This was written by Murray Gold specifically foe Voyage of the Damned
23 November 2015 at 12:01 #4760922 November 2015 at 17:34 #47530Welcome aboard!
she went out not with a bang, but with a whimper
I’m pretty sure the jury is still out on that one.
Waterloo is not especially complex – big, but fairly straightforward. However, the first station was only built in 1848, a full 33 years after the battle. South London railways builders generally were renowned for simply ploughing through working class areas, but that is not unique to Waterloo.
To “meet under the clock at Waterloo station” is however a well known London thing.
And, of course, it was the sight of a very famous sunset.
22 November 2015 at 16:44 #47520Totally agree with @juniperfish and @nerys. Ashildr has arrogance-squared (that of teenagers who think they have all the answers AND of the immortal). That is a fascinating character with an inbuilt balloon for a Doctor to prick, or let down gently.
I made the error of going over the kasterbouros.com, where the three or four posters they have left seem to have built the definitive Maise-Williams-Is-Crap groupthink machine.
On a different note was I pondering how Moffat likes to make sure there is a fair bit of Christmas in his Christmas episodes. Can’t help suspecting he will get a present of some sort this year. I doubt it will be an alive-after-all-Clara, but there are those who care about the doctor enough that they might move mountains to bring him comfort.
22 November 2015 at 13:00 #47506What @avaris said, almost exactly.
22 November 2015 at 12:31 #47502Chill dude – had you read on you would have found you got caught in something not really to do with the forum (which reiterates that we know only a limited amount about our little global family).
And on the topic about which you deployed the royal ‘we’, ask yourself if you would have felt the same had Sally Sparrow – arguably the greatest companion who never was – come back and had someone taken a bullet for her. It is quite possible to care greatly about a character we have only seen briefly.
(and seemingly been banned)
Nobody has been banned. Sometimes people realise of their own accord that they are in no emotional state to participate properly in the forum (the reasons are still there for anyone to read).
22 November 2015 at 01:10 #47467@purofilion – a tad harsh perhaps, but yes @geronimo be careful of the Royal ‘We’. Rigsy was well liked when he first appeared, and is still presented as a thoroughly decent bloke, now with added all-too-human responsibilities.
So anyway, not to belabour it, but we had a great big lampshade put over retcons and misdirection after a story that some doubt even happened (so to speak) and in a season in which many here have noted the recurring motif of storytelling.
It would not especially surprise me to find that the Doctor will discover that Clara has been dead for a while and that what happened here was simply him being brought up to speed.
And I still suspect he knows more than he is letting on. Let’s face it, he has form.
Oh, and we all know that death isn’t necessarily the end of anyone’s story.
21 November 2015 at 22:07 #47450When the Doc looked at the flash cards I got the feeling he wasn’t looking for what to say to Rigsy.
Retcon, misdirection circuit – meta much? And probably not accidental.
Retcon: retroactive (or retrospective) continuity: where the facts remain the same, but your understanding of them changes (sometimes to handwave away inconsistencies, but sometimes because someone had a Way Cool Idea that required some tinkering). The possibility of gender shifting Time Lords, f’rinstance. Not quite correctly used in the episode, quite possibly deliberately so.
They’re pulling a House Season 4, I reckon.
Oh, and someone needs to explain privity of contract to Ashildr 🙂
21 November 2015 at 20:58 #47433*gulp*
21 November 2015 at 00:35 #47372I’m fairly sure that everyone involved in the season has been merrily chucking out foilers.
19 November 2015 at 01:39 #47263@purofilion
Are there that many Moff haters
No, it just feels like it.
19 November 2015 at 01:37 #47262It’s not something that would especially bother me, but our Multi-Layer Spoiler Protection System(tm) is designed for the most twitchy :).
18 November 2015 at 23:45 #47256I suspect that should probably be in the spoilers section (given that the url is itself a bit spoilery).
17 November 2015 at 01:56 #47156I said something along the lines of how we need to remember talking is the only way to end this, and it has 27 likes.
28. In fact 29 now.
16 November 2015 at 13:24 #47103Save a rather self-indulgent intro, you might find this on why young men joined ISISÂ Â interesting.
TL;DR – the Doctor nailed it.
16 November 2015 at 11:48 #47093Incidentally, the POV device is reminiscent of a Bob Shaw novel called Other Days, Other Eyes. A company invents a type of glass that (unintentionally) delays the transit of light, so what you see is a few seconds after it happened. This causes car accidents etc. It is then found that the rate of  delay is adjustable, from moments to weeks.
The the Black Hats realise they can pulverise the glass to powder and spread it in crop dusters  to create an all pervasive surveillance system.
