I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of @htpbdet.

It was always a joy to read his articles or wild theories on here! He conveyed a great sense of wisdom and respect and it’s a rare thing that somebody on the internet can do that. I only knew him from the beginning of this year but it was an absolute pleasure and privilege to do so.

His absence will be sorely missed in this small corner of the web and I’m happy he got to be with the ones he loved so much in his last days

I just booked my tickets for our local Cineworld showing and I’m left feeling slightly betrayed for two reasons,

1) My wife and (now 14y/o) son have both said they don’t want to go and see it 😮
2) Our local cinema is probably the most tired and outdated one around but the only one for miles and miles. The cheek is that they are charging a £2 premium on top of the normal 3D surcharges for something that will be being shown at the same time on TV for free!

I did have a look at cinemas further afield and they were similarly expensive (actually more so) and was disappointed to see that none of them were doing any special promos or events for it. Not even in Matt Smith’s home town of Northampton! Seems like another unfair cash grab from the bigwigs 👿

I shall console myself in the fact that I will still be taking my 2 younger and more impressionable sons and smuggle in jammie dodgers and jelly babies under my coat to avoid the foyer prices!

I did notice the official synopsis on all of the cinema sites say this

All this talk of cinemas and the trailer is getting me a little bit over-excited!

I remember seeing the Series 6 trailer at the cinema in 3D – it was the main reason I went to see the film because I knew that they were showing the it before.

Doctor Who, on a big screen, in 3D and, something people forget, with the fantastic audio blasting. I can’t think of a better way to spend a night in late November!

I was unde the impression that the screenings would be a one-off to be “simulcast” (I hate that word) at the same time as the TV showing. I suppose it makes sense that the cinemas will re-screen it afterwards but I can’t imagine them doing it before!

Come to think of it, my brother works for a cineworld and normally gets to watch all the films before they are officially released. I wonder how early cinema staff could view TDotD? Could be very difficult to avoid spoilers if that’s the case, so perhaps they’ll delay the cinema screening time???

I loved this trailer, unfortunately my YouView TV box doesn’t let you record adverts, just the scheduled programmes!
Luckily I had paused it just before so I was able to rewind and rewatch until my wife told me to hurry up so we could get Atlantis over with (which btw was a very dull episode this week)!

My first impression was “CLUES!!!” but on second watch I felt the images are just a jumble in the Doctor’s timeline. Mostly for nostalgia purposes. I doubt what we saw in this appetite-whetter was anything like how the special episode will actually look.

I was surprised to see Clara featured so prominently and her godforsaken leaf is still floating around! Also, there seemed to be sonic weapon overload, so I guess that’s what he’ll be using to escape his timestream

My overall impression was that it was over way too quickly, I could have done with a 10 minute extended cut, with more slo-mo!

As the BBC Director General mentioned a few days ago, the BBC will soon enable people to buy programmes directly from iPlayer, that way they don’t need to pay Apple their 30% of the download cost (although I’m not sure if that announcement would include archive shows?)

In the meantime, iTunes is the most popular and established video distribution platform enabling a way for fans to get these episodes immediately. I don’t really understand why there is such a fuss about it? The BBC actually made the right choice for once!

In 10 years time people will laugh at conversations about how we managed our video libraries. I imagine that people will just have access to absolutely any video ever digitised for about £10 per month as part of an “Entertainment” subscription.

One question I was wondering about. Now the episodes are going to all start being over 50 years old, does that make the copyright go into the public domain or am I getting confused with old laws? :-S

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed following all the email updates I was getting from this and the news thread last night.

It was such a pleasure seeing so much positive and excited activity on here since the lack-of-news-drought from after the last series finished. I wasn’t particularly bothered about the lost episodes personally (as most of the pre-McCoy eps are practically lost to me!) but I got an unexpected pleasure from seeing so many doolally fans on here acting like kids on Christmas morning 😀

Hopefully one day I will watch go back and watch all of the classic episodes so I’m really pleased that these new episodes have shown up and it holds out hope that there may be other lost episodes out there somewhere.

Loving all the sci-fi/fantasy on TV at the moment!

