     the Land of Fiction

This was mentioned during in the last season’s comments (somewhere…maybe even by me), so it might have some legs. I wonder if RTD will go back to the well of old Who for a second season on the run.

Mrs Flood was obviously the Doctor’s original Nanny

That would be a really interesting take, although I suspect all the talk about her being Susan / The Master / River / The Rani / Who else have I missed? would mean lots of viewers may be disappointed in the reveal. That said, it didn’t stop RTD last season (i.e. Ruby’s mum’s reveal as an ordinary person)

I feel like a puppy continually charging at some closed patio doors

Hahaha. Yes absolutely. Will we never learn.

I think you may have struggled to find any extant Who with her in it. Aside from The Daleks Master Plan (lost) The Crusades is also lost I think. McCoy ep Battlefield your best (only) option there.

I’m not familiar with that version of Holmes or that story, but glad you managed to get a tribute watch in.

I do like a good Holmes story, with Jeremy Brett’s tv version being excellent. I also have a soft spot for the old movie versions with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, although they tended to veer wildly away from the source material.

And of course there’s always the 80s BBC Hound of the Baskervilles version with Tom Baker, if you want a Who tie-in.

It’s all hearsay atm, and there may be more innocent explanations. As you point out, the Tardis is often rebooted when there is a new Doctor. If this is the case, then the next casting is going to be very interesting.

I’m pretty neutral on another regen, as I am not sold on Gatwa as the Doc. Dunno why, just some actors don’t have enough Doctoriness about them (or the writing doesn’t allow it).

It’s not about just the lead. As above, C Baker and Jodie Whittaker were / are decent actors. The point about both of them is that their seasons were not well received. There’s a kind of alchemy about most shows and Who is no exception (and, due to the nature of the show, might even need that undefinable magic more than most).

Plus, the TV world has changed. Quality is generally up, so poorer shows tend to stand out, and the audience has lots of other options. It’s also far more commercial, so quality alone may not be enough (thankfully the BBC is a bit of an outlier, but the streaming channels are not). Did anyone see Kaos? A solid, well written and acted show that was canned by Netflix because the viewing figures (which were reasonable) didn’t support the large budget. That’s after one season. No chance to bed the show in. Gone. It’s brutal.

My hope is that the BBC take Who back in house and find a way to reboot with a smaller budget, more intimate stories and a fresh creative team. RTD has done an absolutely outstanding job and we wouldn’t even be talking here without him. But he’s been writing Who for 20 years on and off, so no surprise it’s getting a little stale.

“History Doesn’t Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes”
    Samuel Langhorne Clemens

You are right in that we are no where near Twin Dilemma levels of storytelling. Or that we have a showrunner actively trying to kill the show. The way contemporary televisin works, I don’t think those levels of Who will be plumbed again. However…

There are some similarities between now and then.

    • We have passed peak Doctor (Baker [T] vs Tennant [10])
    • We have just come off the back of a Doctor that wasn’t well received (Baker [C] vs Whittaker)
    • Falling Ratings
    • A production team / decision makers that aren’t all that committed to the show (Internal BBC politics / Michael Grade vs Disney)
    • Showrunner hubris (arguably)

    Rhymes everywhere you look.

Coupled with the other rumours and it’s easy to make the case that Who will be out on hiatus. That doesn’t mean it will happen of course but I’d expect a 2-year gap at minimum.

I have to say I am more than a little concerned.

But back to the ep. I’d agree that the hospital power failure was a bit of a mis-step. Surely people would have died (unless backup power, which we didn’t see), and the Doc was responsible. As @blenkinsopthebrave said earlier, tonally all over the place.

More tears from the Doc too. They didn’t feel earned imo, as Sasha 55 was there and gone in the blink of an eye. Crying is definitely this Docs thing…

Yes, hopefully there’s another explanation for the set, or its simply not true.

I saw your post on the other thread about Jean Marsh. I’d not linked her with Who, as she’s best known for Upstairs Downstairs.

What are you watching? Sara Kingdom from The Daleks Master Plan? Most of it is missing, although I recently listened to an audio of that story, which used the original soundtrack and with added narration by Peter Purvis.

    Or The Crusades? Or Battlefield?

