    You are very welcome.

Has anyone noticed that both Face the Raven and Heaven sent begins with the scene with the very, very bright light? If someone has mentioned that already sorry for repeating. I haven’t read all posts yet.

The more I watch the scene with Clara’s death the less I like it. Not how Clara acted, because that was very heroic. I don’t like that shadowy thing. What is the cause of Clara’s death? Is it like Avada Kedavra which leaves no physical damage or maybe her soul was taken by the dark smoke like dementor or she was just poisoned by the cloud of smog? I’m joking a bit but for me it was too much magic to little physics. Plus Diagon Alley. Maybe that’s the point. The Magician’s trick is not over yet 🙂

It is, but don’t take it so literally. When Danny meets the Doctor he sees how big influence he has on Clara. Clara is doing some extraordinary thing on Doctor’s command. That’s the spell. And we have this question If he is a good man? What if he has the evil side (eventually he has). Remember that travelling with the Doctor can ruin your life. Clara’s life was deffinitely ruined. But leave the Doctor. He doesn’t fit very well, because as the protagonist he’s supposed to be good. Missy is a better choice here. She is evil and she has some kind of power on Clara’s life because it is she who starts the course of the events which lead Danny and Clara to their deaths (choosing her, giving her the Doctor’s number, killing Danny? or just intercepting his soul, luring Clara into the Nethersphere, telling her how to be the Doctor). I know it doesn’t fit in Swan Lake scheme satisfactorily but that whole commemoration on DW site made me think that Clara will get some reward and the only reward I can imagine is Danny. (What exactly had happend to his soul after their last meeting? Had it just vanished?).

I have my small but rather powerfully bonkers theory on Clara’s death. It’s based on Swan Lake. Clara is Odette, Danny Pink prince Siegfried and Doctor or even better Missy, who made the whole Clara’s plot the dark wizard Von Rothbart. Odette remains under the spell of Von Rothbart but she meet the prince and falls in love in him. They both of course dies. Siegfried as the first, then Odette who decides to comitting suicide. But after their death they ascend into the Heavens together, forever united in love. And Von Rothbart lost his powers. So I think Clara will somehow get Danny as her reward. Now you can laugh 🙂

Thank you for sharing that. I don’t understand it either. I don’t agree with every change he introduced especially from series 6 but he is the author of the most brilliant episodes in Who modern era and for me series 5 beats every RTD series (I love RTD episodes but none of his series had so incredible arcs [maybe except Bad Wolf] and internal coherence as series 5).

I really like your view on Clara but I think I focused on a different aspect. She, who had childhood like from a fairytale (it has been always very suspicious for me) with loving parents and such a terrible loss was a very cheerful, full of life and a little bit happy-go-lucky character. Maybe after her mum died she started to deny how sad and unfair this world could be or maybe she didn’t want to focus on this aspect of life (or as I’ve said she was just undeveloped). But the time with the Doctor made her face the truth that the world could be really evil. And she started to look like a person who really felt that.

The previous companions gained something good, something positive from travelling with the Doctor. I think Clara lost everything. Her lover (maybe the love of her life) her happiness, the joy of life and the stability (her previous positive vision of life) (you can say that she was full of life and happiness when she was dangling above London, but I think it was like @lisa has said her addiction and her way to forget about the reality. She probably wanted to be too busy to think about her life. She was running from her past just like the Doctor. The last think that was left to her was the Doctor and her unshaken faith in him. But Doctor couldn’t help her and that faith eventually brought her death. For a moment I even thought that it was the Doctor who ruined her life but it was Missy. I don’t know how he could stick with her. Poor Clara.

Hello Puro and Son. How nice to see you back. Ever since I’ve read your post (that post) I’ve kept you in my thoughts.

My nick is derived from the name of Mersey river which flows through Liverpool. I’m a football fan and support Liverpool Football Club. I don’t play football (because I’m a 27 years old old lady 🙂 ) but I run a blog about LFC history but as it’s in polish there’s no point in advertising it here.