16 November 2015 at 01:20 #47032A rather lovely blog by Robin Ince about taking his 7yo to Doctor Who Festival.
15 November 2015 at 20:31 #47018Surprised this hasn’t gone up yet
15 November 2015 at 20:26 #47015I think Robots of Sherwood is a much misunderstood ep (admittedly not helped the That Edit), and like Sleep No More ably illustrates the strengths and weaknesses of Gatiss. A very strong and distinctive flavour, delivering a nice sense of distorted point-of-view, but in the end the last morsels sometimes just don’t quite satisfy.
On the Victory of the Daleks-Cold War spectrum, this was a slightly towards the Danny Boy, and less the Captain Zhukov. Which is a pity.
Still, it was bold stylistically (with strong female characters, in authority, being just a fact and not worthy of comment AND breaking ground for the transgendered (not sure that’s a word?)) and it deserves many a brownie point for that.
15 November 2015 at 18:01 #47006@whisht @purofilion
Bugger. My secret is out.
14 November 2015 at 23:17 #46942One of 138 movie shot by that studio in that year, and not especially expected to be remembered. Wonder what happened to the other 137…
14 November 2015 at 22:16 #46935They are really out to get her, aren’t they?
14 November 2015 at 21:53 #46932So. Anyway.
As far as I can tell (and do feel free to correct me, since I had a overly needy cat wandering all over me) Clara is still being converted (or whatever you want to call the Build-A-Sandman routine).
13 November 2015 at 17:21 #46882@purofilion @lisa
Any who cites Grace Slick as a major influence gets my vote.
12 November 2015 at 18:41 #46844@purofilion @janetteb
Florence.
The song suggested by jp
And this is getting huge airplay here. ‘triffic song:
And I like this a lot
12 November 2015 at 01:23 #46817I wonder if they are going for a House, Season 4 scenario (the last 4 eps told a very particular story, then in the finale something happened which completely changed – indeed confounded – you interpretation of everything you had seen to then). Would be very clever if they could pull that off.
12 November 2015 at 01:19 #46816Post two up – mis-spelling >>> no notification!
12 November 2015 at 00:05 #46812@goeffers
the doctor asks bonnie who will make the violins, and etc (i.e. how will the zygons go forward in the world, once they’ve won)? if a zygon copies a pilot, surely it copies the ability to fly a plane? logically, if a zygon copies a violin maker/player
True, but that wasn’t the point he was making. Zygella had not given the issue a moment’s thought. Like many a teenage extremist she had not noticed that she was living for the struggle – for ‘war’ – and had no idea what life after victory looked like.
11 November 2015 at 23:17 #46806Oh, I like that!
11 November 2015 at 19:28 #46798The car is later than 1910s and the uniform of the dude with the peaked hat is RAF-ish, so more like 1940s I reckon. Actually, I hadn’t noticed the bunting among the trees so maybe VE Day set?
11 November 2015 at 15:30 #46791@purofilion
(because it wasn’t -this wasn’t about apartheid, for example, as these were great big aliens with suckers)
Am guessing you haven’t seen District 9… 😉
@starla @jphamlore @supernumerary
There is real world precedent for ‘peace without punishment’, from South Africa to Northern Ireland. Not evertything has to be Nuremberg, especially teenage tantrums.
And there is an established TV trope that, inside MI5 or CIA HQ there is a wall of the lost: they are remembered, just not publicly.
And I still have a sneaking suspicion that the town of T&C was part of a Treaty manadated-scenario, rather than happenstance, designed to draw out and address teenage tantrums. Feed them a nice easy slogan; given them a place name (and a fictional istan too!)…. The Doctor did describe it as a scenario. Interesting word, that.
11 November 2015 at 02:31 #46769My bet, if not a bona fide Clara/icle, would be a stalky-forehead type Dalek. It would have a certain circularity with how we first met her.
11 November 2015 at 00:53 #46763@purofilion
Children in Need = this week, Fri 13 Nov
Comic Relief = March (but I think there was one this year and it is every two years, iirc)
It being a school night the purveyor of the pix is presumably in bed. I will chastise him tomoz and get ’em put up.
Am inclined to agree with @jimthefish re the idea of Cap’n Jack return – unless it was something v cool about immortality (and he was a Moff creation). BUT that’s a lot of spec about pix I can’t show you yet.
11 November 2015 at 00:37 #46759@jimthefish @purofilion
Actually, DW usually does Comic Relief in March. Is that next year? That would make far more sensible timing. Even a 10 min slot needs a lot of post-production.