(yes I have been using Google)

Apparently she also appeared in cameo in An Adventure in Space and Time too. Anyhoo, enjoy.

When RTD brought back Who after the show was cancelled, in large part because of the excesses of John Nathan-Turner in the late ’80s, RTD’s revival of Who really felt like Doctor Who, but this feels like the cartoon excesses of JNT on speed.

Oh the irony if RTD is both the person who brought Who back and the one to oversee it’s demise.

There are some rumours floating about that the Tardis set at Bad Wolf studios has been dismantled. This is potentially a very bad omen, as the thing was expensive (so unlikely to have been built for only 2 seasons). Of course they could be moving it somewhere…

Nice linking of Romana there. I know there’s a lot of talk re Mrs Flood, but I’m hoping she’s a new character (or Omega!), rather than an old favourite. And, as @blenkinsopthebrave alluded to, she really needs a bit more agency – the 4th wall breaking monologue is looking somewhat old now.

    @blenkinsopthebrave

I didn’t have an issue with the explanation for Belinda – it’s been done before with other characters (Martha, Doc 12), and probably was done because the actor has only recently appeared in the show. This bit of the scene was a late-ish addition I think (RTD had originally written the character as Belinda Finch (?), or a similarly Anglo sounding name) but changed his mind once he’d seen Sethu in Boom. May be why it didn’t fully work…

    @devilishrobby

Interesting insight into RTDs writing process and his long-term view. Hopefully the Disney execs have a similar POV. It’s weird that we’ve had no announcement about the next season. I believe RTD is writing / has written some scripts though. Maybe the execs at The House of Mouse are waiting to see how the current run goes. Either way, given there is no filming happening atm (I believe), there will be a couple of years until the next season as and when it returns. If Disney don’t want it and the BBC have the will and the £££ to take it back in house, it’ll likely be 3-4 years I reckon. Hopefully not.

And I’m calling it now: Regeneration at the end of this season.

Eiffel Tower? I thought it was Blackpool Tower 🙂

I think the schwup is something to do with the reason that they can’t get back to Earth on 24th May – incidentally that’s the air date of the penultimate episode (“penultimate” from the old Latin meaning “the ep we all get excited about before the crushing letdown of the finale”)

The schwup is a similar device to that used for Amy and Rory’s last episode in that the Tardis can’t land at a certain time / place because of in-story reasons. What’s unclear is how wide this window of restriction (needs a better name) is. Are we talking a couple of days, a week? 10 years? 100 years? I’d presume it’s quite large otherwise they’d just go back to the 23rd May (say) and just hang around for a few hours.

Bigger question is how this happened and by whom?

I suspect the destroyed Earth can / will be prevented by crossing the time schwup and ending up back in time and prior to the catastrophe.

That’s all I’ve got. I did like the retro future visuals. And, at risk of sounding like a terrible person, the cat death made me actually laugh.

Congrats on the new job, hope it’s all you hope it will be.

I get to watch Who at a now very civilised 5pm, but don’t have a burning desire to post immediately.

Opening after a terrestrial airing is a nice callback to earlier Who.

That’s interesting, I’d not heard of The Captain’s Paradise. I’ll check it out.

Apparently there were two thoughts re the Delgado Master: either the Docs brother, or that they were two halves of the same person. Id and Ego if you like. There was something called the Final Game which was going to set all this out:

    https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/The_Final_Game_(unproduced_TV_story)

There is a fan produced YouTube series, which I’ll listen to when I get round to it:

    https://youtu.be/GUVU0081khk

Of course, some of these ideas have since been used (cough, cough, Valeyard). I’m seeing this quite a lot as I am going through classic Who, with many ideas reappearing in some form or other in the modern show. I like that connection.

    #77195
    WhoHar @replies

    @blenkinsopthebrave

IIRC, there were plans to reveal that the Delgado Master was the Doctor’s brother, which were curtailed by the death of Delgado in a car crash in Spain in 1973.

Re: UNIT. I remember reading about an army Major (?) who, when asked about Doctor Who, said (I paraphrase): “Complete rubbish but the Brigadier is spot on”. I would think many of the writers of that era would have had actual recent experience of the army due to National Service, which would have informed their writing of the UNIT characters.

