I just heard that Ripper Street has been cancelled and there will be no more episodes after next week’s finale.

This is such a shame, the writing, characters and production was so well done I may have to start a petition! The BBC cited lack of viewers as the main reason as well as competition from “I’m a Celebrity…”. Do the BBC really think they should make more shows like IAC rather than quality dramas?!? <insert license fee grumble here>

RE: Timelords being released; This would have consequences

If timelords did return wouldn’t they kill the Doctor? Could they go back in time and stop him from locking them up or is that a fixed point?

What if they are already dead? Now the Master is locked up with them he could have killed them all!

What if the Doctor is able to free the Gallifreyans but keeps the Timelords locked away? He could just smuggle the children out a couple of the time 😉

RE: Clara’s Cracker. It’s obviously the new use-once Sonic Cracker, snap to activate.

I do have a little theory brewing about Capaldi.

Moffatt has kindly given us a full set of regenerations now and wrapped up the Time War plot in a nice little bow (or maybe loop). It would be just typical of him not to show us the regeneration! We see Smith die and then, Capaldi pops up from around the corner and says to Clara “Trust me, I’m the Doctor”.

That would then give us a whole new mystery! We always get more new questions than answers after all. It also means that they don’t need to explain the whole regeneration limit in one episode, they can let the back story develop over time

Two things;

Firstly, I just wanted to echo the plea to move all of @denvaldron‘s posts to a blog.

It is obvious some people are interested in following this particular flavour of bonkers but I can see why, like me, @pedant is getting frustrated by it filling up the sofa. I love seeing all the fan creativity stuff but these posts in question read more like fan fiction which would definitely suit it’s own blog/thread.

Secondly, and on a more light-hearted sofa vibe, I re-watched The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith and Death of the Doctor last night with my youngest. Watching one after the other really helps you see the differences in how Tennant and Smith play their Doctors. Smith is so much “older” in his performance.

In the latter episode, there are some great lines about the amount of regenerations, what the old companions are up to and even Timelords get a mention. I won’t spoil it by revealing anything here but really recommend watching them. Both episodes are available on BBC iPlayer until this Saturday afternoon (30th Nov)

Regarding the “best friend”, I thought that was odd too. I thought Donna Noble was officially his “best friend”. I know he is very chummy with Clara but no more than most of his other companions.

Man’s best friend is a dog so does that make Clara K-9 😉

I think in another topic I mentioned that I think this episode will take place after Day of the Doctor and feature a few flashbacks to escaping the Doctor’s timestream at Trenzlaore.

How about this for a plot outline –

Clara will be living in her own place (not with the Maitland’s any more) but may be having Christmas dinner with them. Hopefully, her dad will make an appearance too and there will be lots of talk about what makes a family and absent-mothers.

The Doctor picks Clara up for a trip but soon discovers a distress beacon. With new found hope from tDotD he believes it is from Gallifrey and goes off to follow it. However, all of Gallifrey’s enemies also follow the beacon to prevent the timelords from escaping.

Shock-horror, the beacon is coming from a pre-battle Trenzalore (cue the flashbacks).

The Doctor and Clara get close and see the planet is surrounded by old enemies. They intercept a video message and see a woman.
Clara: “That’s my Mum!”
The Doctor: “That’s my daughter/mum/granddaughter/sister/1st cousin once removed!”

The woman:”Save the children of Trenzalore! When the clock strikes 12 we will all be dead”

The TARDIS lands again on Trenzalore and the window cracks again in the same place

We discover the Timelords of Gallifrey are behind the Silence organisation (hence why they have a TARDIS-style ship). In fact, a Silent (the actual monster) is what happens to a Timelord if they try and force their way out of the time-lock/bubble-universe!

