? He seems to be being purposefully cruel to test her. Maybe he wants to get her angry? He certainly seems obsessed beyond reason. Now he realises Clara is ordinary perhaps that is why we will be going back to the Victorian era to see Governess Clara again.

3, Reminded me a lot of Weeping Angels with the harp and statues. Also, by saving the time traveller he has effectively done the same as an Angel but who will feast on the time energy she left behind?

4, Numerous mentions of 11 especially Whisky being the 11th worst thing ever. Clara seems to be calling out all the Doctors on being bad and perhaps needing to be terminated

5, The professor’s similarities to the Doctor, having a companion, complicated love story, being a ‘war hero’ in the Doctor’s eyes. There seems to be more war/battle references. Looks like we’re heading for some Time War action?

6, More ice. Ice in his heart, the windows freezing up, “Help Me” frozen onto the wall. An obvious reference to the GI

7, The TARDIS stopping Clara. I think we may have this the wrong way around. What if the TARDIS is *protecting* Clara. This makes more sense as to why she is allowed in sometimes and not others. Alternatively, if it is a trust thing, perhaps the TARDIS is just replicating the Doctor’s distrust of Clara.

8, We all chuckled at the umbrella/hatstand bit. We all thought it was just a reference to  10’s TARDIS (which we have the toy set of). Just a little in-joke in the eyes of Nu-Who viewers.

9, Pocket Universes. Another get out clause for future eps. I can see the Doctor getting trapped in one later on. His balloon explanation seemed over-dramatic and didn’t really explain things much. Reminded me of 3D glasses though 😉

10, The two monsters were great. Loved how we went from being frightened by them to feeling sympathy. I appreciated the close-up reveal of it at the end. They seem to be some kind of petrified wood. Could they be a future version of The Doctor & River!?! Similar to how the Face of Boe evolved? The whole wood/space-time traveller was certainly reminiscent of River

11, I don’t think Clara was flying the TARDIS, I think she was just giving it courage to go and find the Doctor. Everyone knows a TARDIS can navigate across pocket universes unaided, it’s not time travel or anything complicated like that ;). Some people seemed to think the TARDIS stayed there too long but I think because time moved more slowly there, and the fact the TARDIS didn’t land or open it’s doors, meant that it was safe.

@ardaraith There definitely seems to be a movie link (or two!) in each episode. I presumed they were just to prove how Doctor Who, the programme, can cross all genres.

I also just saw the posters for the new episodes on the BBC site. The Crimson Terror seems particularly interesting from Clara’s point of view!

Unfortunately, I also saw a rather spoilery pic from on set at the 50th anniversary 🙁

@HTPBDET I don’t think the TARDIS was trying to keep Clara out but the little girl/Queen. If she had entered it could have changed history for the worse, and the TARDIS knows it.

Also,  the girl hadn’t been invited in by the Doctor. Has anyone got into the locked TARDIS without coming in with the Doctor beforehand?

Speaking of doors, it struck me as odd how the Doctor just left the door hanging open at one point in The Bells of St John. I dismissed it as a continuity error but perhaps someone snuck in?

So what about Jenny, the Doctor’s “daughter”?

If Clara=Jenny it would explain why Clara was so surprised to hear the Doctor had a granddaughter because it means that she will one day be a mum!

According to http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/The_Doctor's_Daughter_(TV_story) it was Steven Moffat who wanted Jenny to come back to life at the end of the episode. Was that all part of his master plan or just an element of his old”everybody lives” mantra?

Something that keeps playing on my mind is this bit of dialogue between Clara and the Professor

Professor: I always sing a song

Clara: What?

Professor: To keep my spirits up

Clara: Yeh, that would work…if this was Pinocchio

I’m not quite sure what it is about it, apart from that it was funny at the time.

Maybe it’s the Professors use of the word SPIRITS or possibly maybe something to do with the Picocchio Paradox http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinocchio_paradox ? Pinocchio was a toy that became real, is Clara a Sindy doll that has been given life 😛

The episode

A very enjoyable episode, it took a lot of persuasion (and pizza) to get the family back together on the sofa for this week’s episode after the disappointment last week. Nice to have my 8y/o gripping on to me when the Ice Warrior was on the loose.

I thought there wasn’t anything of particular story-arc importance here but most of you lot seem to have dug some bits up ;).

The Professor did seem to be very knowing but not sure if his likability made him seem more important than he actually was?

@htpbdet I think Clara singing at the end was purely because she was scared, not some subliminal bit of magic to disarm the warheads.

Regarding Clara, she seemed really child-like in this episode. Maybe it’s just in contrast to previous incarnations but for a 20-something she seems very naive and eager to impress.

As @scaryb alludes to, the Sonic wasn’t the weapon it was just the trigger. I didn’t think it had gained new powers (except the red light). In fact it was more of a weapon in last week’s ep. One question, did it go red at the beginning of the ep or was it after the Professor had kept it for a while?

@juniperfish The Doctor being Dalek-ised is a tempting solution but I don’t think he is the same as Clara in the Asylum. Much like the people trapped in the Wi-fi, they seemed limited to being trapped in the room they were converted in.

The Ice Warriors use of the word ‘blink’ seemed out of place. Could it have been a link to Moffat’s biggest success? – big new theory alert – The Weeping Angels are sending Clara around time and space (not sure why she’d have memory issues though?)

 

Wider speculation

River was stolen as a child to be used as a weapon kill the Doctor. I speculate she isn’t de-activated yet and does end up killing him. In Silence in the Library she mentions seeing other regenerations of the Doctor so I’m guessing she’ll see at least one more. Having River still involved also makes Clara as their daughter more plausible … maybe .. perhaps … !?!? :S

A very enjoyable episode, lots of action to kick-start the next half of the series and quite funny too. Enjoyed the jammie dodger bit but are they getting a kick-back from companies for product placement? Burger King got a nod too.

 

I thought it was very odd to see the video screen on Clara’s door. Seems a bit over the top for a normal house and a lot more expensive than spyhole! It was also very similar to how she saw the Doctor in Asylum of the Daleks.  Was there any similar imagery used in The Snowmen?

The threat of getting trapped in the Wi-Fi doesn’t sound too hellish a fate. I wonder if Skype would still work. I presumed the GI were “upgrading” Clara (d’oh now I’m thinking of the cybermen!) so her and all the other uploads could be used as a hive mind/code-breaking machine. Reminds me of the Dalek pathweb but I don’t think we’ll be seeing them again soon now they’ve been firmly reset twice!

UNIT looked a bit different, more like a heavily armed SWAT team than what I’d seen before.

Has anyone thought that the answer we’ve all been waiting for is … Doctor Summer? Given Moff’s habit of hiding clues in plain sight and dodgy character’s names of the past, is it that too much of a stretch?
