@mudlark I emailed my friend Debbie from Derby about your environmental post .
She told me that there is also blame on EU for all the floods they have had. She contends that since they
switched over to some sort of EU environmental plan to keep the rivers in undisturbed conditions that
its meant horrible floods they just have to accept .
Do you think there could be anything to that ?
2 July 2016 at 17:56 #53047LOL! You make me laugh . 🙂 Actually it has trailed off from half to about 44% . A lesser share.
But this also includes something called the Rotterdam-Antwerp effect. That is to say many of the exports
heading out from the UK to the EU are actually diverted to other parts of the world thru those
ports. Why? This is a direct manipulation of the trade to show that the EU is more important.
So the real adjustment is likely below 40%. It also helps to inflate the Dutch and Belgian
trade statistics. So can you really trust the trade figures?

Don’t forget that the Brexit means that the EU looses a lot too. Mainly cash. Lots and lots of it.
From the 5th largest economy in the world. The EU’s economy would still in trouble even if
there was no brexit. Half of all the investment in the UK still comes from other places . That
wont all suddenly go poof cause of the brexit. People do keep trying very hard to say that investment
will go out of Britain. Really? I think that’s a pipe dream. About 2/3 of the UK economy is still
domestic. The EU has been a shrinking market for the UK and in recent years the EU investment
into the UK has been shrinking. Interestingly, the investment from the USA has been increasing
but not as much as it could have because its been blocked from doing so by the EU. The UK is still the
EU’s largest export destination. They don’t want to loose that. Especially Germany. Of course they
are going to give you a trade deal. The next couple of years might be a bit turbulent. During this
time you need to start training excellent trade negotiators. I believe that the UK is going to be just fine.

I looked up Tony Gosling. He is responsible for the documentary. He was an investigative reporter
for the BBC. He has a radio show in London. He also has an interesting looking FB page that follows
British politics. I don’t think this doc is conspiracy theory thing although he does seem to believe
the EU is a social society experiment on behalf of elites that want to run everything. But part of me
thinks that’s true too.

No lobbying is not ever essential. Its a huge problem here in the States. I really hope we can do
something about getting money out of politics. It has a strangle hold on our politicians. The
NRA situation alone totally is disgusting. Cant even get a decent back round checks bill passed
in congress because so many congress folks are bought by NRA money. Same exact issue in the EU.
Exact issue! No difference. Corporations are making the rules for the EU just the way it has been
here. In fact, these rules are really about profits and not people. Yes Farage is a total ass. But
even that ass is onto something. I don’t like his rhetoric either. But he totally understands
that the UK is being screwed over. This video is a chunk of a larger documentary. I haven’t had the
time to view the whole thing yet. Hoping to get into it this weekend. I’d be interested
to know your buddy’s opinion about this too. Anyone’s for that matter. Free trade is trade left to
its natural course. The EU does NOT practice free trade. That’s why all the regulations. They
control trade thru all these different tricks that they implement. Like Debbie says, the EU
wants all the people to think they are totally awesome sauce. But the reality is actually a bit sinister.
I just read that Gove says if he is elected PM he wont trigger the article 50 this year which is probably
good. The UK shouldn’t make things easy for the EU on this exit. That’s not how you get the best deal.

I just was chatting with my friend Debbie about our conversation on the forum about Brexit.
She is an Oncologist in Derby and tells me that the EU also effects the salary and schedules
of Doctors in the UK. Her family are sheep farmers around Lincolnshire and the sell the wool
to make clothes. Regulations from the EU has crippled her families business. She posted this
video to me about why almost everyone she knows voted for the Brexit. Here it is and its
very enlightening.

I didn’t take any offense. I know a lot of folks living around the midlands part of the UK.
They said the open borders situation was putting pressure on them in various ways.
They anticipate taking some financial hits in the near term. But regarding the EU redevelopment
grants like the 1 in Sunderland the feeling was that the UK sends the EU far more than
they get back in the way of these grants. Free trade within this union helps all the big corporations but
hurts all the small business with over regulation. Basically, these folks just don’t want the EU telling them
how to run the UK anymore. In Australia you don’t have China telling you how to regulate
yourself in spite of living in a global economy. It boiled down to an issue of over reach on the part
of the EU all over the UK.
As far as economic recovery / immigration goes in Australian elections, I can understand why
Labor is backing off those topics after Brexit. Its a tricky argument.