I now have two possible theories for how the doctor dies

1: The Doctor sacrifices himself and gets killed by a Silent but the mystery woman and Clara take his body to Karn where they manage to revive him in the the Sacred Flame

2: The Doctor doesn’t want to fight, and this leads to a Silent killing the mystery woman. They are about to kill Clara but the Doctor joins the Silence in order to protect her. The Capaldi Doctor arrives as the Valeyard, now leader of the Silence, and kills the Smith Doctor in order to prevent the atrocities he would commit as part of the Silence.

Not sure if any of that is likely to happen but we have to start somewhere! I have another theory brewing about weeping angels causing a rip in time by sending Clara to the past but not quite formulated it fully

What caught my eye was the interesting is the pattern on Clara’s cardigan. Are those cool bow-ties or infinite loops?

@geoffers I think the necklace is just a fashion thing, it goes with the punky bracelet she has and we know she likes a necklace.

Could her tartan skirt be the inspiration for the Doctors new accent or is that part of the punk style too? Will Capaldi have a studded leather jacket and a green mohican 😛

RE: Time War
I must admit, I was a little disappointed by what the last day of the time war looked like, and not just because we didn’t see any Daleks outside of their casing!

I always interpreted it as a “non-violent” war, i.e. a timelord would alter time, then a Dalek would go back and alter time to counteract it, then a timelord would go back and change that time ad infinitum. Like they were all sitting above time (outside the pipes 😉 ) playing a game of chess with the universe.

All we should have seen on screen was time in constant flux. I think it would’ve looked great on screen to see Gallifrey burning, then peaceful, switching between the two like a light switch. The timelord warriors (I don’t really think an army is necessary) could be seen flying through the flickering existences in their TARDISes.

However, I’m willing to concede that what we so on screen was fairly minor in the whole Time War. Presuming the Timelords were operating in the safe haven of Gallifrey, it’s understandable they may have some foot soldiers guarding the defences. It wasn’t the last day of the war because it was the biggest battle but because the Daleks had broken in, they had won. That’s why the Doctor needed to use the Moment there and then.

My remaining question is. Is Gallifrey locked in time, frozen and burning, or just in a separate bubble universe, rebuilding itself? Or both? The former would leave the Doctor still feeling very guilty, and give him some sense of urgency to set Gallifrey free.

@scaryb, @Shazzbot, I was confused a bit about Osgood’s relationship with Kate.

They definitely behaved like mother/daughter in that telephone scene. That would explain why she is such a fangirl of the Doctor and expects so much of him (probably lots of her bedtime stories were filled with his adventures).

However, later on I thought how army/government types do say “mum” sometimes instead of “ma’am”.

If she is definitely her daughter, why not bill her as so? Nothing shows up on a quick google of “Osgood Lethbridge Stewart” (though plenty of Stewart Osgood!). That name reveals a wonderful amount of anagrams. I think my favourites are “A Bewildered Ghosts Grotto”, “Bittersweet Shard God Logo” and “Sweetheart Robot Digs Gold” 😛

The record-breaking article mentions how the special was shipped out and translated into 15 different languages and nothing was leaked (I think)! That’s some well done bit of logistics there

OK, Deep breath, here are my somewhat organised ramblings. I’ve tried to mention the people who sparked of my thoughts. Sorry if I missed anyone.

Numbering: @hudsey, thanks for the info direct from Moffatt regarding the numbers. I was already getting confused before this episode!
I think the reason for this was to give the story somewhere new to go. Similar to the “Search for Gallifrey” plot. We don’t know how long it will take but it will definitely be another turning point to look forward to.
So, I agree with @denvaldron that I will just be saying the actors name (e.g. Tennant Doctor) from no on.

Gallifrey (@juniperfish, @bluesqueakpip): The whole planet is in the Bubble universe so it is still burning, also time can flow more slowly in a bubble/pocket universe as seen in other episodes (Hide/The Doctor’s Wife). I don’t think time was re-written. I believe that is how it always happened but the Timelords & Doctor think otherwise. It also explains why so many Daleks kept re-appearing after they were supposedly all destroyed! It also justifies the new-paradigm Daleks to seek some pretty major revenge on the Doctor (somehow it’s OK to wipe out the Daleks now, as long as you save the children!).
Also, as seen in Hide, Psychic blood-lines can call out across the universes. This could imply some of the Doctor’s Gallifreyan family popping up in the future.