11 November 2015 at 00:33 #46757@purofilion
Yep Children in Need, but it is this Friday so filming on Sunday before is leaving it terribly tight.
10 November 2015 at 21:40 #46740Maybe it was a captain 😉 Actually, being the RAF it would be Group Captain Jack….
(This is total speculation, obv – no evidence but a couple of phone pix which are yet to turn up *taps watch again*)
10 November 2015 at 20:40 #46737Right. So.
Kettering, Northants. Last Sunday.
Reported to a poster here who has the sense of urgency of a teenage guitarist and, more to the point, the photos (taps watch):
“Filming Dr Who with Coleman, the Tardis and lots of Downton looking people”
Further interrogation finds witnesses aren’t fans, but also not bullshitters, which raise the possibility it could have been Coleman’s body double (I assume she has one).
Pics show Tardis, bloke in RAF-style great coat, others in period dress, and that vintage Citroen that is in every sodding thing (the owner must be minted by now). Very WWII feel (stand-in for Bletchley?)
Possibilities:
– Second unit for Xmas, but this is v late in the day (per @jimthefish above);
– A reshoot for Xmas
– Something for CiN, although again seems a bit late
– or…..?????
Maybe an insert scene for S10 done while Coleman is available?
OMG! RAF-style greatcoat…..
10 November 2015 at 19:07 #46731Apparently the space station is called Le Verrier (on the trailer embed on the BBC site).
Le Verrier was a mathematician who, using maths alone, correctly predicted the position of Neptune, when looking to explain discrepancies in the orbit of Uranus.
Correctly predicted the position of….
10 November 2015 at 17:09 #46726I suspect that the idea of Truth or Consequences is built into the treaty as a failsafe, and that at the first sign of insurrection Osgood(s) set the scenario in motion by seeding the idea and location – in order to keep an element of control over events.
10 November 2015 at 16:40 #46723Yeah. That’s what I thought. What about B Unit? (as you will gather, this is leading somewhere but want to be as sure of my ground as poss).
10 November 2015 at 16:15 #46720Ah, right – look s like it started shooting first week of Sept. So principal photography should be well done by now?
10 November 2015 at 16:02 #46718Question for those who know these things: would you expect shooting for the Xmas special to have wrapped by now?
8 November 2015 at 12:50 #46589@mersey @purofilion
Difficult to pin down, but:
“Once Clara’s in your head she never leaves”.
ISTRM that we’ve been hit with that cluestick a couple of times.
7 November 2015 at 23:11 #46553This also concludes many things like which Osgood was slain by Missy which was the zygon form as from my knowledge, zygons can’t copy zygons
Between the denouement and the epilogue there was planet of time for the Osgoods to perform a switcheroo and Osgood was very clear in being determinedly unclear which was which. Gotcha.
We will no when it no longer matters…
Edit: Sorry. That’s got a bit scattergun hasn’t it. I’ll shut up now.
7 November 2015 at 23:08 #46552Oh yeah and:
Five rounds. Rapid.
7 November 2015 at 23:06 #465517 November 2015 at 23:04 #46550I have just had to explain to someone on Twitter the significance of the Hughie Green accent.
For the benefit the OZCanMericans he was our “Take the money or open the box” dude.
7 November 2015 at 22:58 #46549David Cameron a Labour politician
I guess you have missed the huge component of modern British political discourse that sees no meaningful difference between the Conservatives and (pre-Corbyn, at least) Labour…
I am supposed to.
Are the communists?
Are the fascists?
Are all those with scripture/ manifesto/ little red book?
The point that Osgood(s) made rather well was that when things become indistinguishable they might as well be considered the same.
So am I to expect that you’re going to privilege your definition of ‘human decency’, as well?
The definitions are not mine, and I am not the one trying to privilege them.
And if you need to ask what human decency is (which you don’t) then we have a lot further to go than I thought.
7 November 2015 at 21:01 #46535I am beginning to think that Clara’s fate is to be forgotten by the Doctor. Call it the Inverse Donna.
7 November 2015 at 20:58 #46534Oh, that’s pure special pleading, up there with Humpty Dumpty. At the most generous it is naive etymology (A curiosity about attempts to codify the English language: when both Johnson and Fowler did their great works they were aiming to be prescriptive, and missed).
When a Muslim places there idea of faith above all else, and the expense of human decency that is fundamentalism; when a Christian places there idea of faith above all else, and the expense of human decency, that is fundamentalism, when a Communist places their ideology, above all else, and the expense of human decency, that is fundamentalism and an ultra-nationalist etc etc. It is just another brand of extremism.
Anyway, we have out answer to this should go to the new thread, I guess.
