@thedentistofdavros  I agree with you re’ the best pairings of Doctor and companion. I also think that the pairing of Capdoc and River worked perfectly. (I have just rewatched “Husbands” and it is the rapport between them that really makes that episode so compelling to watch. The story itself with the giant fighting robot is a bit meh but that was just a sketchy frame on which to hand the real “meat” of the episode, the conclusion of River and Doctor’s story.

The original team, of Hartnell Doc’ Ian, Barbara and Susan was also excellent though Susan was not one of the strongest companions. Vicky was better as a companion but I did like the concept of the Doctor having a granddaughter. It created a mystery about his past giving an added dimension to the character. The other Doctor/Companion pairing worthy of mention is the Seventh Doctor and Ace. She was an interesting companion and there was an excellent rapport between then.

I have never encountered midges. Have camped on more than one occasion in Scotland though so must have been lucky. (Any mention of midges reminds me of Sam Gamgee in Midgewater Marsh. More BBC radio version than the Jackson version.)

@doctordani Yes. If only those sawdust for brains who run our respective nations could work out that simple little equation. People who have money spend money. The economy keeps on rolling. Take money away from people and they stop spending. Economy shrinks. Economics really is quite simple. It is only complicated for those trying to twist the facts to suit the filling of their own pockets.

@fatmaninabox Sorry to hear that things are not improving. Many years ago my S/O was told by a Employment consultant that he should drop out of Uni, (he was starting off as a part timer and hence still receiving dole) and look for some underpaid job. There was no encouragement for him to further his education and job prospects. Another time he received a letter requiring a response after the due date to respond and as a result was cut off for over a fortnight. He lived by selling his flatmates empty coke bottles.

@jimthefish. Three things we need to do to save this planet, cut carbon emissions, plant trees everywhere and introduce a living wage for all. (I will probably be “sanctioned” for writing that.)

I think I need one of Puro’s gargle blasters.

@puroandson Yes school is indeed in. Nice having only one student this year. Indeed you reminded me he has a Maths test on Tuesday so revision tomorrow. (Maths is not my department. I help with English and History when and if help is required. He was studying the poetry of Wilfred Owen a few weeks ago which was interesting, especially as I am currently researching WWI for my own purposes at the moment.)

@puroandson My guess is that Peter will do one season under Chibnall provided Chibnall wants him which, if he is sensible, he will. That is clearly what the BBC want, what Moffat would advise and given that he is a fan of the show and reportedly loving the role what Capaldi will be happy to do. I am sure a lot depends upon how Chibnall and Capaldi relate and possibly Capaldi’s view of the scripts for series 11? I have a feeling we will be kept in suspense until the series has aired next year. In the meantime I am certain there will be ample articles by journos with no more idea than you or I or quite possibly Capaldi himself at this stage, interpreting every comment he makes as proof that he is leaving and clogging up the internet.

In Australia if you aren’t receiving dole money, which a high percentage of youths under 21 are not due to parental income, then you receive no help at all in seeking work and because there is a financial incentive for employers to take someone off the dole the unfunded unemployed have little chance at all. As in the UK as @bluesqueakpip points out, it is all about the keeping the statistics as clean as possible.

@fatmaninabox Angry after reading your post. That is corrupt. I have read about the dodgy practices of so called Job Centres. I guess it is to be expected when public services are privatised. Private means profit. “Service” is no longer a consideration. I really hope the situation improves soon and you are able to get back into the gardens where you are happy. On a more positive note I am glad you have fixed your PC.

Interestingly the other night at the meeting I was at, (which had nothing at all to do with Dr Who, it is purely coincidental that I am generally in the company of at least one or more Who fans.) people were also expressing the wish that the next companion be an alien. It has long been a wish of mine. I think we are rather done with “the girl next door” companion for now. I am hoping that Moffat has something quite different up his proverbial sleeve.

@dalektor The film is probably better not watched but the minisode when 8 regenerates into the War Doctor is well worth viewing and gives a sense of what a great doctor McGann might have been.

@puroandson, @winston and @arbutus My dearly beloved laptop is now six years old and people say the same to me. The battery is utterly dead so I have to take extension cords everywhere the laptop goes and I am always checking out cafes etc for power points. I have no intention of replacing it before I absolutely have to though a little tablet would be nice. My first laptop lasted three years and went through two hard drives in that time.

All our computers are named, Azathoth, Sanctum and Oberon. R.1’s computer is named Lancelot and I think the laptop they were using is called Gawain. My first laptop was Luthian. I refused to name my current laptop after my bad experience with Luthian but last year my S/O replaced the hard drive and O.S and christened it Eowyn.

