@geoffers the sad thing is that so many people do think masculinity is that fragile… or I could say that some people’s masculinity is so fragile – or even that the nature of masculinity in a patriarchal society is by definition fragile, since a lot of people (including a lot of writers in the early modern period) were dependent on the support of…[Read more]

@nerys – I would say Graham qualifies, wouldn’t you?
but graham is emasculated (i.e. not the main character), powerless (depends on a women for safety), and subservient (even to the ghost of his wife)…
/s (just to be clear!)
ugh, i made myself sick, just with that bit of role-play. deffo wouldn’t make a good actor… :-/

And, as for “who gives a shit”? I do
Indeed. Whether a degree, undergraduate or post-graduate, post-doc, doctorate or PhD these are all necessary to expertise. Also, just for what I call “knowledge for knowledge sake.”
That leads to great dialogue, conversation, inspiring thought processes and personal goals
Puro.

Gotta love a bit of Copeland.
If you can find Howard Goodalls contextualising of Variations On a Shaker Hymn it is a fun listen (I think it was part of his Story of Music series).
BTW @Thane16 The Statistical Outlier, have you seen Ready Player One? It a bit of a hoot (though two moments that rattled my suspension of disbelief), but it…[Read more]

@nerys Yes I caught that too. She did ask for cash.
@mudlark yes the theme was very much about loss and how we handle that and I think Ryan’s loss of his grandmother and the absent father will be an ongoing “concern” of this series. There may be no ongoing story arc as such but I think there will be ongoing themes and character development arcs.…[Read more]

Just spent a lazy afternoon reading this thread from start to finish. Really enjoyed some of my favorite Forum writers’ contributions. I’ve been missing the Doctor, especially Capaldi’s Doctor. Thank you @wolfweed @jimthefish @drben @ichabod @missrori @mudlark @winston @missy @nerys @bluesqeakpip and I really appreciated the new voice of @gamerg…[Read more]

That’s fair enough. Not everyone liked PC. You cannot help how you feel.@nerys:
I realize that for most, this question doesn’t have a rational answer, because our love for the series isn’t imbedded in the rational, but in the emotional. So it’s hard to pinpoint why we want and need certain things from whatever it is we love,…[Read more]

It was not so long ago that the Twelfth Doctor was fumbling with Clara’s index cards containing her notes on human social cues he’s supposed to heed. Has he really finally picked up on those clues?
I’d agree there’s something of a disconnect there. I think that’s more about the cuecards than his sensitivity at present though. I was cri…[Read more]

You can see why none of the modern Doctors last more than three seasons-plus-specials when you compare them at the beginning and end of their run. I swear, they all of them look ten years older, not three or four.
Not to mention the back operations, knee operations…

The numbers weren’t changed because The War Doctor did not consider himself worthy of the lineage.

@nerys The article was written and posted before the Christmas special aired, and isn’t discussing it with regards to the endings of Clara and Bill. The author is just referring to their respective fates in “Hell Bent” and “The Doctor Falls” — both women die, at least in a metaphorical sense, and the Doctor isn’t able to do anything for them as…[Read more]

Yes, the regeneration scene (and a couple of other brief scenes) survive. The regeneration scene survives because the children’s programme Blue Peter did a piece on Doctor Who – and included that clip from Tenth Planet. When it came to the Great BBC Wiping of Tapes, Blue Peter’s formidable editor, Biddy Baxter, was having none of it. Blue…[Read more]

@nerys was that Hartnell in the regeneration scene? Yes. I believe it’s the only bit of Part 4 of 10th Planet that survives. In his 2005 British Film Institute book on Doctor Who, Kim Newman, however, argues that “the close-up was so close and the average TV set so small it was quite hard to read the difference between the Doctor’s faces and v…[Read more]

@scaryB Oh, I agree that the show seems like a perfect way to tell younger viewers about the Christmas truce, I only wonder if they are aware, even after having seen it, that it was a real event. Hopefully, they will have parents who know of it, or it will inspire them to find out about it in a book.

Hey @nerys!
You’re definitely not alone. Remember more than 1/2 the voters didn’t vote for Trump. Doubt they are all thinking they should have voted for him afterall! Also feel very strongly that many who did vote for him thinking “anything but Hillary” are deeply regretting that move.
As for the ‘kind’ part, thanks for that. It’s aspirational…[Read more]

@nerys and @juniperfish—
I must admit that I have to share a bit of Clara-fatigue in the current rewatch. Jenna is great but Clara is definitely hard work. (I’m sure part of it is because I could never quite forgive her for not being Amy though.) While still disagreeing with ‘waaah it’s just the Clara Show now’ buffoons, I definitely to get the…[Read more]

@nerys Yes, like you, I relaxed once Bill arrived!
However, I am appreciating the tricky and difficult Clara/ Twelve dynamic more now that I have begun a S9 rewatch. In hindsight all the tarot card speculation makes complete sense not just for the Doctor with his re-birth/ return to Gallifrey, but for Clara, with her re-birth as a time-traveller…[Read more]