Agents of SHIELD is fairly amusing family viewing but it hasn’t really enamoured itself too me yet. Seems a bit too “American” if you know what I mean. All glossy hair-styles and cheesey dialogue. I’m hoping it rises above itself and develops into something a bit more than light entertainment. The more it distances itself from Wheedon the better IMHO.

It reminds me a lot of Torchwood in the early days (minus the sex and weevils obviously!). The thing I like most is watching my sons pick up on all the Marvel references in it. There faces light up with glee when they here a characters name or the Hydra reference in last Fri’s episode.

I enjoyed the 2nd episode of Atlantis too. It seems to be sticking fairly rigidly to the Merlin formula, which is not a bad thing per-se but they seem to be using the same sets and locations too. My wife said “I’m sure I saw that rock in Merlin” :D. Poor Medusa with her inescapable destiny 🙁

I managed to catch the first episode of Orphan Black last night. I loved the style of it and looking forward to seeing how the rest of it plays out. Not too keen on the foster-brother character, he seems a bit of a stereotype but I did have to laugh at him a couple of times. The U.S./U.K. blend seems a lot better than Starz did with the Torchwood cast.

I’m still enjoying Under the Dome too. I like how lingering questions seem to get answered quite rapidly rather than arching over the whole series (or sometimes not at all, ahem Moffat). I just need to avoid spoilers now I think the first series is over in the States

It’s great for people who just want to browse and see what’s going on in the world as it happens but you get a lot more out of it once you start following like-minded people rather than all the “celebrities”.

I enjoy having a quick search for Doctor Who after an episode has aired to get all the instant reactions from people but I refrain from live-tweeting as it tends to take you out of the episode too much.

@shazzbot They filmed Enigma at Chicheley Hall which is near where I live and they held auditions for extras in my town. It was a really fun day even though it’s mainly hanging around in costume from 8am-8pm! Still not bad getting £100 for that :).

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the film. I wanted to get it on blu ray now I have an HD TV but it doesn’t seem to be available anymore. You’d need the hi-def to spot me! I’m right at the end playing cricket while the credits roll up. My mother-in-law can be seen pushing a bike around in some outdoor scenes. My wife can be spotted looking aghast when Dougray swears out loud in the house.

I’d love to be an extra in Doctor Who but I think they probably only bother hiring professionals

The BBC have revealed some details about their programming for the Fiftieth Anniversary celebrations, which will include:
• The Anniversary Special itself, which has been named The Day of the Doctor and will be 75 minutes long.
• The 90 minute drama An Adventure in Space and Time
• A Culture Show special by Matthew Sweet, entitled Me, You and Doctor Who
• A BBC Radio 2 documentary entitled Who is Doctor Who
• A repeat run of a restored version of the very first story, An Unearthly Child, on BBC Four
Exact times will be revealed at a later date.

Digital spy says

The special extended episode, due to air on November 23, could potentially be the biggest-ever global simulcast of a drama and could fetch more than 100 million viewers from 200 territories.

A simulcast will mean that fans outside of the UK won’t get episode details spoiled or leaked before they are able to watch it.

As the episode is due to air in the evening in the UK, viewers in LA could be watching at midday, while fans in Sydney would get an early morning broadcast on Sunday morning (November 24)

@albertnoel Any reasons you would like to give why you want to see Clara go? The actress has stated in an interview that she’s looking forward to playing a normal human companion in the new series rather than “The Impossible Girl”.

I was glad to hear her say that as I think her previous character arc hasn’t quite let her story grow as naturally as it has with other companions. She’s a good actress IMHO and I think she’s been a lot of fun to watch with Matt.

@zurramsines We don’t even know what cinemas are going to be showing it in the UK yet! The only thing that has been confirmed is that the show will be the largest simulcast ever, showing in numerous countries at exactly the same time.

Hopefully we’ll here some news soon. I think the atmosphere in the cinema will be electric. However, the trouble with cinema is that there’s no sofa to hide behind!

@nick I’m saying time travel couldn’t be used as a weapon because the assumption I had was that all of the fighters were outside of time. A 5th dimension if you like. They can’t travel back in time to change anything because they have already removed themselves from time by the very nature of being on the battlefield

In regards to what @nick was saying about The Doctor’s Wife. IIRC the Doctor states that the junkyard is in a “Bubble” universe, i.e. it is stuck on to this universe only. To use my analogy again, this bubble universe is like a sticking plaster on a crack in the pipe. It is outside the main flow of time but can see it all passing by and reach in and grab stuff every now and again.