@missy, @arbutus and @doctordani I am currently (finally) doing a rewatch of 42 if indeed i have watched it at all and I agree with all that has been said re’ Martha. When she was allowed to be the Companion and not unrequited lover she was excellent. Personally too I always felt that if the Doctor had to fall in love with a companion Martha was more worthy than Rose who irritated me.

Last night I read an interview with MOffat that someone, (@pedant I think) put up a link to at least a week ago. It has been open on my browser for some time. It was really very interesting. Moffat talked about not revealing to much, the importance of having unanswered questions such as the one which underlies the entirety of Dr Who, what is his name? Moffat really apprecaits the value of what is not stated, of letting the audience fill in gaps. (I have said this often but his stories are open canvases.)

@mudlark You have been missed. Sorry to hear about the hip. I hope it settles down and surgery won’t be required.

But War and Peace? Please please don’t get me started. I have been posting madly about it on other sites and I have yet to watch a single episode of this version, not sure I will. For the past two weeks I have been re-watching the 1972 version which I first watched when I was about 12 years old, the year we got a TV. I first read the book shortly after. The TV version is still one of my favourite TV series and the book one of my favourite of favourites so I just moan whenever I read of favourite moments not included in this version or changed beyond recognition so the meaning is lost. I have also been following a historical costuming blog on this version which naturally is up in arms over the period inaccuracies. The costumes are a complete travesty, well the women’s at least. Anyway must not start ranting.

@Puroandson @kharis and @missy. It has often been talked of P.J directing an episode given that he and S.M are friends “an’ all”. Not so long ago, and I know there is a link somewhere up thread or in spoilers he posted a video on his Facebook where he pretended to be fending off call from S.M. Peter might be a great director but he cannot act, at all. Peter Capaldi delivers a letter to P.J from Moffat. It was clearly done while P.C and S.M were doing their world trip. P.J also had a bookmarked copy of The Silmarillian in front of him which was clearly simply a “tease” for fans as the Tolkien family guard the rights to that as determinedly as Smaug guarded his gold. Oh and P.J is not surprisingly a long time Who fan which has his own pet Dalek.

Missy, I would expect that most of the current writers will continue under Chibbers. Moffat took on RTDs writing team. I also rather hope that Moffat will continue to pen the occasional episode. He will also be helming the spin off series, or so I believe so won’t be leaving the “Whoinverse”. (has that fallen through? I have not heard any news about it for a while.)

@kharis The media will go mad speculating about the new Doctor even though there has been no indication to date that Capaldi will not stay on for at least one series under Chibbers so “don’t panic”. Though she is no doubt far to high profile I think Emma Watson would be a fantastic choice for companion, even as a one off in that episode that Peter Jackson is going to direct before S.M. departs. (the last is pure wishful thinking on my part BTW but I if he is ever to direct an episode and the man himself has hinted that he might, I suspect it will be Moffat’s swansong.)

@thedentistofdavros I am sorry for not crediting you. It was late when I posted last night and I was being lazy not checking back through the posts.

I have now caught up with some of the Davidson stories and while he is certainly growing on me as the Doctor and the stories are enjoyable they are brought down in my estimation by the appalling companions. It says something that the only companion between Romana and Ace that I found tolerable was the robot/android. I have yet to see Caves of Androzani.

The Romans is a lot of fun. The story is almost slapstick, bordering on being “Carry On Doctor in Rome”, but what really makes it enjoyable is the interaction between the characters. It feels as though the actors have built up a good relationship behind the camera which gives depth and warmth to their interactions in front of the camera and, unlike many fans, I have a fondness for the old historical episodes. My choice of Romans is no doubt though influenced by the fact that long ago we found a VHS of it so watched it far more often than any of the other stories which we then had no access to.

Has been a busy week with S/O starting back and work and R.2 beginning the new school year getting back into the school/work routine and all of that, not to mention trying to catch up on some of the tasks I have been neglecting through the long summer holiday so I have not had time until today to even think about my favourites other than to state the obvious which is anything penned by Steven Moffat, with maybe the exception of “Curse of Fatal Death” which was very good for what it was. However today I wrote up a list. Thinking of favourites was easy, reducing the list to something that would not take as long to read as War and Peace was the hard bit. I was surprised to find that it was series nine, rather than ten, that I had the most difficulty with. I thought series ten was overall better but had less stand out episodes.