There’s a cracking line in the Daemons from the Brig. They are trying to subdue the gargoyle statue-come-to-life (Bok), and the Brig says to one of his men who has a rifle pointed at Bok “Chap with wings. Five rounds rapid”. Marvellous.

Not quite as far back but I am watching Pertwee’s 2nd (aka Season 8). Some stories I’d not seen before

It’s the Master season, and the quality is…variable. In descending order of quality, I’d go:

    The Daemons

    Mind of Evil

    Terror of the Autons

    Colony in Space

    The Axons

The Axons was woeful from a number of perspectives, which surprised me a bit. Apparently Capaldi was asked by Moffat which of the classic era monsters he’d bring back. Capaldi said the Axons or the Mondasian Cybermen. Moffat baulked at the Axons and we ended up with World Enough and Time, and The Doctor Falls, so it worked out pretty well I’d say.

Anyhoo back to Season 8: There’s still plenty to enjoy in the season, for me anyway. I’m a big fan of Delgado, and him and the Doc’s interactions are great. Similarly with the Unit crew (aside: one of the Unit tech guys was a Sergeant called Osgood!).

And The Daemons is one of my favourite classic Who stories – all English folk horror. Lovely.

Saturday 12th April confirmed as Season 2 / Series 15 / Season 41 release date.

A whole bunch of guest stars also announced – but I won’t post the list here because of spoilers.

I’m expecting an 8-episode run but I haven’t seen that confirmed yet.

    @nerys @janetteb @dentarthurdent

The War Between the Land and the Sea is part of the current BBC-Disney deal. IIRC they signed up for (something like) an initial 25 episodes total. Which would mean an 8-episode season 2. I would have preferred a longer run, but I’ll take what I can get at this point.

Still no release date for TWBtLatS that I can find.

While I expect the “axed” story to be over-sensationalised guff and (mainly) untrue, the fact it is there at all is perhaps significant; there may be something going on behind the scenes that we won’t become aware of until much later.

All that said, I think a shake-up would do the show some good, starting with splitting the script editing out from the Showrunner role.

Another death of Doctor Who story, originating in the Sun, so take with a barrelful of salt:

Doctor Who Reportedly “Faces Axe” as Ncuti Gatwa “Quits” and Crew Is “Laid Off” | Doctor Who TV

Also mentions Gatwa is leaving (which seems more plausible imho) after Season 2 – I think he’ll have lots of “bigger” work to go at.

If I take this at face value, then it seems there are internal conflicts and that, sadly, many of the regular workers on the show are likely to be hardest hit.

On the plus side, we’ve seen these types of breaking news stories before. Who knows <taps nose surreptitiously>

    WhoHar @replies

I quite enjoyed it, even if it did seem a bit like a rehash of some of Moffat’s ideas. Villengard again, Dinosaurs again, timey-wimeyness again. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though.

I thought Gatwa was more Doctory than he’s been before.

I confess to some confusion over how Joy survived and transformed the weapon into a star. My viewing was interrupted, so it may be something I missed.

And did Moffat introduce Jesus into the Whoniverse at the end?

Anyhoo, Happy New Year to all.

    @janetteb

    Agreed.

I was close to bailing after the first two eps, but thought I’d at least try the Moffat-penned Boom. It was only ok imo but the trend in episode quality was going up. I also heard somewhere that the finale would have a link to the 3rd Doc, (there wasn’t) which hooked me in and, from there, I decided I may as well watch the lot. 73 yards and TLoRS being, for me, the best of the season.

Gatwa’s unavailability for two of the 8 eps has made it more difficult for me to see him as The Doctor. I generally struggle with the first season of a new Doc anyway but the short season that includes two Doctor very-lite eps has made this more so. Hopefully I’ll get the “now he’s the Doctor” moment next season.

The broadcast landscape has massively changed since the 2005 revival, not only, as you say, with the amount of streaming available but, I’d also argue, that the quality of shows now available is higher. Add to that the constant and very vocal engagement of fans (and not-so-fans) online and that means that any show that is not seen to pass muster gets a harder time.

It seems to me that RTD has chosen to lean into the fan engagement side but has ignored the fact that the quality of writing needs to also improve.  It’s a tough gig, and maybe some fresh faces and ideas would help.