Tom Baker: People have taken The Curator character as something too serious. It was just a nice bit of fan service. It never needs to be explained. Even if it does there are so many ways to spin it. Just because he looked like an older version of the Tom Baker Doctor we all know appearances can be deceiving. Could’ve been a Ganger/Zygon/Ghost/Auton/Echo/Psychic Projection/Parallel/hologram/Master/Timelord/insert_other_shape_shifter_being_here

Zygons: I also think the Zygons have been taken a bit too seriously as well (@DenValdron). I did, at first, think the Zygon sub-plot was a bit generic but I can now see the bigger part it had to play in the story (partly thanks to @pedant). It also gave the more casual viewer or newcomer something familiar to hook into.

From my understanding, Zygons are refugees from the future, their planet being destroyed during the time war. We don’t know how long they have been there for. One of their plans for survival, on discovery of the painting, is to send a branch of Zygons off to the future inside it. They can then steal a time-travel device and rescue all of their species and build a new home. The painting will be guarded by their version of QEI. The whole reason it wasn’t destroyed is because the Doctor’s went in too, hence why it was so well preserved by the real QEI

Remember when the first episode of AG came back and we got the naff Autons! They were so lame but it reminded us that it is the Doctor/companion that is the focus and the monsters are the fun bit. When the Zygon morphed back into Kate it was truly a horrific image and made my youngest grip tight nto my hand.

Sonic (@JimTheFish): The software is probably stored in the Cloud (i.e. the TARDIS), he just downloads the software into whatever sonic he has. We have even see him (Tennant) get a new one from the TARDIS itself so I imagine there is a strong link.

Osgood (@CathAnnabel, @tennantmarsters2013): OK, this is a tricky one. It is clearly an odd name and is too similar to Oswin & Oswald to be just a coincidence. However, Oswin was a nick-name and Oswald is a surname. I got the impression Osgood was her first name but if it was a surname then there may be a distant link. For example, historically, when old family tribes spilt off they would often keep part of their name and add a new bit.
The strange bit of that character is that she knew she wasn’t a Zygon (as she had the inhaler) and she shared this info with her counterpart. This has the potential to lead somewhere if we ever go back, or see the after effects, of the negotiation.

Clara (@ardaraith): She is still as equally mysterious and normal as ever! We are obviously made to think that time has moved on since Trenzalore. The finger clicking really stood out as a River link, and good call on the “eyes” line too. I also agree with @jimthefish (or is that jimthefiveish now? :P) that she lingered over the Susan photo.

Timestream: Whether they are still in the timestream or not is unknown. I’d like to think not as it would make this whole episode even more complicated! In fact, didn’t the Doctor say, in NotD, that the whole thing was about to collapse? I’m presuming the Christmas special will deal with this, although probably not as much as we’d like. Is there a place to bonkers-theorise about this yet?

I watched the first 2 parts with my youngest. He lost interest after the first episode but then got a bit more drawn into when he thought the cavemen were going to kill someone!

I loved how alien the Doctor and Susan were. The junkyard looked great and it was amazing to see how detailed the recent re-creations of that and the TARDIS console are.

The quality looked really good compared to earlier shaky clips I had seen of it. I’m really glad they re-aired it. Luckily I recorded it so I can catch up on the 2 remaining episodes later.

Also, nice to see this referenced at the very start of the Day of the Doctor. Clara is a history teacher by the looks of it and Ian is now on the board of governors. I have a feeling we might be seeing more of that school.

That was a brilliant night of unabashed geekiness!

Me and 2 of my boys went out to the cinema all dressed up. The cinema was jam-packed. Not too many people dressed up but lots of scarves and fezes! I thought it would be full of kids and old crusties but  the majority of the audience seemed to be teenage girls!