In making the list I defined “favourites” as those episodes which I tend to re-watch most. Not all are perfect by any means but they all have something that gives them that edge over other stories. Well here goes. I apologise in advance for the long list but this is Dr Who.

I have roughly broken my list up by Doctor’s though I have only seen the fully extant stories of Hartnell and Troughton.

    • An Unearthly Child. (mostly for the first episode.)
    • The Romans.

    2nd Doctor.

    • The MInd Robber.

    3rd Doctor

    • Monster of Peladon
    • Day of the Daleks
    • Planet of the Spiders.

    4th Doctor

    • Genesis of the Daleks
    • Pyramids of Mars
    • Masque of Mandragora
    • Talons of Weng Chiang
    • City of Death

    I don’t have any 5th, 6th of 7th Doctor favourites mostly because in those years I wasn’t really watching Dr Who  so we jump to AG Who with;

    9th Doctor

    • The Unquiet Dead
    • The Empty Child/Doctor Dances

    10th Doctor

    • The Christmas Invasion
    • Girl in the Fireplace
    • Gridlock
    • Human Nature/Family of Blood
    • Blink
    • Fires of Pompei
    • Planet of the Ood
    • Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
    • Turn Left

    11th Doctor

    • Eleventh Hour
    • Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
    • Vincent
    • The Lodger
    • A Good Man Goes to WAr
    • Closing Time
    • Widow and the Wardrobe
    • Asylum of the Daleks
    • The Snowmen
    • The Bells of ST Johns
    • Cold War
    • Name of the Doctor
    • Day of the Doctor and NIght of the Doctor.

    12th Doctor

    • Deep Breath
    • Robot of Sherwood
    • Listen
    • Time Heist
    • Mummy on the Orient Express
    • Dark Water/Death in Heaven
    • Last Christmas
    • Magicians Apprentice/Witch’s Familiar
    • Under the Lake
    • Face the Raven
    • Heaven Sent/Hell Bent.

Phew. That has to be my longest post ever and I am certain that I have missed a few especially of the older stories.

Thanks to the inspired person who started this. Listing favourites is always fun.

I have yet to watch Paddington. Back when the boys were young we used to watch the FilmFair Paddingtons. I had no idea how old they were at the time. They must have been on their tenth repeat at least. It was one of those kids’ series that transcended age.

Definitely won’t be watching the Steve Jobs film. I am rather tired of the hero worship of people simply because they succeed in making lots of money. Did enjoy Pirates of Silicon Valley though when I watched it at 2.00am one holiday a few years ago after a good many glasses of wine. Certainly had a “made for TV” vibe but was none the worse for that.

Unless I have missed something major there has been no actual news at to whether Capaldi is leaving has there? I am hoping he will stay for Chibnall’s first series. I would have thought that keeping the Doctor is less risky and given that the BBC are quite jittery at the moment I would think they would not want to take too much of a risk with their time travelling cash cow. Judging by the reactions on here it would be unwise. A new show runner is sufficient to deal with, without having to adjust to a new Doctor too. Moffat was not happy about having to introduce a new Doctor when he took over as show runner. Anyways I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed that P.C. will do at least one series with “Chibbers”. And I still have three more Doctors to get to complete my mini figure collection. I don’t need an extra Doctor to make it even more difficult. (We have become helplessly hooked on the mini figure surprise packs. The boys love them too. I already have some put away for next Christmas.)

I think different incarnations of the Doctor appeal to different people. There will always be some people who don’t like a particular actor, others who think that actor is the best. My boys prefer Capaldi to Matt Smith. I have talked to a lot of fans who are not keen on the direction that Moffat has taken the show. I have even met fans who did not like Tom Baker back in the day. Dr Who as a series, will always be changing, going through it own regenerations, change is what keeps it going.

Moffat has often said that he does not want to “go out” at the same time as the actor playing the Doctor so I have high hopes that Capaldi will do at least one series under Chibnall. Moffat has stated that he wasn’t happy about taking over with a new Doctor and companion. Clearly he was hoping that Tennant would stay on for one series to help him ease into the job before confronting the challenge of casting and introducing a new Doctor. I am also sure the BBC would not want to risk too much change at once again. (Just because Moffat pulled it off so well does not make it a wise thing to do.)

I am guessing that the reason this last season of Who was so late in the year is because they were planning to defer the next season until 2017 and were trying to ease the pain.