Depression is one of the most horrible thing in the world. I’m sure I don’t have to told you that but my dad has suffered from it for a few months and this year has been really, really miserable for us.

Puro wrote to me and told me about her illness and she was so kind that I told her about my situation. I didn’t have the strenght to speak about that with my friends but after my conversation with her I felt much more better.

I hope she will recover and feel better.

I really see Capaldi as meant to be more unpredictable and to keep us in question if he is a good man.  He is not meant to be charismatic, but layered, tired and hard to reach.

That’s the problem with the Doctor! After all these years in this world (I lost count how old is he) you can expect that he knows who he is. I definitely knew who he was (at least who he was for me) but now I’m confused. Matt Smith established himself as the Doctor in the first seconds of the show. Probably it’s the new regenerative cycle. Everything is somehow new for him and he is the first one who fully feel the burden of his past. But now we’re heading towards the end of the second season and I still feel like the Doctor regenerated only few episodes ago. But I’m not complaining because he’s had really great moments (as caretaker and V symphony scene). Thank you for that post. It’s really great.

    @nerys

I worry we are looking toward a time when the Doctor travels without a companion.

It can be interesting but I hope for a bunch of companions. His relationship with Clara was very intimate and made him vulnerable.

One could also argue that traveling with the Doctor for such a long time, longer than any of the other companions, damaged Clara irrevocably.

I feel really sorry for Clara, bacause she started as a very solid and stable person and died as a rather broken one (without a sense of stability).

I love your reference to the Chretien de Troyes’s Parcival. I read that Parcival couldn’t ask the question because he wasn’t ready at that moment to do that. He didn’t do the penance for his mother’s grief and death. Some authors say that Chretien changed his mind and decided that Gawain would be the one who finds the Grall.

Your post sums up some of my reflections on Capaldi’s Doctor. I have rather ambiguous feelings towards him. I love him because he is the Doctor but he treats people not like the greatest mystery worth solving as it was for 11 but like otters. He should know by now that humans can be honest, heroic and goodhearted and give them credit for that.

If Ashild sent the Doctor to the Time Lords or had some kind of agreement with them the only mediator in this case could be Missy. So Ashildr had to meet her in the past as some people suggested after Tha Woman Who Lived and Missy has to be in contact with TL or she was sent by them to acomplish this mission.

I have a few afterthoughts. I rewached lately some Amy and Rory episodes. And as I really like them very much I think Clara was much more involved in Doctor’s matters than any other modern companion. She was not only his conscience but also his right hand. No other companion influenced him so much as Clara. She died in vain but she accepted her fate bravely. And at first I was angry and disappointed because I wanted for her a better departure (with better I mean a really good reason, a sacrifice to save someone). But now I understand that it had to be something like that. I didn’t think much about Amy’s departure. It was the only think she should do. But she had that choice and the reason to do that. Clara had not. It was a punishment without a crime. Or her only crime was that she wanted to save someone’s life or acted as a Doctor but as a human she couldn’t. Sad that it was the first time when she was unsuccessful and it was her death day.

I’ve just watched and I don’t know what to think about that. Clara’s death seemed so pointless. She died because of some stupid agreement and a rash decision and didn’t even save anyone. After all she had done and how she had done that. I don’t know whose fate is more tragic, Oswin or Clara. Oswin’s fate was surely more acceptable. And Doctor just stood there and watched. But he was great. I think it’s not over yet. Going to rewatch.

So there was no big mystery of Clara’s capabilities.

I was Clara hater but I never wished her to die. Why I hated her? Partly because of these ‘experiments’ which @purofilion mentioned. I didn’t understand what kind of character she was. Who exactly she was. She didn’t act as a regular ‘useless’ 😉 human companion (I know that Doctor had really brilliant companions with great skills). She did things which no modern companion had ever done (some people say that we will get some explanation of her abilities but I doubt it). Because of that it was really hard for me to identify with her. And I was angy about that. But this season Clara has grown on me and now I have hope against all hope that she will somehow survive and all these trailers and interviews are only a smokescreen like ‘Clara Oswald never existed’.