The cinema atmosphere was electric. The manager came in to have a chat with us all and gave a signed picture of Matt Smith away to one lucky person (whoever sat in seat K9!). We were told we would get a few adverts, then they’d press play to coincide with the BBC 1 showing. It felt really special to be part of such a global event.

We got a few special scenes before hand. First, a public service announcement from Strax, warning what would happen if we didn’t turn off our phones, and the joy of eating popcorn (you can hear their screams!). Second we got Matt telling us to put on our glasses and how to detect Zygons in the audience, followed by a bit of banter between him and Tennant. That was a really nice treat for those that made it to the cinema.

Then the feature presentation! There was so much to say about it, I can’t really put the words together coherently. I tend to agree with the Den Of Geeks review (thanks for the link @pedant). I loved the way it managed to mix a regular style episode with the wider events of the time war. It was all about the Doctor really and it was a touch of genius to make the much hyped War Doctor into the same Doctor we all know and love.

We didn’t get any answers about how Clara escaped from the Doctor’s time-stream. It seemed all but brushed under the carpet, a distant and faint memory for Clara. Then I caught the trailer for the Xmas special (not shown at the cinema but watched on my phone in the McDonald’s afterwards!). So it looks like we are going to jump back in time to the real battle of Trenzalore and get a few answers leading to the fall of the 11th!

But is he the 11th? This episode seem to quite clearly state that Capaldi is the 13th Doctor .I’m happy for it to be that way but some of the Moffat interviews I’ve seen imply it’s all a bit fuzzy still? I presume the next series will be “The Search for Gallifrey” with Capaldi & Clara going off in search of the bubble universe where it has been hidden. Did we saw a new companion at the very beginning? Clara’s fellow teacher looked like he could become a companion, nicely paralleling the original series using two teachers.

It was a lovely seen at the end with all 13 Doctor’s. My youngest really didn’t understand how it was possible and he had a pure look of awe on his face! He also said it was lucky the actress playing Queen Elizabeth had a twin sister! Bless him, I didn’t spoil the illusion 🙂

I’ve rabbled on too much now and it’s getting late but I might as well watch the F(ive)ish Doctors while I finish off this glass of wine 😉

My last bit of catch up before the big day!

Watched this one with my 2 sons in the dark, even my eldest boy came in to watch (albeit with headphones on!).

This is another episode that is just so fun to re-watch, without any pressure of expectation.

Clara does some more echoing with “I don’t know were I am?” as she falls through the time stream. This is what all the people trapped in the wifi during tBoSJ say. I wonder if she escapes she will have upgraded intelligence/powers or if she’ll need a Donna-style mind-wipe or Rose style exorcism!

We still don’t actually find out how River knows the Doctor’s name, or when he would say it but I got the feeling it wasn’t from their wedding but something else.

I definitely got Daddy vibes from the Doctor (being hopeless and naive with children) and River was looking very motherly towards Clara at the end. She reminded me of a mum holding back the tears as her child moves away to bigger and better things. I’m starting to warm to the idea of Clara being the Doctor’s daughter or at least a creation of the Doctor and River.

Brainwave alert!!!
What if Clara is a progeny of River, similar to Jenny, the Doctor’s Daughter! That fits with the whole “recipe” thing. Pushing it a little further (possibly too much) Jenny regenerates into a man and has a baby with Clara who is called Susan 😛

In regards to that awkward soufflé line, I heard it as (like in Batman Begins), it’s not who you are but what you do that defines you.

Just re-watched this one on my lunch break and it still manages to be scary in broad daylight in the staff canteen!

I think this is one of my favourite episodes in this whole series. The story has some great twists and it would have been just as good a story if the Doctor wasn’t in it as much.

I also like how it emphasizes the human-ness of Clara and the alien-ness of the Doctor during the bit where he takes the photos from the entire history of Earth.

The bit where Clara is “flying” the TARDIS still doesn’t make much sense but I think I can justify it as an “emergency protocol”.

A line of note is “Paradoxes tidy themselves up … most of the time” which is a handy get-out clause!