Stephen Moffat reminds me of a line from B.5. While all answers are replies not all replies are answers. He is the master of the reply that is not an answer. As one of those “who have tied themselves in knots” over the Orson/Danny mystery I am very happy to never have any resolution to the mystery. I have devised a solution that pleases me. I like there to be the occasional gap for the viewer to fill in. That way the fun lies.

I only just discovered this discussion. Face of Evil is a sentimental favourite of mine. I saw it either on first broadcast or first repeat. Whichever I was a keen new fan of the show when I first saw this and so it reminds me of those heady days. The story was fun and Tom Baker as has been observed in top form. The in-jokes reflect the confidence of actor and the production team. “Would you like a jelly baby.” Leela. “The evil one eats babies.”.

I wrote a paragraph about Leela but cut it because I was concerned it might qualify as spoilers so will post it later.

@bluesqueakpip It was indeed just a few years after Eric Von Daniken published Chariots of the Gods. My parents really loved that book and had long and quasi meaningful discussions about it with the next door neighbour. I had not thought about the connection. Well spotted.

@jphalmore Moffat has been “juggling” Sherlock for as long as he has been showrunner of Who. I am getting rather tired of that old “chestnut” being used again and again. In fact he seems to have found time to kick off a new series.

@puroandson  I enjoyed the story about “busty” the dog and the Account of Er.

I would disagree that this isn’t an “arc” story but the arc referred to goes back to SiL which I really want to re watch now. It is “arc-light” however as a Christmas special should be. It is intended to appeal to the casual seasonal viewer as well as us die hard fans. I think Moffat did and excellent job of juggling that. (I am a hopelessly sentimental fan of the Christmas specials) .

As to the materialist position on “Love” I wonder if it takes into account theories on Altruism. It is a materialistic theory, that we have evolved as instinctively altruistic because we are social beings and altruism and cooperation are essential for societies to function. Animals, especially those who live within some form of societal structure also display altruist behaviours.  The altruism of the rescue worker therefor does fit into a materialistic understanding, (or at least in my understanding of the theory of materialism.)

That was wonderful and Moffat lied, again. He promised us something lighthearted and fun so I just wasn’t prepared, the tissues were not at hand. I just love Moffat’s skill at turning the light and funny to tragic. He really is a remarkably skilled writer. I wondered how any Christmas Special could compete with last years which I thought was excellent but this was so different competition is unthinkable. The rest of the family loved it and there was much discussion after. This series has really “hooked” second son who was becoming rather disinterested in Who. @charmy, I think this has been a brilliant series and I don’t know your source of “Who” related info but everything I have read suggests that Capaldi is loving being the Doctor and happy to continue for years. Not sure everyone loves River Song either.

This was a fitting finale for River Song but that does not preclude her from appearing again. It would appear that it is the first and last time she meets Capdoc before Silence in the Library but there is always the possibility for her to appear post SiL as ghostRiver. I am sure that all depends upon the right script and availability of the actor.

Really want to watch again, and again. So many lovely details, witty lines and funny moments. At times our sound quality was not the best and it is very windy outside so missed a few lines too.

@miapatrick  I too felt rather apprehensive about the Christmas Special but trailers are always misleading. I don’t think being a standalone will slow our more dedicated theorists. I am certain Moffat enjoys providing just enough hints and clues/red herrings, to keep us all amused.

I have to confess to liking all of the Christmas Specials except the Titanic one. Kylie irritated me. The Widow and Wardrobe is one of my favourites, along with The Snowmen, Last Christmas and The Christmas Invasion, which is nearly all of them. Dervla Kerwen also turned into a Cyberking one Christmas. (The Next Doctor). I know her from the first three series of a quirky time travel comedy series, Goodnight Sweetheart. She was the publican’s daughter, later the publican, in wartime East end.

Your Carol night sounds wonderful. I have such a fondness for the traditional carols, with a few new additions thrown in. I have a Christmas selection which plays from the beginning of December until well into January when the family finally throw up their hands and say, “up with this we will not put”. The local carol night was cancelled due to the heatwave.

I have been avoiding posting, partly due to time restraints partly because I made the insane decision to read everyone’s’ posts first. (I am only half way down page five.) But I just had a rather insane idea. When the Doctor says he ran away with the President’s daughter I assumed he meant as in “eloped with” not abducted and took gallivanting through time and space with, (ie Susan because that has dubious connotations). Missy we know had a daughter. Maybe at some time he/she was President of Gallifrey and it was her daughter the Doctor eloped with.

Anyway, back to reading all the discussion, not sure I will have anything to add after thirteen pages other than some truly bonkers theories. I am sure eventually the posts will slow down and I will catch up.