This is different to the “Pocket” universe as seen in “Hide”. That is more of an air bubble running through the pipe that will pop sooner or later!

I think I now have universe fatigue :/

@shazzbot You asked me about my Hurt Doctor theory on the companions page but I’m replying here to try and keep on topic (even though The Next Doctor seems to be about Hurt & Capaldi at the same time #wibblywobbly)!

But … is the Hurt Doctor outside the timeline of the universe? He’s hidden away in the 2.something percent of the Doctor’s mind that the Cyber Controller couldn’t reach. Does that constitute being outside the universe’s timeline?

Yes, I’m saying that Hurt Doctor only “lived” inside the void/vortex/outside time. Which means he never really existed. I’m not sure if the 2% that the Cyber-controller couldn’t read was Hurt, or the Doctor’s name, or something else; his wi-fi password perhaps?

Also, we are perhaps presuming too much about Hurt (and everything in general!). If he is a time war era regeneration it doesn’t mean he was the only one. If the Timelords cancelled the regen-limit then the Doctor could have re-generated 1000s of times before escaping/ending the war (mulitple-Doctor theory alert!). It also means that, as he was outside time, it doesn’t count as a tangible regeneration, i.e. it won’t affect the numbering.

Having the “Time War” outside of time also explains why Time Travel can’t be used as a weapon, i.e. you can’t swim to another point in a river if you aren’t in the water!

However, I now have a brain-knot over how the “vortex” or whatever relates to parallel universes/dimensions. Presumably, on Rose’s parallel Earth, there are no timelords/Gallifrey or at least whatever happens in one universe’s time-stream doesn’t affect a parallel time-stream? I’m not sure, which is part of the reason I dislike parallel dimensions being part of Who!

I guess (thinking out loud here) that we could imagine each universe as a water pipe.
• Normal people can’t get out of their own pipe (i.e. universe) and there is a void space outside of all the pipes.
• We can get cracks in the pipes that potentially mean something could leak out and go into another pipe (like Rose did).
• Someone with the correct ability, perhaps a plumber (i.e. Timelord/Dalek) can move outside the pipe into the void. Anything the plumber does in the void can’t affect the pipe. He has to go back into the pipe at some point (maybe a different place/time) to make any changes.
• Therefore, a whole gang of plumbers can have a war in the void space, flying around in their white vans, killing each-other and get blocked from returning. This means the battle is still going on as they never return to the pipe. The pipe meanwhile, is blissfully unaware of what is happening outside, except for a distinct lack of plumbers!.

I think (for what its worth) that Rose gave Clara the number in the shop; that Clara sees an illustration of Rose in the History of the Time War (“so that’s who…”), and that Rose and Doc10 will be intersecting with at least tBoSJ, but maybe other episodes too.

That’s an interesting thought but gets me starting to think about paradoxes, or rather how the events from The Name of the Doctor will affect what we have already seen on screen

If it is Rose that Clara saw in the shop, and Time war book, surely that would mean that Doctor 11 would have known that he saw Rose again in the future. Therefore, he wouldn’t be that worried about the events going on in TNotD because he would know (from reading/writing the book) that Rose was part of it, and presumably know how she got there. Could the book be a living document written by the Tardis? Perhaps it is made of Psychic paper so will show different things to different people.

I’m not sure if that makes sense, I could ramble on more but not sure it would be of any value!

I did a whole load of designs for an early draft when the concept and story was quite radically different from what finally got shot, but I’m not going to post them here as I think perhaps both the original creature and original story idea might well be resurrected at a later date…it was a very cool idea.

The original idea had the ‘hider’ more as a twisted human, but as the story evolved it became more like some other dimensional creature, not warped but just the result of a different evolution

We know from Human Nature/Family of Blood that ‘John Smith’ could have had human children. If his granddaughter Susan had been chameleon arched, Clara could be her entirely human daughter.

I never thought of that. If she was conceived by a chameleon-arched parent would she really be 100% human or be a timelord with some kind of biological chameleon arch?

So, the question still is “WHO IS CLARA!?”