I remember how I wrote somewhere about Paul McGann that he was the worst Doctor ever, after I watched the Doctor Who movie. But it was a very unfair opinion expressed on the spur of the moment. McGann did a magnificent job as 8 with Big Finish and I love his adventures with Lucie Miller. I think he was the most sensitive of all Doctors and it’s the irony of fate that he was the one who decided to regenerate into the War Doctor. And there’s no such a thing as the worst Doctor ever. Maybe there’s the least favourite but these things change all the time. Like my opinion on 10 who was my favourite and now I can hardly stand him 🙂

I meant more about their adventures less about their (ill) feelings (Caretaker is my favourite Capaldi’s episode). But it’s only my opinion. My personal view. Nothing more.

But I disagree with the opinion that 11 was darker than 10. For me he was the most cheerful Doctor in the modern era and the fifth series remains my favourite.

I understand that some people feel that Doctor Who changed its direction after RTD left. Its a natural process that series issues become more serious and complex with time. But I won’t be upset if the new series is a little bit less psychological and more adventurous.

I don’t like Dr Who. I like about 3 or 4 episodes every two years. The rest of the time it’s not my thing.

🙂 For me Doctor Who is like a husband, the love of my life through thick and thin. But for some people it can be like a lover. After the first infatuation everything backs to the reality.

I was relistening the epiosde and I noticed how often the characters used the word “god”or “gods”, e.g.”For God’s sake”, “Oh God”, “May the Gods”. I counted them and they used them 18 times. The crew, Rasmussen, Clara, even 474. Everyone except the Doctor. I’m not suggesting that Doctor is an atheist :-). He has used such phrases as „My God!” 3 times in this season (Missy used them twice) (And the fact that someone uses such words doesn’t mean that he or she is or isn’t a believer). But it’s interesting and maybe somehow significant.

11 and 12 knew that Gallifrey was saved theoretically and 12 saved it practically and that’s why 14 and 15 didn’t turn up. They had no reason. Or 12 turned up to follow Gallifrey after it was saved by his predecessors. It was its last known location in time and space.

Would 11 be able to summon a future Doctor to help anyway?

But 12 was there 11 times before or those times he could remember (9?, 10?, 11). 11 didn’t have to summon 12, because he was 12 in the future. 11 had to survive, regenerate and back in time to help as 12. It’s something like River Song who existed even her father had died (had never been born) before she was born.

Doctor is the one who let them go free. And that’s what he usually does. Saves the day and sets villainous aliens free (gives them a chance). I think that proves his superiority over terrorized and unforgiving humans (maybe that’s why he said Harriet Jones’s line; to bring her back and show that he’s different). But it was too much for me when he hesitated and let Missy escaped after all that pain she caused last season, this season and every future season.

“I am beginning to think that Clara’s fate is to be forgotten by the Doctor. Call it the Inverse Donna.”

Why do you think so? I’d read your comment before I watched the episode and I looked for some clues which can prove this idea but I did’t find anything specific. Clara plays both crucial and a little bit marginalized role in the episode. They were the usual hints that she may die but nothing that she’ll be forgotten. Nothing I could spot. Maybe there is something when Doctor asks her to leave him with Osgood alone. I thought that both she and he showed that they didn’t have that understanding they had had before.

I enjoyed the episode though I had moments that I coudn’t distinguish whether we talk about fiction or reality. I was somewhat disappointed with the final solution. It was again like words win wars but I suppose it had to be like that to fullfill the message.

    But I love Doctor’s speech:

“Of course I understand. Haven’t you called this a war, this funny little thing. This is not a war. I fought in a bigger war than you will ever know. I did worse things that you can ever imagine. When I close my eyes… I hear more screams than anyone could ever be able to count! And do you know what you do with all that pain? Shall I tell you where you put it? You hold it tight… till it burns your hand, and you say this… No-one else will ever have to live like this! No-one else will have to feel this pain! Not on my watch!”