    Cheers

Guitar playing is a much an eccentricity as flute playing. I see no reason at all why it is acceptable for the Doctor to play a recorder or dangle a yo yo but not strum an electric guitar. I also don’t think that playing the guitar is seen by anyone as “cool” any more. Wait, checking with random teenager, and yep, to quote, “if anything electric guitars are more old fashioned than anything else”. Incidentally those random teenagers loved the most recent series, old fashioned guitar not withstanding.

(sorry but getting rather tired of reading complaints about the Doctor’s latest choice of hobby.) Personally, like @nerys, I love it.

Hi all. I have been “distracted” of late and not had time to post at all. I have not even read through the first page of comments on Hell Bent.

@puroandson the kids Christmas film with Tom Hanks that you mentioned is Polar Express. I could not have told you that two hours ago. The boys were only just talking about it and I Imdb’d it then saw your post.

I hope “son” gets a find report. I am sure he will. I just saw R.3s English exam result and it was not good which is disappointing as he generally does really well in English. (Got a distinction in ICAS) but he was ill that week and ran out of time. Anyway the upshot is that I am not expecting a good report.

@missy, R.2, (17 yr old) who has been rather lukewarm about Dr Who in recent years has been bemoaning the lack of Who this Sunday. He really became very engaged with this latest series. The rest of the family enjoyed it to but, as R.2 often says, when it comes to Dr Who I am easily pleased.

    cheers

I am really looking forward to seeing River and Capdoc. I don’t think it will diminish the poignancy of her farewell with SmithDoc, (@arbutus) because to River each regeneration is a the same but different. I always thought that she was familiar with more than two incarnations of the Doctor and as she only met TennantDoc once.

Must say the trailer however did not excite me but it is not fair to judge by the trailer.

You posted while I was between reading and replying. Sorry for the repetition. You said what I was trying to say. That will teach me not to refresh the page more often.

@tardisgrade, (love the name btw that is one of my favourite images) I think the shooting demonstrated just how “out of the character” the Doctor was. He is breaking all of his own rules. He is deeply traumatised and angry. He is not “the Doctor”. When he picks up the velvet coat at the end it signifies that he is healed. He is taking back on the mantle of Doctor and all that goes with the name/title.

Personally I though it about time we saw some powerful women in Gallifrey. I understand that it is a deeply sexist as well as elitist society, which I find rather hard to equate with their great power and supposed “superiority”.

@Morpho welcome to our Who loving community. Don’t fear we tend to chase off the Daleks.

@mersey I also love Pictures at an Exhibition. I find most classical music difficult because I  associate it with childhood so it depresses me but that does not apply to most of the Russian composers. I had a soft spot for 1812 because I fell in love with War and Peace. Hard to be depressed by Vivaldi too not matter how often it was played on Mum’s tinny little radio. Another favourite piece is Respighi’s The Birds. I always include it in the Christmas mix because I keep hearing it just before our first son was born two weeks before Christmas.

@mudlark, I also really enjoy your posts. I would love to have studied Archaeology. I was muttering things under my breath yesterday when I discovered that my old Uni now run an Archaeology course.

One of the things that makes this forum so good is the Pub threads where we can talk about no Who related things. From my experience of other forums I have found that it is the off topic conversations that really knit the community.

@Puroandson and @starla  I feel like I am jumping into a conversation mid way so apologies but I was at a History Week workshop this morning discussing how to make history interesting for children so found your ideas very interesting. Australian Museums have been slow to follow the wonderful child friendly design of U.K museums. (I don’t recall any in Europe but suspect they are equally as good) In fact the British Museum children’s area made me wish I was a kid. I think the overall tactic we all agreed on was “hands on” and involving. It was also pointed out that adults are not so different from children really only we pretend to be interested they don’t. There was a woman there who was doing history honours online.. Umm tempted, tempted. I should be doing my dip ed but I really want to do a history masters…

I think that Australian history has slipped off the radar in recent years. There was a lot of interest in the 70s and early 80s but somehow the curriculum has done the subject a massive disservice in recent years. We do have history, mostly brief as pre’ “occupation” nothing was recorded but though brief it is colourful. My sons despise Australian history, or at least did until I gave them a very brief overview of some of the more dramatic aspects, ie convicts, frontier war, (though recent PMs would have it that that did not happen) and gold, on a long drive to the airport. By the time we arrived they were asking “why aren’t we taught this in school?”

    Cheers