    #76775

    @janetteb

Maybe. I expect that – if Disney do end their involvement – then the show would revert back to the BBC. This might actually be a good thing. I don’t know what that would mean for the current creative team.

There always seems to be a level of glee any time DW ratings drop. I don’t know what would make the BBC decide to put the show on hiatus – it’s probably not just ratings. It may be related to merchandise sales, or possibly a creative decision. The very fact these discussions are apparently being had is not positive though.

Gatwa’s involvement after the next season also appears in doubt.

I think San Diego ComicCon is soon, so it may be that the Who-ST tie in is related to that.

I guess you need a certain level of self-confidence to showrun a major show. I guess the trick is to make sure it doesn’t go to your head.

As Dickie Attenborough once said: “The day you believe your own publicity, you’re dead”.

I honestly preferred the days when the showrunners focused on the show rather than the publicity. I know you need both, but there seems too much of the latter at the expense of the former.

And, yes, Rule 2: the showrunner lies. But it becomes tedious if it’s all the time and, I’d argue, self-defeating.

And the publicity should never fill in the gaps in the storytelling…

As my mother used to say

    No, wait. It was

When you’re in the pub never talk religion or politics

But, she had Northern Irish heritage and we know how sensitive both those topics were in that region. The point being,  I think, that you are unlikely to change anyone’s mind on these topics.

I reckon a Venn diagram of Doctor Who fans and left wing politics would have quite the crossover. Although, how you define “left wing” would be subject to a long diatribe on my part.

But, in all seriousness, I hope the turnout is high and the engagement is good, and that the UK finally gets a government that works for the people rather than their own vested interests.

Looking in from the outside, the abuse of the UK by the Conservative government these last 14 years saddens me deeply.  Good luck.

    @craig, @ps1l0v3y0u

I think the problem is three-fold:

The two (three) main parties do not have sufficient differentiators in their policies, noting that some are further to the right than others. And there is a deep mistrust of the mainstream politicians in particular.

People see a vote for a smaller party as a wasted vote.

The Vote:Seat ratio is variable and massively favours Labour and Cons.

The UK desperately needs PR, which will help a lot of the above. How that will come about, is a question I am unable to find a good answer for.

All that said, we have a form of PR here in Aus, and a lot of the same problems still exist. Encouragingly, at the last G.E (every three years here, and you are legally obliged to vote), a lot of independents won seats.

    Good luck to you all.

Interesting about the “shouty” in The Bear. I found the 2nd ep of this season a bit too much like that. There was an awful lot in Season 2 and, although a tough watch at times, was done very well.

I’m pacing myself through the rest – I understand ep 6 was well received and directed by Ayo Edebiri.

    my Dad has dementia

Sorry to hear that Craig. It can be very confronting, especially in one-on-one situations. I speak from some experience as my parents had dementia. I found it both worrying and somewhat frustrating. For me, it helped to talk to siblings (if you have them) or close friends, and we also found humour to be a bit of a crutch. It’s tough though, and I sympathize.

I remember watching this film many years ago on television. Always a fan of David Niven (Incidentally I’m just starting his autobiography The Moon’s a Balloon). Unfortunately, the only copy on blu-ray I can find is Region A. I do have a region free blu-ray player but it’s not great, so I may not see the full benefit of the restored version.

The increasing technology in the field of restoration (Field of Restoration sounds like a Who story title) has given us some impressive results. I was gifted the It’s a Wonderful Life Blu-ray a couple of Christmases ago. I’ve always been rather against colourisation of black and white films, partly because the ones I had seen were done badly, and partly because my understanding is that B&W films are lighted in a specific way that’s doesn’t always translate well to colour. Anyhoo, I digress, and back to IAWL. So, I put this colourised blu-ray on and it blew me away. It lifted the whole movie up. Now I’ve seen IAWL many times in B&W, so maybe it was partly down to the novelty of James Stewart et al in colour, but I’m a convert.

    Really good summary.

I think the above writers’ mistake is to think it’s a game of chess played against sleuthing fans, and the writer “wins” if the speculating audience is fooled/ wrong-footed.