Absolutely not! In fact I see the EU as trying to be that. Their grand experiment.
It was originally supposed to be only about trade and it morphed itself into some
totally different sort of platform that is being run by unelected bureaucrats that get paid
outrageous salaries. I saw the euro plunged again today. They cant seem to get a handle
on how to handle their monetary policy. They are losing the UK which means a lot of
assets that helped prop them up. The whole system is going to fracture .
The EU also just paid out something like $20 billion to Portugal a few days ago.
A few years ago they gave France 22 billion. A lot of that money that came from the UK.
Who knows what more they will need to do for Greece and Italy. The EU cant keep trying to live
this way on other peoples money. They think if you are in the union then its ok to redistribute funds.
These countries have lost their self governance on immigration and financial matters. That
would be ok if this was truly an elected government by all the people. But its not.
Btw for those that will say that I should use better sources for my information I say go to any source
you prefer you’ll still find the same facts.

seems to me that it will only get worse for the euro. I think there have been several polls that show
EU skepticism is growing. Time will tell but it seems credible to me.

countries are proof. They are all melting down. I think the UK will come out of this fine.
Whether or not the kingdom stays together will be interesting but for me your amazing
history absolutely proves that you can be totally Great Britain again and without the EU world !

Welcome to the new world where you cant be protected by the EU. But wait, the EU
is so broken now that you will probably be better off in this new world. You send
them 12+ billion and then they turn around and send you back 4+ billion of YOUR own
money as tokens to make some improvements. I simply don’t understand that equation.
You got all these British people that felt that the EU is threatening their way of life.
They felt that the EU was broken and not easy to fix. So maybe its time to dive into making your
own deals. There could also be more advantages too?
BTW- From other articles I’ve read there are many other countries in the EU that want to
take the same deal as the UK. Your only the first but probably not the last. That’s why the EU
wants to make an example of the UK. The EU bureaucrats are probably scared shitless.

I really do understand all of these points. My point is that this may in fact be a good
outcome for the UK. I just posted a link to an article above showing there is already
lots of other countries that are extremely interested in new trade deals with the UK.
While the UK was part of the EU they were essentially barred from doing these deals.
I think the UK will have a tough patch to get thru for a time but with new trade deals they
can bring so much new money back to their country. Some of these countries seem really
anxious to implement big trade deals. India has been trying for years to do a deal with the EU.
That market alone is so enormous. Seems like there could be so much symmetry just between those
countries. Doesn’t look to me like the rest of the world wants to let the UK flounder in the way the EU
wants to do. Doesn’t seem like some other countries want the UK to be left out in the cold.
The EU maybe the real loser. That is my only message.

The EU isn’t your only trade partner. The UK has been sending 12+ billion to the EU and
getting back 4+billion in investment. The EU has consistently blocked trade agreements
between the UK and the US and you trade just as much and more with other countries.
There will be a new trade deal with the US and other countries to be sure. For now the
focus has to be unraveling yourself from the EU. I don’t think you ever signed the Schengen
Agreement. So please tell me why the UK has been made to feel compelled to accept that policy?
Still think your opportunities outside of the EU will be excellent. Not right away. The next few
years will make you all feel vulnerable. Given the fact that having greater access to US and other
markets because the EU cant do anything to block this anymore is to your advantage.

possibly gained by this EU connection. What makes everyone think the EU rules are better then UK

I believe they are trying to intimidate you the same way they have done to Greece. I don’t think
the Brexit means that your future has been taken away from you. I still believe the EU is in a chaos
dilemma and in any chess game that should mean that its a fluid situation that the UK can take
advantage of.

It may be like the quota system that the Swiss have implemented. I don’t think they want to
restrict the movement of retirees or students.
Still think that the EU will negotiate with the UK. Because it comes down to the economics the way
always does. I know a bit about political economics. In the end the EU needs the UK more
than UK needs the EU if you take into account the surplus Germany runs from doing business
with the UK. You cant convince me that they wont do some deal.

to its Army’s accountability and their resistance to EU reforms. Didn’t Merkel say that about
free movement months ago before the Brexit vote? Well she might have a change of heart on
that when and if it comes down to how the loss of access between the 2 markets effects her economy.
Don’t forget your banks are in much better shape then her banks. Her banks are basically broke.
Lets see how hard she sticks to that so called ‘non negotiable’ point.