There were very appropriate words yesterday. I couldn’t sleep last night and I actually watched the movie about this war “Wojtek, the Bear that went to War”. I cried my eyes out. Really worth seeing.

And I’ve always thought that Oswin could hack Daleks’network only because she was a Dalek. But at the same time Daleks chose her to make her one of them because she was very intelligent. Less intelligent people got only those visors in their foreheads.

It’s only a digression. Do you remember Rita from God Complex? She was a nurse and a devoted Muslim and she believed that the hotel was Jannaham, the Muslim hell. There’s this scene when she’s saying that to the Doctor and he answers her ‘Oh, you are a Muslim'(or something like that) with a smile on his face. She was a very nice character. Good-natured, intelligent, very brave and maybe the most important, very likable. If I were in a hospital I would like her to be my nurse.

“One slip, one word in the wrong sentence, and the family next door would be gone the next morning and all the neighbours would act as if nothing had happened”.

So you think I’m a cowardly inferior from eastern Europe. I’m not sure whether my czech and slovak neighbours would be glad if they knew that they’re cowards and the best thing to do is to run away from them. Still Czechs survived as one nation over 1000 years sharing borders with such countries as Germany and Poland.

Funny you should mention Sontaran Stratagem. There’s a scene with Martha in which she’s examining a polish worker who is acting as a robot. So that’s how you see foreigners from central Europe. As cowards or machines who are too thick to learn your language. Rather disappointing as GB is home for many young and intelligent people from this part of Europe.

I know that Britons are very proud of how they stood up to Hitler. My country didn’t get that chance. Our commanders thought that we have to withstand only a few days. After that our western allies were supposed to come and help us. And that’s how these political treatises work. They don’t. But we can be very proud of our soldiers who fought at many fronts. Especially No. 303 Fighter Squadron who fought in the Battle of Britain. As the reward we got 44 years with the communists and the bill from Winston Churchill for fuel and the planes our pilots had used in the battle. But as a nation we value freedom the most. And we never sit quietly when we see unjustice (maybe that’s why we have such troubled history). And I can assure you that I’m fully aware of what’s actually happening in my country, at my neighbours, in Europe and in the world.

@jimthefish I agree. Steven Moffat is brilliant but he’s not a seer. It was bad luck. I watched this episode on All Saints’ Day. In my country the tradition is to light candles and visit the graves of deceased relatives. So I was in a very pensive mood yesterday. And maybe that’s why I didn’t feel it was really entertaining. Last year, after Dark water I said that Steven Moffat menaged to offend both atheists and believers. He definitely maintains his standards 🙂

@arbutus I think MASH is a brilliant example of an antiwar comedy. But the action of this comedy takes place far away from our homes. MH17 flew over my country and crashed on the territory of my neighbour. @IAmNotAFishIAmAFreeMan This case is not yet closed as 9/11. And what is really painful everyone knows who is responsible for that but probably no one will be punished. @mudlark @bluesqueakpip I don’t mind politics in Doctor Who especially if it’s so important to you. I’m just not sure if it’s the right time to make allusions to MH17 incident.

But I can understand that ukrainian conflict is not as important to you as it’s to me.

The truth is that Doctor Who belongs to everyone and no one, even Steven Moffat. You can take it and do with it whatever you want and he can do nothing with that.

I was fine with the episode until 44:20. Yesterday russian plane crashed. 224 died. Officials denies that it was a shooting but the plane just broke into pieces in the air. Google it as the Doctor says. Last year another plane known as MH17 was shooted down by the rebels from Donbas with Buk missile system. 283 passenger had no chance to survive. That was not just a scene in which plane was stopped in the air. That had actually happened. And watching when someone tries to shoot down the plane is not entertaining for me.

Why Steven Moffat has to make everyone miserable? I liked that Osgood was so optimistic and enthusiastic and a little bit naive.