I tend to agree, although I do have some sympathy with the writers. I remember submitting a script and the main comment that came back was that I didn’t give the reader enough to work with. i.e. I had deliberately left information out of the script in order to not give the game away. My next draft felt, to me at least, to offer up very obvious clues and, again from my perspective, ruined the mystery. By draft 963, I’d managed to find a better way to seed clues through the narrative.

not only disappointed a lot of fans, but also (and far worse) made them feel they were being sneered at

There is definitely a number of fans that feel this way. Unfortunately, they are also using their displeasure to beat the show over un-related items. Words such as Woke, DEI and the fact the Doctor is “too” gay appear all over t’internets. And the glee at the ratings (which are trending down) is palpable. It’s depressing.

I do hope the dad is actually called Alf. I think the Ruby-Garnet(t) may be something too.

Lots of religious artefacts all over the place, and all 100% genuine of course.

I’m not sure ap William (= Son of William I found out) is going to be significant going forward. To quote another 80s band “William, it was really nothing”.

    the tardis exploding

This would be an exploding TARDIS which caused Big Bang 2, that Sutekh somehow survived. The more you think about EoD, the less sense it makes.

I’ve heard a couple of RTD interviews where he basically says that the script was written for the internet age.  i.e. to drive speculation and bonkers theorising on sites like these. So, presumably, we are complicit in this mess. He also stated that there was a “complete narrative collapse” in EoD (the bit where the Doctor and Ruby are transported from 2046 and back to present day Unit HQ when Harriet pulls a lever in the TARDIS. Noting that the Doc and Ruby aren’t in a TARDIS at that point) Further, there is an RTD explanation for the cloak – it was “time shielding her” whatever that means. RTD has really dropped the ball here.

I’m leaning a bit towards the following re Ruby now:

    1. The hooded figure is Ruby’s guardian in the literal sense (i.e. not her mother) and maybe a higher-order being.

    2. Alien Life Form Garnet(t) aka Ruby’s father, is the extraordinary one.

Of course, Alf could also be the hooded figure. I can just see it now:

EXT. OUTSIDE THE PUB ON RUBY ROAD – NIGHT

The hooded figure walks towards Ruby, stops then slowly pulls down the hood, revealing Garnet

    GARNET

    I am your father.

And to add some more grist:

Moffat also said that he had only read the finale script (and I recall maybe only TLoRS). I presume that this has informed the Christmas special in some way. Maybe Nicola Coughlan will be the mysterious hooded woman.

Although Christmas episodes tend to be one offs, and a bit fluffy, so there may be nothing in there to progress the narrative.

And yes, 6 months is a long way away, particularly after this truncated season. I wonder if they are going to follow the same release pattern that they did for the other episodes. If so, then this would mean a Christmas Eve release for North America.

there won’t necessarily be a return to R’s mum.

I agree. But, @mudlark‘s forensic analysis strongly suggests something is going on. The scene in TCoRR is different to that on TLoRS, so it’s plausible that something manifested in the time window version of that scene. Possibly (very) bad, possibly friendly to Ruby.

So, no to a return to Ruby’s mum, but yes to a return to the hooded figure. Who that is (Mrs Flood, per @wolvesarerunning ‘s suggestion, or someone/thing else), is still open to bonkers theorising (hurrah!). And, as to what this new character actually wants…

I was Jesus’. Q. Why? A. ‘Because when people were killed Jesus had to make them alive again’.

Who has, of more recent years anyway, been very reluctant to kill anyone (significant) off, most egregiously with Clara, but also Donna and to some extent, the Ponds.

As soon as we saw Kate L-S dustify followed quickly by the rest of the Unit team, I immediately thought “RTD is going to pull a Last of the Time Lords here”.

I think it’s a shame that the Death of any of the main characters is avoided as it tends to diminish the stakes. Having said that, it would have to be used sparingly.

I recall an expression: You die twice. Once when you actually die, and the second time you die is the last time anyone says your name. I like this. We’re all stories in the end…

It is seeming more and more plausible that the hooded woman is not Ruby’s teenage mother. In that case, I wonder if the hooded figure is actually trying to protect Ruby from something, maybe Sutekh, maybe another threat as yet unseen?