Markets seem to be up everywhere today. Why? It seems the analysis of a Brexit deal is
beginning to change. The UK may come out of this much better than you’ve been thinking.
What’s wrong with taking back aspects of your national authority that was ceded to
the bureaucracy of the EU? Seems to me you are in a powerful position right now to negotiate.

My sincere condolences to all of you on the outcome of the vote! I have friends that are extremely
special to me that live in the midlands between Derby and Leicester. Their families go back many
generations with ancestors from Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. Some were in trades others
farmers and still are. I knew they were ALL going to vote for the Brexit. Their reasoning ?
Definitely a reactionary backlash against the austerity and cuts to services as much as any
immigration issue. Your assessment around the government being out of touch is spot on.
Of course this is also here in the States too. Mostly the red states. Kansas and Michigan are
examples of what sever austerity has been doing. I’m hoping that when we go to the polls that
ultimately the majority will not end up voting against their own interests (meaning for the republicans)
But also, I hope that the EU will realize that they also need to evolve a bit too. Otherwise that
domino effect that is feared will surely become a reality.
I still think the fact that the EU is broke might give the UK a powerful negotiating tool to possibly
avoid a complete exit. They will suffer as much as you will if you go forward with a divorce.
The timing of this is horrible for them.
But that could be just a pipe dream – who knows.

I think I might feel a tiny regret butting into this conversation however I am curious about something
when you vote tomorrow. It seems to me that Norway and Switzerland are doing fine and aren’t
in the EU. It also appears that the EU is going broke. They have been issuing bonds with negative
interest rates. So what I’m wondering is apart from the other Brexit/Bremain issues , why would
the British people want to stay a part of this broken system? From my vantage point it looks like
the EU is taking advantage of your still solvent economy and not really delivering back to you equal
significant value although I could be wrong? I understand about the other ‘grand EU scheme’ issues.
They are really great and noble notions. But just on the economic issue its confusing.
I believe, although I could be wrong about this, it seems that the EU needs the UK more than the
UK needs the EU on a financial basis.
Seems to me that it puts you in a brilliant negotiating position to pretty much get whatever deals
you might want if you end up voting for the exit. Its the EU that is in the tougher position.
So, can you explain to me if I am wrong in this regard – why ?

I ‘ve been catching up somewhat on all your comments. I disagree with those that don’t
appreciate gardening. IMHO anyone that has time to do anything else isn’t gardening
enough. Btw a favorite FB page is “the Empress of Dirt” for great gardening ideas.
However I actually haven’t been able to spend as much time as I would like in my own garden
recently. 🙁 Too busy with teaching and volunteering for Democratic party with the
California primary coming up on June 7th. June is a big month for UK with the Brexit vote
too and I’m following that closely. I really hope the GOP gets destroyed this November!
There I’ve said it. I want to clean the toilet out. They have been crumbling for years now
and that is why they now have a lunatic as the candidate. I’m leaning as a Hillary supporter.
but I could vote for Sanders. They both have some issues for me. My only problem with Sanders
is all the ‘free’ stuff he wants to get passed thru. TBH I don’t believe he will be able to overcome the
design of our government to do that. I cant see him being able to build the coalitions he needs.
This isn’t a parliamentary system here. Just not confident that he can do that. Hillary has been better
to me at making her points.

During the Matt Smith Doctor times around the time of Elisabeth Sladen’s passing I had the
notion that it might be great to take Luke around on a few trips? A companion who was the
former companions kid and so he and the Doctor could share memories? Plus Luke was
bright, imaginative and a good role model for younger fans that have a bit of an issue with
an older Doctor, maybe? I felt that had nice symmetry. Or possibly an adult version of Luke?
I just like it when threads run thru the various Doctor’s story arcs. It’s been a successful strategy
seeing some of the other old characters return. So how about a new companion that has a
connection to an old companion?
Actually, I’m ok with any new companion. TBH I was really having Clara fatigue because
I just simply liked her a lot better with Smith Doc.

Don’t weep. I’m not going to score SM.
But I did prefer his stuff to most of the other stuff he allowed to be episodes during his time.
The exceptions being Mathieson and Dollard. Gaiman and Chibnall were ok too.
Mostly I really liked the way SM handled the Doctor’s major arc story during his term.
Having said that its not going to be hard for me to give myself over to the changes.
I cant begin to imagine who the new Doctor will be but I wouldn’t mind if they gave the
8th Doctor one more new season. Cause you know what? I think he’d be fantastic!
Whoever it is though I don’t expect to feel terribly let down.