Not sure if there are many clues in this episode, apart from maybe blood calling out to blood across time and the echo/pocket universe.

Just re-watched this and it is even more emotional after seeing TNotD.
This Claricle plays it firmly as a too-good-to-be-true companion. It’s a delight to see Eleven getting on so well with her and this makes it seem even more cruel how he treats Clara-Prime afterwards.

One thing that jumped out on the re-watch was the “memory worm”. Perhaps the Doctor got a few bites when he was obtaining it, which has led to his faltering memory. For an even darker thought, perhaps he was self-harming to try and wipe out the pain of loosing the Ponds! More than likely just part of Madame Vastra’s collection.

@blenkinsopthebrave I also thought that Clara-Prime’s friend in the graveyard (at the end of this episode) looked very familiar to the Maitland girl but also too young. It could possibly still be the Maitlands Aunt and that is how Clara new them.

The bit about being born behind Big Ben still jumps out as a timey-wimey reference even though it was just probably written to sound fantastical and Christmassy. A possible reference to the Claricle’s being borne from the Doctor’s time stream.

Glad I got to re-watch it before this Saturday! I just want to squeeze in tBoSJ and tNotD with my sons to lead up to the anniversary episode. After seeing the trailer I’m still wondering how much Clara will feature in this. I have a slight feeling she will get left in present-day London while the Doctor is stolen away from her. I can’t imagine them focusing too much on the Impossible Girl while there is a Time War to deal with

I’ve decided I’m going to not watch any more clips/teasers from TDoTD. I’ve whetted my appetite with a few treats but don’t want to spoil my appetite for this Saturday. I missed all the weekend stuff (CiN) but I’m resisting the links on here.

I was away for a weekend break in the city of Bath for my 13th wedding anniversary. My wife banned me from talking Doctor Who, even though she couldn’t help bringing the subject up a couple of times!

I’d really recommend it as a place to visit, it would make a great setting for a Doctor Who episode (if it hasn’t already).

One thing I had to share was some photos of the Thermae Spa “aroma steam rooms” (not my own, these are from their site!). Remind you of anywhere?

Welcome @dickiegarvey! A Sonic cane would be rather nifty @Shazzbot although maybe slightly impractical when running down corridors!

One thing that has struck me about the artwork people have made of Capaldi’s costume, is that they are all quite old fashioned, similar to Matt Smith’s Victorian outfits (see Fan Creativity thread). I think people have assumed that because he is an older actor, he will be wearing a respectable/traditional costume.

How about him wearing something more contemporary or even futuristic? I’m not talking a tin-foil jumpsuit or anything like that but something more inspired than a suit and tie. Perhaps a bullet-proof vest wouldn’t go amiss 😉

Just rewatched this. Didn’t spot anything major in retrospect.

Interesting how the Doctor calls Clara “The salvage of a lifetime”. Turned out quite literally for him!

 

One thing I picked up on was how much Clara & the Doctor acted like they are brother & sister. They make a great double act so its going to be really interesting to see how Clara develops after the anniversary

Similar to @jamesunderscore I was feeling that it would be great to expand our profiles so we can all have a little more insight to the people behind the avatars.

Anyone watching the new series of Ripper Street on bbc1?

I love the show and the new series is even better than the first. Its not sci-fi but I have a friend who describes it as “what a Victorian Torchwood spin off could have been”, minus the aliens!

The latest episode had a character, a doctor in am asylum, that really reminded me of the BG master

Neil Gaiman has written the final story for a series of e-books based on each of the Doctors. His is about 11 & pre-marriage Amy. He says he doesn’t have the time to write a full episode for Capaldi yet but would like to see his new monsters on the screen

Once I’d finished telling my story, in which I create an incredibly creepy Dr Who villain or possibly bunch of villains called The Kin, there was definitely part of me who went ‘You know, wouldn’t it be fun to put this on screen?’ Wouldn’t this be fun to see if I can actually make people wee themselves with terror in real life?