Just when we thought we had it all figured out she becomes even more of a mystery!

IIRC did somebody do a list of who/what Clara could be from earlier on in the series? It would be good to revisit that if anyone can retrieve it.

My only issue with Clara being related to the Doctor is that she doesn’t regenerate when she dies. Of course, this could be because whenever we saw her die it was just a Claricle or she was Chameleon-arched, meaning her time-ladyness was removed. Even so, the Doctor seems to have done as many background checks on her as possible so I think he would’ve had an inkling. The Chameleon-arc and ganger’s are both annoyingly convenient answers to things so I’d prefer to not see them again.

I think the more likely explanation is the one in plain sight (and one I think I have discussed previously). Clara is his “Nanny” i.e. hired help to look after the Doctor. She started off as normal but was steered/trained into meeting the Doctor by outside forces. I’m hoping the outside forces would be the Doctor’s mother. Knowing she can’t take care of him from her time-locked prison, she manages to get someone else to. She could have set this up during her brief escape in the DT’s final episodes (I know she isn’t named as his mother but that is what I believe)

On a side note, to all those speculating about River being pregnant, although it’s a nice idea I’m not buying it. Amy & Rory’s story-line seems well and truly over. It certainly feels like it was about a decade ago to me. I can’t see their family tree extending any more

Not available in the UK yet (!?). I think this is way overpriced, about £30 per series, especially as most fans will have some of the episodes on disc already (if not recorded straight from the TV!). However, I wouldn’t be upset if one ended up under my Christmas tree 😉

@dementeddalek Unfortunately I don’t think any other events have been announced regarding the screening of the 50th.
It is supposed to be in cinemas across the country so I’m sure whichever town you end up in there will be a queue full of Whovians outside the local cinema!
The BBC will probably also show it on it’s “Big Screens” which are usually in the parks/city centres of major cities

I suppose I didn’t mean Sherlock Holmes as he can be to Mr Clever for his own good. I think I meant more in the writing, a puzzle that can be solved with an idea rather than a magic (sonic) button.

The TARDIS tour in JttCotT was certainly a good appetiser but was a bit of a cop-out to what most fans were expecting. Thanks for reminding me about the Time War book, I forgot all about that.

In regards to the “standalone” comment, yes I think the whole of Series 7 was billed as standalone episodes with it’s movie style posters. It’s probably just my own over-analysing of each episode but it made me feel like they were taking something away from Clara by giving her the Impossible Girl label immediately.

I may be thinking ahead of myself but here are a few things I would like to see from the new Doctor/Series8

• The Doctor using his mind more. More than his sonic screwdriver anyway. I don’t mean in a techno-babble way but rather more of a Sherlock Holmes way. Perhaps he should give a sonic to Clara so they can still have the toys

• A new companion. I really like Clara and I think she has a lot more to do but I’m struggling to think of a good (i.e. bonkers) enough theory for how she could survive the anniversary without needing a Donna style mind-wipe. Either way, an extra companion would be great. It’s always nice to see the Doctor’s friends gang up on him 🙂

• Another regular room in the TARDIS. It would be great to see a “den” in the Tardis where the Doctor comes to see his companion for a comfy chat on the sofa, rather than always standing up in the console room.

• A Time Lady. It’s probably the most logical answer to why the 12th Doctor wasn’t a woman and that’s because Moff wanted to feature a Time Lady as a major part of series 8. I’m not sure if I’d prefer the return of a classic character or someone new. I suppose it depends if some event in the 50th points to the Timelords escaping the void. @juniperfish I don’t like your idea of The Master coming back, not as a woman anyway, I’d prefer a fresh character with a different backstory

• A subtle arc/”Big Bad”. I love standalone episodes rather than two-parters (although I don’t mind the odd one) but I was disappointed how the story of the Impossible Girl lost momentum and seemed to drag on too long. Bad Wolf and Vote Saxon were both great subtle arcs that didn’t intefere with the weekly episodes but when they reached a climax it was a great pay-off and wanted to make you watch all the episodes again!

• River Song. I’m sad to think that her time may have come to a close in The Name of the Doctor. We’ve seen her birth/death and a lot of inbetween. However, I’d want to see one last appearance of her, just to see what her relationship with 12 would be like