The gap years were when there were no episodes from the BBC
Daily motion has all the Who episodes from all the Doctors although there might be a few
holes. Just type in Doctor Who and the episode in the search bar. You might probably have to do
some navigating around and deal with a few commercials but I just mute the sound then 🙂
The ‘Sleep No More’ episode was my least fav of the season. But 2 of my most fav
episodes were the Missy stories. I hope with all these new changes that they don’t
decide to also change her! That would just make me very sad.
26 January 2016 at 20:44 #50540Its tougher to interpret all of what these episodes are telling us on a first viewing.
Sometimes we miss stuff. She’s a smart girl and I don’t think I should underestimate
why she follows Dr. Who. But she has found Capaldi’ term less satisfying then the previous
Doctors. Even though he was the right choice for a lot of us he just wasn’t maybe rosy and cheery
enough for others? I know that seems astonishingly odd but there it is.
I liked Rose as much as any of the other companions. In fact combining her with
Bad Wolf and the Moment at least for me gave the character a lot of diversity and I liked
the way she played all of them.

Well I have a theory about all these changes. I would like to humbly suggest that the recent Capaldi
seasons are not really satisfying the ‘young adult demographic’ which seems extremely important
to the BBC. That’s probably 1 reason for this decision to make the ‘Class’ spin off series? Just my
speculation. I have to say I have spoken with my teen to 20 something nephews and nieces that follow
Dr. Who. They all have not been as impressed with Capaldi as we have been here. They think the show
is also a bit (dare I say it) broken and seem glad for changes. One of my nieces said to me “how
can I get scared about some blobly monsters?” meaning Zygons. So there is a disconnect.
Anyway, I’ve loved SM’s story arcs and he had the best episodes for me of all the writers
of the past few years.
He is definitely leaving CC lots of juicy and/or meaty places to go on with the epic.

I think to short that market. Looks to me like all the shorts are having a party in the
stock markets again right now! I think it got reasonable reviews.
Also, the stuff about Clara’s grandmother, that was just a hopeful notion. Although
I feel that River’s comment about being connected to Clara is still basically unresolved.
I understand the ‘dream’ connection but I’ve never been comfortable with that idea.
I watched the movie “The Man Who Fell to Earth’ again last night. Really great!
I read somewhere someone pointing out that in the “Waters of Mars’ episode
the base was called the “Bowie’ station. A nice tribute!

River and Clara not been resolved yet? So we know Clara became something ‘new’
but where did we all decide that she started from again? I’m still feel left hanging about
that River and Clara link and also since we all were sharing so many great theories about
what it was that made Clara so special. Quite honestly in the end it’s a thing bugging me
a lot . Only because I was so certain there would be more to the front end of the Clara story.
Just saying it still doesn’t all add up for me and that I still feel there has to be more.

Clara as River’s second wife which might be why the Doctor reminds River of her?
I like that! So that means River recognized Clara in the “conference call’ as her
wife but that hadn’t happened for Clara yet. lol Love the timey whimey!
The thing I feel about River is that she hasn’t changed who she is from the time she
was hatched. Clara has changed a lot! You can make many character connections
between the two but Clara always felt to me a bit like she was ‘bigging herself up’
and River never came off artificial in that respect to me because having some TL in you
lends yourself to actually being that way . So I guess I’m saying River seemed more
authentic (?) somehow compared to Clara for me. Its like some folks are on a quest
for wonderfulness (Clara) and others are born with that (River). I think- maybe?
Plus what @ichabod just said about the time lord notion of deep friendship is a great
perspective on this too.

Well I have to admit to being a teensy bit sloshed and everything seemed REALLY funny .
Guess I had a “Missy” moment where strange things seems awfully amusing only
mostly to her? 🙂

changes the people that are having the regeneration and they don’t always go
younger. The Doctor certainly hasn’t. I don’t think you an predict that. However,
as with Missy I think there are some gender quirks and also some new preferences
and tastes. So I can agree to an extent that we may have a fresh take on the General
but as to how he/she becomes a new sort of a General is not clear to me. How the basic
regime on Galifrey might change now that Rassilon and his council are expelled
has been given some new wiggle room for this General and should probably make another
very interesting episode though.
